Gay Lussac’s Law and Combined Gas Law Worksheet

Instructions: Calculate the given problems and show your solutions completely.

1. Gay Lussac’s Law :

Maybelline Cousteau’s backup oxygen tank reads 900 mmHg while on her boat,
where the temperature is 270C. When she dives down to the bottom of an unexplored
methane lake on a recently-discovered moon of Neptune, the temperature will drop
down to –1830 C. What will the pressure in her backup tank be at that temperature?
Answer:
270.32 mmHg
Explanation:
The initial pressure of the backup oxygen tank is 900 mmHg and its initial temperature
is 27 C.
Let P1 = initial pressure and T1 = initial temperature
So P1 = 900 mmHg and T1 = 27 C
It is also given that the final temperature of the tank is -183 C. Again let us assign
variable for this data.
Let T2 = -183 C
We can observe that the temperature of the tank lowered or became colder than the
initial, hence we have a negative value. In order for us to have a positive and correct
answer, we can convert this temperature to Kelvin.
273.15 + (-183 C) = 90.15 K
And for consistency of units, we must also convert the initial temperature into Kelvin. 27
C + 273.15 = 300.15 K

Using Gay-Lussac's Law, which has the equation   =  , we can

solve for P2 (which is the final pressure) that we are looking for.

Arranging the working equation we have P2 =

and substituting the given data, P2 =

P2 = 270.32 mmHg
2. Combined Gas Law:
The pressure of a gas is reduced from 1200.0 mmHg to 850.0 mmHg as the
volume of its container is increased by moving a piston from 85.0 mL to 350.0 mL. What
would the final temperature be if the original temperature was 90.0 °C?
