EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS OF
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE
SOCIETY OF KNOWLEDGE.
All of which is important if we consider the great access and proximity that
students have to the world of computer science, and the tremendous need
for teachers to have adequate training in this regard, an area strongly
requested by our current society.
21
In a world with all these changes, identity has become the main source of
meaning in a historical period characterized by a widespread destructuring of
organizations, delegitimization of institutions, disappearance of the main social
movements, and brief cultural expressions; today our societies are increasingly
structured around an opposition between the web and the self, so that social
fragmentation becomes more and more widespread as identities become more
specific and more difficult to share with the rest of the world; communication
breaks down in every sense and social groups end up seeing each other as
threats.
This is where Chilean education incorporates the computer science factor, so that
from this point of view (implementing the use of computer science in the education
of students), it becomes part of everyday life in the social future of the individual
in formation, but at the same time it is a struggle to avoid transforming it into a
"battle" between the users themselves.
Nowadays, the use of technology and especially the Internet is nothing new for
students, but it is a novelty to present some academic activity using technological
resources, although it all depends on the type of planning that the teacher uses.
The impact of technology on the way of thinking is high, as it has redefined the
intellectual tasks of all users, especially children and young people. While these
tasks used to be exclusive to the educational system, outside of it, the impact in
the spaces of play and social communication has generated a new style of
thinking that is based on providing quick answers, dealing with "trial and error" as
a main cognitive strategy, acting individually to solve problems, as if going
through an obstacle course.
That is why we will understand that "connectivity in today's society has not only
altered the meaning and production of knowledge, but also the spaces and times
of learning, breaking the social organization of the twentieth century" (Gros, 2015,
p.60).
For a long time, learning was considered as the product of a process in which
intelligence was mainly involved. We must consider that learning is a process that
involves both an exchange with others (students) and a dynamic disposition linked
to creativity and intelligence not only as a quality of the mind, but also as a
product of mental structures and intellectual tools provided in each social culture
(socialization process).
22
The role of the teacher turns out to be critical in the creation of situations that
allow students to build their own knowledge based on didactic approaches
that are meaningful to the student. Therefore, in order to carry out an
educational program (planning), which empowers meaningful learning, the
teacher must be able to be a mediator, guide, facilitator of knowledge and
research, and coordinator; and they must foster the search for information in
the students. Regarding cognitive intelligence and the use of technologies,
learners can start working in class, then perform data collection at home or
outdoors, elaborate new knowledge with the help of software, and perform
knowledge sharing in the classroom or in a virtual environment (Gros, 2015:
p.61)
From the above, it is possible to expand human intelligence from the use of
intelligent technologies. It should be noted that when we talk about intelligent
technologies we refer to the use of a computer combined with our human
intelligence, where the teacher can, through his/her technological and
pedagogical skills, develop certain skills in students to achieve new knowledge.
In Chile, the use of media in the classroom has been oriented in favor of a
modernization and sophistication more technical than pedagogical, rather than
favoring the recovery of work with all the parameters that regulate this use.
That is why we must create a more reflective School or educational institution,
which benefits the development of skills and cognitive competencies, to
generate new and better ways of knowing and thinking.
23
This "knowledge society", is created by people who collaborate and build
together new knowledge, performing cognition processes, united under a
particular theme. For this, it is necessary to know how to manage correctly in
this environment, where information is often shaped by the collaboration
that can be of a few or many, but what is necessary is to know how to
coordinate and clearly distribute their roles, according to competences.
The document also mentions the skills or competencies that teachers develop
with good leadership and the potential of collaborative work. Each member
of the group will have skills and/or abilities to carry out specific functions
that have been designated as a team. Some will have greater skills to
research or select the sources of information needed, process data, and the
necessary skills so that together as a team they can achieve the goals set.
With respect to ICT resources, the means for collaboration with others vary
depending on when and what they are to be used for. Among the best
known are the wikis, which are clearly based on shared work, which
generates new knowledge as well as a complete follow-up for the teacher.
For all this, the teacher must play a fundamental role in the learning process
with telematic resources, as mentioned by Hernandez and Ventura (1992),
incorporating the "Learning to learn". The role of the teacher is to be a
facilitator of learning, a mediator, with sufficient leadership to achieve the
expected learning in their students through a climate of trust and emotional
motivation for the student to take the active role of builder of their own
knowledge.
24
Here we are introduced to the constructivist paradigm of Piaget and
Vigotski, with the sociocultural approach, which holds that all learning is
social and mediated. Although learning has an individual dimension of
analysis, it can develop at its best when it occurs in collaboration with
others.
Regarding the planning that teachers should do, they should consider that
the execution of the tasks proposed to students, which require the use of
ICT in order to favor collaborative work, should consider group interaction
as a necessary and significant condition for learning. All this should be
considered in direct relation to classroom work or the development of a
project, based on the type of emergent pedagogy used by the teacher.
But if we approach this topic from the pedagogical point of view, we find
another reality: The resistance of teachers to learn and integrate into their
pedagogical practices the use of ICT and all the tools that can be found on
the Internet, improving the teaching-learning process, either due to lack of
knowledge, fear of being observed, fear of making mistakes, or the
transfer of their own negative typifications (feeling diminished in society),
are possibly one of the biggest problems faced by Chilean teachers when
they face a PC and a class. How many times do you hear teachers say that
they are "surpassed" by their own students? How many say that it is a
waste of time to incorporate ICT in the classroom? As Castells (1999) points
out, this new technological revolution centered around ICTs, modifies the
social base at an accelerated pace, the interdependencies of economies
changes the decentralization and interconnection of companies, and an
endless number of revolutions that are increasingly incorporated and are
part of today's societies.
