“Katas” Oil on Canvas by Antipas Delotavo

The image is an oil on canvas painting called Katas, by Antipas Delotavo that is just
a painting at first glance, but as one examines the painting closer, the story of
farmers in a rural area becomes noticeable. This oil on canvas composition
illustrates farmers who are working in a field. The artist draws one's eye to the
closest farmer by making the background dark and plain and making the foreground
brighter. Additionally, by painting the closest farmer in a darker tone it draws the
one’s eyes towards the farmer. In the image, I had also noticed how the artist
achieves a sense of asymmetrical balance by dividing the image into two sections,
the asymmetry in balance creates visual works of great aesthetic value. The top half
of the artwork is occupied by a rougher and darker coloured image, while the bottom
half of the image has a smoother and lighter colour than the other image which
contrasts with one another. In this image, all of the proportions appear smaller than
how they look in person; the farmers in the back are much larger in scale than the
farmer in the front at the bottom half of the image. The large areas of contrasting
textures, patterns and colours create a sense of balance and unity within the
composition. The image describes that there is a wide income disparity between the
rural and urban regions. Making many farmers experience chronic poverty that
forces them to migrate to urban areas.
