There are about 1 trillion species on earth. That is more than the
amount of stars in the Milky Way galaxy. But, every day we lose more
and more species due to many reasons like global warming and
excessive hunting and fishing. But how does this affect us? What are
the causes and effects of biodiversity loss?
First of all, what causes biodiversity loss? There are two types of
biodiversity loss, the first being natural loss which usually happens
during the weather changes. In the spring, biodiversity increases
because of breeding season and decreases in the winter because of the
harsh conditions. The second type is human-driven biodiversity loss
which can be divided into five subsections; habitat loss (when and
existing habitat is destroyed the species in it is usually wiped out as
well), invasive species (which happens when a non-indigenous species
is introduced to a habitat in which it has no natural predator and many
prey), overexploitation (when we overharvest, overfish, overhunt),
pollution (when piled up garbage and material doesn’t degrade at the
speed at which its being added, it can cause massive problems), climate
change (which affects global warming. When the temperature
increases, it’ll effect many species of plants and animals and kill them
out.). Now that we’ve seen the causes of biodiversity loss, what are the
effects?
The effects of the loss of biodiversity can be split into two parts.
The first, ecological effects, effects the long-term survival of a species
and its survival. It also becomes at risk of being endangered or wiped
out. The second, economic and societal, which affects us humans and
our society and economy. Humans usually use plants and animals for
foods and medicines and they use plants and trees for building material
and furniture. With the decrease of biodiversity and with species going
extinct, medicines and food will become scarcer and scarcer and we’ll
be able to build fewer homes because of the decrease of trees.
In conclusion, biodiversity loss is a matter that should be tackled
ASAP. Its man-made causes should be worked on so that we don’t
suffer its effects on us.