25
Knowledge is a priority component in an educational institution, which must be
worked on constantly, as an organization through research; as an Academic Unit
(Faculties) through innovative projects and classroom work, among other forms
of development. Likewise, in order to generate knowledge, one must perform the
act of thinking; it is considered an act of imagining, discoursing, reflecting,
meditating on the things that are studied and examined with attention.
It is not currently disputed that we are in the knowledge society, where we can
find some differences at the moment of analyzing and evaluating its peculiar
characteristics. The complexity implied by such a deep and dynamic concept as
the "knowledge society" conflicts with an educational system that is anchored in
other more traditional and even "archaic" parameters, far from our times.
But knowledge, knowing and thinking are also undergoing changes today, as
they are experiencing transformations in their concepts and ways of working,
according to the type of pedagogy that is developed in teaching or from the
classroom climate that it generates, considering the value and the global vision
to achieve the ultimate goal: the success in student learning.

CAMBIO METODOLÓGICO EN LA
GESTIÓN DE AULA PARA EL
APRENDIZAJE MEDIADO CON TIC
Por: Ángela Guzmán-Michellod; Danitza Garrido;
Macarena Henríquez; Belén Navarro y Mynako Takahashi
convergente, divergente, asimilador y acomodador” (p.87).
33
3.2 Objetivos
a) Objetivo General :

METHODOLOGICAL CHANGE IN
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT FOR ICT-
MEDIATED LEARNING
By: Ángela Guzmán-Michellod; Danitza Garrido; Macarena
Henríquez; Belén Navarro y Mynako Takahashi
1. Introduction
57
During the 20 classes conducted, each researcher was observed by another
peer researcher, using the post-observation feedback process.
At the end of this research, different strategies used at the time of conducting
the classes will be found, also employing varied resources, within classrooms that
are traditional, small, narrow and difficult to move furniture.
It was observed that in the classrooms there were different types of classroom
organization, referring to the furniture, tables, chairs, shelves, racks, etc., and
how the teaching role contributed to the behavior and learning of the students;
therefore, it was possible to find the complement between methodology and
classroom structure that should exist between the previously mentioned
concepts, that is, how the classroom organization and the teaching role
contribute to the role of the students and their learning processes.
From this expected relationship between the concepts, questions arose: How will
the teaching role and the organization of the space directly influence the learning
and disciplinary behavior or coexistence of the student?, How do teachers have
the improvement to implement the changes in the spaces within the classroom?,
Will teachers know the importance of the organization of the classroom with the
learning processes of the students?, Will teachers have higher levels of
knowledge and capacity of the importance of the organization of the classroom?
Will the constant restructuring of the classroom space help the students?, Will the
various investigations carried out abroad be applicable in our country?, Will the
teachers not know the importance of the classroom organization for the students'
learning processes?, Will the teacher know the emotions of his/her students?, Will
the teacher understand that the incorporation of psychology in his/her daily
work is an important and influential topic in the students' learning?
As a team of researchers we are aware that society has been evolving over time,
as well as education and its reforms that are constantly changing, but are all
educational aspects constantly changing and adapted to new times?
58
We ask this question because the way the classroom is organized has not
changed and has not been modified since past times, we commonly see students
sitting individually or in pairs, facing the front (the blackboard), the same place
where the teacher is centered.
Given all the questions we raised during the observation and analysis process, an
even bigger question arises: How does the distribution of classroom space and
our teaching practice influence our students' learning?
59
After this, we have concluded that the four classrooms observed have a
reduced space, but that it is possible to generate changes in the structure,
achieving an environment conducive to learning and pedagogical innovation
where it is possible to mediate with ICT.
c) Specific objectives:
To characterize the structure of the classroom space to see the influence
on the learning process and interpersonal relationships of the students.
To design classroom structure with different methodologies mediated with
ICT.
To implement different teaching methodologies to favor ICT-mediated
learning opportunities for students.
To analyze the effect caused by the classroom space organization and
methodology implemented by teachers in order to generate learning
opportunities.
To propose a classroom structure organization that enables learning
opportunities and interpersonal relationships for students.
d) Reference framework
i. Classroom management: emphasis on classroom structure
60
In turn, we will define classroom for the contextualization of the concept of
classroom management, as defined by the RAE (2005) "classroom. In an
educational center, room where classes are held."
But to do this, two unfounded assumptions that pervade the educational world
must be overcome:
Thinking that the students are always willing to follow the class that the
teacher wishes to teach, whatever it may be.
Believing that the teachers who impart it are prepared by spontaneous
generation to effectively manage their classroom when, to a large extent, we
have not been trained to do so" (Castañeda, M. and Villalta, M., 2017).
According to Penalva A., Hernández, M.A., & Guerrero, E, (2003) it is that which
"promotes that each of the students reaches, in a lasting way, the highest
possible level in all aspects of their performance and integral development,
beyond what would be foreseeable taking into account their initial performance
and their social, cultural and economic situation". (p.78).
61
In turn, Ruay (2010) points out that:
When defining the new role of the teacher and professional learning, it is
important to consider the matrix under which the teacher has received his or
her basic training, his or her initial training. This is a task to be solved by the
training institutions of this professional whose mission is to educate the
generations of children and young people of a society in permanent change,
where he/she is no longer the repository of knowledge. (p.122)
62
Learning styles are cognitive ways of generating and acquiring learning with
various theories that define them, but in this study the VAK theory will be used,
since it is the test applied to students in which is defined a learning style that can be
visual, auditory and/or kinesthetic, which have individual characteristics that
differentiate them, which will allow to find the most appropriate methodologies
according to the results.
