Reflection Assignment:
In a cornfield close to Susie Salmon's home, a fourteen-year-old girl is raped
and killed. The deceased girl recounts this story while watching over her family,
friends, and killer from Heaven. The book presents a compelling story about a
little girl's dreams and anxieties as well as her family's difficult journey through
grieving. Its material is undoubtedly dark and serious .
The characters have been developed very deeply and realistically. I've never
been terrified of a character from a book before, but Sebold always gives me the
shivers whenever the killer is mentioned, even though there isn't much blood or
graphic violence described. It is very impressive for a book to have the same
impression with such subtle teasing of the killer's disturbed state. Movies have a
way of expressing this similar horror through the actor's visual representation of
the brutality and insane inclinations. That's not much of a surprise, but the killer
truly horrified me. But I would advise against reading the book in the middle of
the night.
The plot includes a number of paranormal occurrences, some of which I thought
might have been cut. I was reminded of "Sixth Sense" and "Ghost Whisperer" at
several places. Both of which explore the idea that those who pass away
suddenly from their existence on Earth may still be there to exact revenge or
leave messages for their loved ones. I avoid thinking about such events
because, as you can probably see, I'm pretty dubious (and afraid) of them. I'm
not going to break down these components because this is a fictional work.