As mentioned above, within the learning style we find three styles, the definition of
each one as mentioned by the government of Paraguay (2005):
"We use the visual representation system whenever we remember abstract
(such as letters and numbers) and concrete images. The auditory
representation system is the one that allows us to hear in our mind voices,
sounds, music. When we remember a melody or a conversation, or when we
recognize the voice of the person speaking to us on the telephone, we are
using the auditory representation system. Finally, when we remember the taste
of our favorite food, or what we feel when we listen to a song we are using the
kinesthetic representation system." (p.4)
v. Constructivism
We will define constructivism from a classical view of concept with definitions
according to Piaget and Vygotsky. According to Arancibia, Herrera, Strasser
(2008)
Piaget's theory of cognitive development or stages model of intellectual
development is probably the most influential source in the study of children's
cognitive development. This model was first published in 1947 in his book The
Psychology of Intelligence, where he proposes the existence of four
qualitatively distinct stages of cognitive development. The four stages
correspond to a sensory-motor stage (0 to 2 years), preoperational stage (2 to
7 years), concrete operational stage (7 to 12 years) and a stage called formal
operations (12 years onwards) (p.87).
According to Piaget, constructivism is based on the fact that the child, through
experience, can acquire learning opportunities that allow him/her to acquire
his/her own qualities and characteristics. Arancibia, Herrera, Strasser (2008)
Lev S. Vygotsky (1895-1934), a Soviet psychologist, who worked around the middle
of this century, proposed a completely different approach to the relationship
between learning and development, criticizing the commonly accepted position that
learning should match the child's developmental level in order to be effective. (p.91)
63
e) Methodological Framework
In the field of research there are multiple ways of reading reality, such as the
traditional or positivist paradigm, post-positivism, critical theory and constructivism,
according to the texts "Paradigms of scientific research" and " Conflicting
paradigms in qualitative research".
Paradigm is defined according to Guba & Lincoln (1994) "Basic system of beliefs or
way of seeing the world that guides the researcher, not only in choices of method
but in fundamental epistemological and ontological paths." (p.105)
The approach present in action research is the constructivist paradigm, which
arises from the search for the contrast between the disciplines of exact science
and the social aspect.
It is the above quote what makes us as researchers deduce that when we are
investigating the learning of students related to the organization of the classroom
space, we are investigating clearly in the social, in a context with diverse
knowledge taking into account that there is not a single reality.
TABLE 1. Basic (Metaphysical) Beliefs of Alternative Research Paradigms. Table taken from
Guba & Lincoln (1994)
64
As mentioned by Creswell (2014) cited by Ramos (2015) "The grounded theory
design is the main tool that allows the researcher to build a substantive theory
that allows interpreting the subjectivity, ideology, perception, constructor,
discourses, etc. that the individuals in the study construct" (p.15).
Given the above, the fact of applying diverse instruments used for the study will
help us to understand the context in which we are situated and to be able to
intervene by understanding in its totality the diverse ideologies and perceptions
of our focal group.
According to the above mentioned and the definition given of the constructivist
paradigm, and finding the relationship of this paradigm with the learning stages
defined by Piaget, we can say that we must take into account, as the definition
of the constructivist paradigm states, the contextualization of a context in its
usual context, which is why it is of utmost importance to know the stage in which
the students are in order to understand their context.
f) Type of research
Given the characteristics of the research we rely on the qualitative approach as
stated by Cuenya & Ruetti (2010) cited by Ramos (2015), which defines the
qualitative approach as the one that "seeks to understand the phenomena within
their usual context, it is based on detailed descriptions of situations, events,
people, interactions, observed behaviors, documents, and other sources that
pursue the purpose of pretending not to generalize the results" (p.16).
Among the main concepts of the qualitative approach we find present the action
research (what was done in this study), we also find constructivism within the
qualitative approach, since it mentions according to Cuenya & Ruetti (2010) cited
by Ramos (2015), that "subjective meanings and the understanding of the context
where a phenomenon occurs should be considered, beyond the measurements
that could be made on them" (p.15).
This paradigm seeks to analyze social contexts considering the diverse realities in
a subjective way, as defined by one of the considerations according to Cueya &
Ruetti (2010).
65
g) Description of techniques and instruments
Four instruments will be used to conduct this research: VAK test, field diary, semi-
structured interviews, and classroom observation with feedback for the process
of improving teaching practice.
The second concept to be defined for understanding is learning styles, which Diaz
(2012) will define as.
Based on the experiential model of learning, David Kolb and Roger Fry
created in 1995 the LEARNING STYLES, under the conception that, according
to the characteristics of each student, some combination of the stages of the
cycle favors their learning more than others. (p.6)
66
These concepts have been defined because we will perform a VAK test
consisting of:
*First instrument: This test based on the VAK model will be applied to each
student of the classes mentioned during the research. The VAK model allows us
to have a better control and fluency in the classes; at the same time it allows us to
develop new strategies to learn through the visual (V), auditory (A) channels, in
addition to using touch or movement as a learning method (K). The objective is to
know which is the learning style or channel that predominates in the person, in
this case in the focus group to be studied.
The selection of this instrument is due to the fact that we will be recording what is
happening in our implementation; therefore, the best tool for this is the field diary,
since it allows us to have a more complete record of what is happening for later
analysis, having several points of view to complement, such as: date, time, class,
description, argumentation and interpretation.
67
Each researcher will conduct one field diary per week. The weeks that will be
considered will be only those in which planning focused on classroom management
and ICT use is implemented. After that, a total of 9 field diaries will be obtained;
with the latter, a general field diary will be generated.
According to Stronge (1997) quoted by Milicic N., Rosas R., Scharager J., García
M., and Godoy C. (2008)
Classroom observation is an empirical research method frequently used in the
evaluation of teaching performance. It analyzes the characteristics of the
performance of the teacher and his or her students in the real context in which
the educational process takes place, avoiding making inferences about
68
what really happens in the classroom. The evaluation can be carried out
directly (on-site observation) or indirectly, through the observation of films of
the teaching practice. The following will be considered: use of space,
teacher's role, student's role, understanding that in the last of the points to
be considered, the observation will focus on the student's attitude, the way
of learning, and the way in which we realize that he/she is learning. (p. 79-
80).
After class observation, there is feedback, which is based on Wilson's pyramid.
69

Diagram of the triangulation carried out (own elaboration).
70
i) Results
The results were obtained from the VAK test applied to the four classes studied,
the field diaries conducted by the researchers, the semi-structured interview
applied to the head teachers of each class and the observations of classes
among peers.
For the realization of this test, the parents were asked for their authorization by
means of an informed consent, in this way we will be able to use the results in this
study.
The results were: of the total of the four classes selected for the application of
the test and with a total of 128 students enrolled, 88 students are authorized by
their parents to apply the test, corresponding to 68.75%. Of the total number of
authorized students, 82 were given the VAK test, corresponding to 93.18%.
71
Due to the administrative contingency of the school under study, many of the
students counted at the beginning are not included in the application of the test,
and the number of students is also reduced when the number of students is not
counted because their parents did not give their consent or authorization for the
application of the test.
Now, we can explain the selection of a learning style based on Jean Piaget's
theory of cognitive development, since, as mentioned by Arancibia, Herrera,
Strasser (2008) "the four stages correspond to a sensory-motor stage (0 to 2
years), preoperational stage (2 to 7 years), concrete operational stage (7 to 12
years), and a stage called formal operations (12 years onwards)" (p.87).
These four stages mentioned above exist within Jean Piaget's cognitive
development, since they are defined by skills generated and acquired by children
at ages defined by the expert, which become more complex as the child grows.
In this way we can see that children in 1st grade are in a preoperational stage,
which Arancibia, Herrera, Strasser (2008) explain "the beginning of this stage is
marked by the presence of symbolic function (representation). This capacity can
be appreciated through symbolic play, deferred imitation and language, which
make their appearance at this stage." (p.88)
This is why in 1st grade they are, for the most part, in a kinesthetic learning style,
since, as explained by the theory of cognitive development, at this age students
are at a stage in which their way of learning is through the representation of
objects, which is marked by actions, symbols and representations.
On the other hand, for students in 2nd and 3rd grade, who are in a specific
stage, their learning style begins to change and most of them are in a mostly
visual learning style.
72
This is why students in these classes are mostly in a visual style, since, as
mentioned above, students at this stage have a more logical and concrete way of
generating learning compared to students in earlier classes, so they no longer
need to constantly touch or perform actions to acquire what they are learning.
It should be clarified that being in the process of changing stages of cognitive
development, i.e., moving from a pre-operational stage to a concrete stage,
although most students identify themselves with a learning style more compatible
with their stage of cognitive development, not all of them will still have the
change from concrete to abstract, therefore not all students will have a visual or
auditory learning style, but rather they may still be in a kinesthetic learning style.
In the field diaries we can observe the perspectives of the researchers on the
classroom implementations carried out. These implementations were focused on
classroom management and teaching methodologies to favor student learning.
These approaches were applied in the classroom space of each class, in addition
to the methodologies that were adjusted to the students' learning styles, applying
the VAK test.
In the distribution of the classroom space that was implemented in the classes,
several forms of organization were used, where the ones used by the
researchers were the "U", where in some cases, due to the space of the room,
two "U" structures were used. The other room structure was that of groups,
where groups of 5 to 6 students were organized to carry out the activities. We
also worked in pairs and trios; in the collaborative work, pairs and trios were
formed by the researchers with the help of the teachers in charge of the class.
What was observed is that these classroom structures worked in some classes,
therefore, we can say that the classroom structure does not necessarily succeed
in all classes homogeneously. Rather, the functionality of each structure will
depend on the physical and attitudinal disposition of the class.
73
The perception of the researchers with respect to discipline in the classes was
that there were times when it could not be carried out normally. There were times
when the researchers were not satisfied or comfortable, since the planned class
could not be developed as scheduled or the behavior of the students was not as
desired or did not create an environment conducive to learning.
In general, we can point out that the researchers are satisfied with the 20
interventions carried out, since the objectives established in this study were met,
favoring the students' learning. These were verified in the following classes
during the process of activation of previous knowledge, where not only the
activities were remembered, but rather the contents covered, and also in the
evaluations given to the students, they obtained better results.
On the other hand, the dissatisfaction of having been able to deliver more than
what was done, but through the daily writing in the field diary, it was also evident
the comfort and security that each researcher felt during the classes.
Secondly, when asked how they would generate a classroom space, they point
out that it would be a more interactive space for students. Two teachers
indicated that they would generate a space where they could place a reading
"sector" (classroom library) and the other teachers do not have more knowledge
on the subject, therefore, they did not give an answer to what was asked.
74
Regarding the management models used, the answers are varied, since they
indicated that they work cooperatively, traditionally and in groups. One teacher
in her answer did not refer to the methodology used, but indicated that she
would manage group work or work in teams, according to the interests of the
students, but this discourse is not reflected in the day-to-day work.
As mentioned by Grainger et al. (2016), Thomas et al. (2014) and Wingrove et al.
(2015) quoted in Contreras (2018)
75
In this research, class observations were carried out with post-class feedback.
These observations were carried out by the researchers themselves, who
organized times to fit in the monitoring of all the classes they conducted for this
research.
The complete didactic cycle was observed (beginning, development and closing),
where they should be intentional about activities involving strategies for the
different learning styles of the students (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) and
changes in classroom management through its structure and role in the student
body. A total of 20 classes were observed by another researcher (peer
observation). After the observation, a feedback was given by the observer to
the researcher who conducted the class, with this information the following
results are given in general:
76
For the feedback process after class
observation, three areas were generated:
strengths, weaknesses and areas for
improvement to help advance professional
development in teaching.
On the other hand, through this research and classroom observations among
peers, we can objectively observe the strengths that each researcher has and
the aspects to improve were important at the time of giving feedback, since it
was a challenge to be carried out in the next classes.
77
In the emotional area, the observing researchers evidenced in the observed
teachers security and comfort at the moment of conducting the classes, in spite
of the adversities that some of them experienced.
The structure of the classroom space that was found when observing the initial
classes in the educational establishment where the research was carried out was
the traditional classroom structure.
The students were in rows with frontal gaze (looking at the blackboard one after
the other), the teacher's table was also located in a corner in front of the children
looking at them, that is, learning is not focused on the student, but rather on the
teacher who has the leading role, since the students look at the back of their
classmates' heads and not at their faces.
The rooms were set under the concept of a literate room, allowing students to
learn through what is observed.
In some classrooms, as in the case of the first grade, there were large rooms
where students were located and the other section of the room was a free space,
where lockers and shelves for storing materials were located. On the other hand,
the second and third grade classrooms were smaller than those of the previous
classes, and even in the third grade the students were all distributed around the
room, occupying most of the space, making it difficult for the teachers to move
around and constantly monitor the students' activities.
78
Of these organizations within the interventions, we analyzed which obtained
positive and negative results according to the context of each class, depending
on the subject and methodology implemented.
These results were evaluated according to the research instruments such as the
observations of classes among peers with subsequent feedback and the field
diary, where it was possible to analyze if the organization allowed us to fulfill this
objective from the personal perspective and another perspective of a peer.
Therefore, we can see that the research objective was met, since we structured
the space in favor of learning and interpersonal relationships of students, as well
as the use of mobile apps to strengthen learning processes in evaluation
processes (Plickers).
Therefore, we can point out that the characterization of the classroom structure
in the four classes had a positive influence on learning:
Linear pair structure: The students worked during the class in pairs with the
partner with whom they were sitting. In this structure it was possible to
visualize that by working in pairs there was learning among peers, respectful
and helping those who did not understand or had some difficulty in the
activity. The structuring of this activity was not very complicated, because
there was ample space in the classroom.
79
Group structure (5-6 students): Since the room had a reduced space, it was
structured in groups of 5-6 students where there were 4 tables in the center
and 1 or 2 at the ends. This structure was made according to the space
available, to allow the monitoring of the teacher, who previously could not
due to the reduced space.
“U” structure: As mentioned above, the classroom space was limited and it
was not possible to create a "U", therefore, the classroom was structured in
two "U" sections, where one was inside the other, so that the students could
visualize the classes in the same way. In addition, it allowed the teacher to
monitor all the students in an orderly manner, favoring learning and
interpersonal relationships. This was achieved because the students shared
with their classmates, they could observe the blackboard without having to
ask their classmates to move, they could look at each other's faces and not at
each other's backs, among other everyday things in a class.
This "art of teaching" is not a static process, but an excessively dynamic one,
which requires the constant development of new strategies that adapt to the
changes derived from or required by the context (cultural, social, economic,
political, etc.) (p.2).
From the quote it can be inferred that for the restructuring of classroom spaces
we had to gather information that helped us in the application of various
strategies seeking and testing the most appropriate according to the context of
the class, for this we rely on the VAK test (a test to identify learning styles) to
understand the existing context, that is, to modify and structure appropriate
strategies and based on the predominant learning style in the class.
80
In this way, different methodologies, activities, classroom structures focused on
the results of the VAK tests were tested and in turn this was reflected in our
planning, since according to the predominant learning style in the class, the
planning was carried out considering the presentation of the content, the
activities to be performed and the resources to be implemented such as
interactive Power Point or the use of Plickers for formative assessment.
The teachers found it necessary to try different methodologies combined with the
different structures of classroom spaces. Among the new methodologies
implemented by the researcher teachers are collaborative learning methodology,
challenge-based learning, experiential learning, mobile learning and peer-to-peer
learning.
In conclusion, the study and planning of the design of classroom structures using
different methodologies, allowed us to find the articulation of both for the
successful achievement of learning as:
81
Table 6. Structure and methodologies used
The methodologies used for the fulfillment of this objective were obtained
from the Innovation Observatory of the TEC de Monterrey, where according
to Fuerte (2017) collaborative learning is:
This method was carried out in the classroom where students were
challenged to create a survey with a current problem so that they could
survey their peers or also, the activity of completing a puzzle to solve
multiplication exercises was carried out, where they had to fulfill the activity
completely (example done in mathematics).
82
According to Fuerte (2017) experiential learning is a "Learning model that involves
living an experience in which the student can feel or do things that strengthen
their learning." (para. 16)
The experiential learning method was used during the Natural Sciences class of
the first grade, where the teachers conducted an experiment and the students
experienced in situ with their hands this activity, observing in the moment the
reactions occurred in the experimentation.
the use of mobile technologies such as laptops, tablets, MP3 players and
smartphones to support the teaching and learning process. Educational
resources can be accessed from the device that the student carries at all
times. (para. 34)
The mobile learning system was repeatedly used in classrooms using mobile apps
such as Mentimeter and Plickers.
5. Conclusions
Analyzing the effect caused by the organization in the classroom structure and
methodology implemented by teachers in order to generate learning
opportunities.
When analyzing the field diary and the semi-structured interviews applied, it is
possible to observe the effect caused by the classroom structure organization
and methodology implemented by the teachers.
83
could implement in their classes, it was not evident that the teachers used
technological resources to innovate in the classroom, rather a traditional class was
observed, a lot of individual work, students looking at the back of their classmates'
heads and looking towards the front of the room where the teacher was
conducting her class.
The monitoring by the teacher was weak, almost null due to the lack of space and
the poor distribution of the furniture.
What was achieved with the implementation of the changes in the classroom
structure, the new ICT resources and the selected methodologies, was very
positive for learning, achieving an optimal classroom climate, interaction among
peers, improvement in the relationship with the teacher, respect and tolerance
among students, among others.
In the interviews conducted with the teachers about their perception of the
changes generated in the classes by the researchers, they indicated that there
was an adequate classroom climate, i.e., the students maintained their attention in
class, their concentration was constant and longer lasting, it was observed active
participation, respect, tolerance among the opinions of others, and there was no
physical violence of any kind.
But the researchers in their field diaries indicated that they perceived at different
times that the classroom climate was not adequate, since some classroom
structures together with the methodology implemented could not be carried out in
its entirety, because some students were engaged in actions outside the class,
they talked among themselves about topics not in accordance with the content
and few students participated. There were also circumstances in which third
parties such as inspectors or teachers from other classes interrupted the
researcher's classes.
In conclusion, with the help of both instruments (field diary and semi-structured
interview) it was possible to better analyze the effect on students when the
teacher is able to manage the classroom with different structures and
methodologies according to what is planned or the objective to be developed in
the class, for example: if the main objective is school coexistence because some
students are having family problems, then the teacher selects classroom space
structures and classroom methodologies to be addressed in collaborative work.
84
All of the above generates a positive effect, this effect can be evidenced in a
concrete way since it could be observed in the students that it favored their
learning, in their interpersonal relationships, because when they worked in
groups, pairs or trios, they helped each other to carry out the activities, increased
their attention to the teachers when they carried out their classes, there was
respect among peers and towards the teacher, they tolerated the opinions of
their classmates and worked collaboratively.

Sería difícil no
1. METODOLOGÍA Y MUESTRA
89
2. RESULTADOS
(i) ESTUDIANTES
No

DIGITAL GAP: DEBUNKING MYTHS
(Study conducted prior to the Covid-19 pandemic)
Since the 1990s, the Chilean Ministry of Education has proposed projects
to address the need to incorporate technology in schools in order to start
working in the computing area and -from the moment such a program is
implemented- to reduce the digital gaps in children. In this way, from the
incorporation in the school system, students would acquire the necessary
digital skills, which would be developed progressively during high school
and up to the university system of higher education.
Fuente imagen: pixabay.com
This is the theory of the project at its inception, but 25 years later we
have realized that unfortunately we have not seen significant progress in
the digital literacy of students (or teachers). Without detracting from the
fact that there have indeed been changes and the subject of computing is
incorporated in schools, it would be difficult not to recognize the
discrepancy between the expected results and the current situation after
the passage of years, in which the country, for example, should no longer
be talking about digital gaps between teachers and students, but of a
digitized population, of teachers fully trained or perfected in the subject
and university students who have high skills in computing, at least in basic
tools such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
104
Current discussions seem to focus more on young people conceptualized as
digital natives by Mark Prenski (2001), who defines this concept as anyone
born from 1995 to the present, when they are born in a technological era,
but it is here where the current society has handled the concept wrongly, as
it is suggested that by being born in the digital age they already have the
knowledge by themselves, leaving aside the obvious, which is: to teach
them from an early age, working them transversely throughout their school
years.
During these years, in which various experts have coined concepts, I would
like to highlight the most relevant ones since 2001, in my opinion (in spanish):
Now, there are many digital immigrants that over time and according to the
insertion of technology they have been experiencing, have been
transformed into digital settlers, where they already handle a digital
language and the network without problems. At the same time, these
settlers become parents and their insertion is so much that they begin to
generate in their children digital orphans, digital natives who are parents,
who have not acquired control over the use of it. Which in some countries
have begun to generate government campaigns to prevent such
phenomena. Social changes are typical of these cultural changes, but it all
depends on learning the correct forms of use, time and self-regulation.
105
It should be noted that, although we are talking about digital natives (or
millennials or generation Z or other concepts coined in these times), most
of them are teenagers who were indeed born surrounded by technology,
but who do not necessarily have extensive digital knowledge, especially
and mainly in educational aspects, an area in which we can evidence the
first shortcomings of the overconfidence that commonly falls into when
measuring and prejudging the capabilities of this hyper-technologized
generation.
For the present study on the digital gap, the aforementioned survey was
applied to 133 students and 33 teachers from the same institution,
corresponding to the career of Pedagogy in Primary Education
(elementary education).
The Google Form platform was used for the application of the
questionnaire.
106
RESULTS
The results have been interesting, since the graphs show bars that contrast
in several occasions the figures of the teachers with those of the students,
generating questions such as: are the professors prepared to incorporate
ICT in university teaching? Why is the use of ICT low among academics if
they claim to have knowledge in the area? Why are students known as
digital natives, but they do not handle basic tools such as Office or
bibliographic search engines? What truths and myths exist between digital
natives -students- and digital immigrants -teachers-? Are the prejudices
regarding the age range of users justified? How prepared are professors to
form teachers and, in turn, students to develop in the working world?
Regarding the results obtained from the ACUTIC survey, it should be noted
that three areas were measured: the attitude that respondents show
towards technological resources in the classroom or in academic use in
general, previous knowledge about these tools and, finally, their current
level of use of these tools.
STUDENTS
Student results are presented below.
107
In the attitude section (graph 1), it seems clear that the students' attitude
towards technological resources in a university classroom in pedagogy is
very positive, with percentages that are over 80% regarding favorable
responses in which they indicate the desire for their teacher to incorporate
technology in the classroom, since they recognize the contribution of the
same in generating flexibility in communication among them, in facilitating
the understanding of certain concepts and topics, and in the conception of a
much more powerful work in the teaching-learning process.
108
In the area of questions about the use of technology by students, 14
questions were developed, of which five of them show a level of use that
exceeds 50% in the responses of the 133 students, while nine of the total
number of questions show a rate above 50% in terms of lack of use.
In general, Google searches and the use of simple programs such as Word,
Excel and Power Point are above 80%.
The second question whose figures exceed the 80% barrier refers to virtual
learning platforms, where -when breaking down the level of non-use- it is
possible to note that 48.8% do not use them at all, that is, practically half of
the 133 students surveyed have never used educational platforms when they
have them at the university as a complement to face-to-face classes. In this
area, it is striking to observe a total percentage of non-use as high as 81.8%,
since it represents more than 100 of the 133 students who have never had any
experience with virtual platforms (or their use is limited to only a couple of
opportunities), even though nowadays this is a very powerful resource for
graduate studies. The Chilean Ministry of Education uses virtual platforms for
multiple processes, not only as a learning environment, but also as a
management resource, program registration system, seminar attendance
manager, among others.
It is worth noting that the third question within this group indicates that half
of the people surveyed have never used statistical analysis programs, such as
SPSS or ATLAS.ti, and 37.5% of them have used them in very few instances,
which implies that 85.6% of the group demonstrates a severe lack of use.
Although we are talking about paid software, these are resources owned by
the university where the survey was conducted precisely for free use in data
analysis by students. These tools are also very powerful in the field of
research, thinking of a classroom teacher, for the knowledge that he/she can
acquire in his/her pedagogical practice, starting with the diagnosis that
he/she would be able to carry out in the classroom.
109
It is pertinent to ask what type of resources and activities are academics
requesting from their students if we consider that, in addition to the figures
of lack of use evidenced in the previous paragraphs, within the responses
with a higher frequency rate of use is Microsoft Word. It can be inferred
that the work being requested in teaching is purely written and rarely
involves the use of more varied resources, such as an explanatory video, a
multimedia tutorial or audio files related to the pedagogical task, to mention
a few.
110
Regarding the results of the academics surveyed, who make up a total of
31, it should be noted that in the area of their attitude towards the
incorporation of technological resources in university teaching, over 80%
of them -and sometimes 90%- highlighted their integration and qualified
technological resources as important, relevant and conducive to
facilitating student learning. Moreover, in question 1, which states "ICTs
foster involvement in the teaching and learning processes", 100% of the
academics indicated that they fully agreed with this statement. Likewise,
with regard to the statement "ICTs facilitate the development of classes",
93.5% of the teachers said they totally agreed with it, which begins to
show a trend if we add to this the 96.7% of the respondents -that is, 30
out of 31- who thought that teachers should use ICTs to improve the
quality of learning processes.
In the case of the questions that affirm that technologies make spaces
more flexible, allow the acquisition of competencies and improve classes
with their incorporation, 83.8% of the academics expressed their
agreement. Considering these results, it can be easily deduced that there
is a very positive attitude towards technologies in education on the part
of the professors, who recognize themselves as flexible and well disposed
on this subject, since they realize their contribution in facilitating the
processes.
111
In order to determine the level of use of technological resources by
teachers, a survey of 14 questions was conducted. The results showed that
in eight of them, the level of use exceeds 50%. However, in six of these
questions, it is also possible to observe a contrasting over 50% in terms of
lack of use.
Among the most favorable results, it is worth noting that 100% of the
teachers surveyed frequently use online communication systems such as e-
mail. Similarly, they indicate that they use basic tools, such as the main
components of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and search
engines such as Google. Over 80% use virtual spaces for interaction, such
as Facebook or other social networks, and close to 70% indicated that they
use tools such as YouTube. Then, 64.5% said that they use communication
systems such as forums, chats and videoconferences, and 58% of the
teachers said that they use online libraries and digital databases for
bibliographic references and the theoretical area, which is clearly closely
related to the academic field and the research development of each
university teacher. Finally, about 45% of the respondents have used virtual
materials and resources extracted from the network, probably as support
for their classes.
On the other hand, in terms of lack of use, the teachers admitted not using
statistical analysis programs such as SPSS or ATLAS.ti. It is worth noting
that 30 of the 31 teachers surveyed have rarely or never used these
software programs, which could suggest a relationship between the low
number of research projects carried out by teachers in primary education
and the lack of use of these types of software. In other words, if
academics did more research or were more immersed in this field, they
could learn more about and use this type of software. On the other hand,
the above is not related to the use of databases, since teachers have
indicated that they do use and operate this bibliographic resource.
They also do not use audio and video editing programs and do not use
virtual learning platforms. The final figures show that a large number of
teachers - that is, 26 of the 31 - do not use educational software for their
classes.
112
If we recapitulate the 14 questions answered in the area of use, we can
note that teachers do frequently use common applications such as Microsoft
Office; basic tools such as Google and other search engines; library systems
and digital databases; digital means of communication such as
videoconferencing, e-mail services, instant messaging, among others; and
social networks, the most prominent being Facebook and Twitter. However,
it is also evident the great weakness that exists in the areas of statistical
software, online teaching resources and virtual platforms, resources that
can be very powerful both inside and outside the classroom to support work
with students, especially in teacher training.
CONCLUSION
Undoubtedly, the study yields conclusive and motivating results for teachers
who wish to start incorporating ICT or continue their use in teaching, since
one of the most outstanding findings points out that teachers use more
academic resources than students and that many of the latter do not even
know how to download basic applications on their cell phones, so we can
conclude that the fact that young people use social networks frequently
does not make them skilled users in academia - where teachers are ahead
of them - and this finding allows us to debunk the myth that this generation
is inherently superior when it comes to technology, thus opening the door to
the notion of the teacher as guide, mentor and mediator, who can
incorporate technological resources in any of his classes and in any field,
henceforth and forever, avoiding the prejudice that students, born in the
digital era, will always have a deeper global technological knowledge.
Myth 1
Among the results we have seen, there are significant similarities and
differences between students' and teachers' attitudes towards technology.
Considering that educators are the ones who train these young people as
future teachers, they should have sufficient technological skills to transmit
to their students the minimum digital knowledge that will allow them to
perform effectively in school teaching with ICT-based support.
113
In this context, if we make a contrast between the results related to the
attitude towards technological resources of both students and teachers,
we can see that -in general- there is a great similarity. Both present a
positive attitude towards the various technological tools, which can be
seen throughout the seven questions focused on this area.
114
Another relevant aspect in the conclusion of the area of attitude towards
technology is that only in one of the seven questions there are teachers
who expressed disagreement. On the other hand, in the case of students,
between one and four of them disagreed in each and every one of the
questions asked. As a result of this, the favorable percentages of both
groups become indivisible from the associated negative figures, so that -
considering the overall results rather than just the positive figures - it is
reasonable to insist that the attitude presented by university teachers is,
broadly speaking, more positive than that of their students.
Myth 2
115
In terms of lack of knowledge, there are several aspects with
considerable similarity between teachers and students. For example, in
the area of data analysis, where both groups show a notorious lack of
knowledge of the most popular resources related to this topic. For
students, these tools would be of great help for their thesis and perhaps
for the generation of diagnostics, which hypothetically could be
requested in some class. On the other hand, for academics, who mostly
have little knowledge of data analysis software, these tools could be very
useful in the field of research that they carry out as part of their
academic work. The latter raises the question of whether there is a direct
relationship between the notorious lack of knowledge of these programs
and the low amount of research or articles published by teachers.
Myth 3
116
Here the students differ to a lesser degree of use. Several of them answer
"sometimes" or "never" regardint the use, while teachers answer
"frequently", teachers use them more frequently than students. As for the
other questions, digital database or web 2.0, again the teachers are ahead,
they obtain better results than the students, they use the resource more,
there are more answers in "always" or "frequently", versus the students
that many of the students answer "sometimes" or "never".
With respect to the use of the database, it can be seen that although the
teachers have a good attitude, they do not use it very often, in accordance
with what was stated above. Clearly, teachers make a scaffolding of the
resource without greater knowledge, to use it within their possibilities,
trying to learn autonomously, but when they see that they do use it on
some occasions, it is necessary to take improvement classes to learn to use
it in a better way, obtaining an optimal use to start doing research, from
the application of the classroom for its use, APA Standards, citations in
bibliographic references, etc.
It is worth noting the low use of virtual learning platforms, teachers take
the lead, since students say "never" use, versus teachers who have more
even use of frequently and sometimes.
117
After analyzing the 14 questions regarding the frequency of use of digital
resources by students and their respective answers, it can be concluded that
they have a low level of use within the wide range of tools available to
nurture their training as teachers, so it is also possible to argue that they
have not acquired the basic skills that a pedagogue should have. This
deficiency also has consequences for classroom work, where students could
use a series of resources to enrich the learning process. Among the teachers
in charge of training these future teachers, there should be an effort aimed
at the effective creation of learning guides, the development of various
digital skills, the conception of an effective bibliographic search method and
support in the research area. It is precisely in these areas where students
exhibit the greatest deficiencies. For example, there is a significant deficiency
in the handling of bibliographic references, since most students are not
familiar with digital bibliographic databases and do not use applications for
statistical data analysis. If we contextualize the ability to use these tools in
the development of a thesis, student teachers could generate quantitative
analyses in research situations using SPSS and descriptive analyses using
ATLAS.ti for the acquisition of qualitative information.
Not for that reason, in the era in which television appeared, people were
going to know how to use a TV, if they did not have the proper teaching,
therefore, what we see is that we have a generation that has been
prejudiced and has generated a false reality, where we believe that they
know, that they manage and know more than us, limiting ourselves to use the
resource for fear of being ridiculed or demonstrate that we do not know, but
at the time of making them apply something. We have not questioned why
they do not know: it is because they are not taught.
118
If we have the basic and middle school system, we must remember that the
area of digital skills is a cross-cutting area, it is not limited to the computing
teacher, but all teachers of various subjects should perform actions in the
classroom, where it generates students to create and design with ICT and
not just watch or replicate what the teacher does. For this, teachers must
know how to use them, know the pedagogical intentionality. Do not prejudice
the student. If the teacher is not clear about the digital competencies that
the student should have, that student will arrive at the university system
without knowledge. The university teacher believes (due to a social issue we
have created this way, misunderstanding the concept of digital native), that
he knows and does not teach him, believing that this student is more fluent
and knows more, but it is not so. On the contrary, the teacher who starts
using ICT in the classroom encounters the difficulty that the student does not
know how to download an app on the cell phone, does not know how to
generate a simple and basic virtual platform, does not know how to search
for apps that help him in his training as a teacher, so we return to why they
do not know: the teacher should not take for granted that the student
knows.
We emphasize that the university teacher has a better attitude than the
students, therefore, he already has a great part of the ground gained, since
it will be easier to learn to use a resource in a pedagogical way, for a
common purpose, in this way, he will teach it to the students so that they can
use it with their school students. If the teacher sets his mind to it, he will
achieve digital competences in his students, who will be future teachers. In
that way, that teacher will train his students and start the virtuous cycle
from the school system to the university system. In this way, if we all
implement these innovations in the classroom, we will generate a digitalized
society in the global informational knowledge society.

130

desarrollen habilidades motrices y ejecuten
actividades de ejercicio físico que les permita
generar movimiento en sus hogares y
motivarlos a participar.

estar frente a tantas personas.
muchos programas e ideas completamente innovadoras"

nuevas habilidades".
