Module 1 Capstone Milestone

 TOPIC SELECTION

For my capstone project, I have decided to choose the topic of “Security issues, problems

and solutions in organizational IT systems.” My reasoning behind choosing this topic, is due to

my extremely close ties to securing various machines in a closed network on site, and in the

cloud using Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. The while the issues of day zero

attacks, and mitigating them via staggered patching is common knowledge, I do not believe that

actively scanning systems around the clock or properly securing cloud machines is. Problems can

include a bevy of issues for organizational IT systems, some as basic as lessened system or

network performance, while others can be more nefarious such as implementing remote

keyloggers to hold a system ransom.

This project will entail a detailed explanation of current security issues that most

organizations face, along with solutions to them in addition to a historical analysis and a

projection of how organizations can keep their information systems secure in the future. From

the perspective of a citizen in the United States of America, further explanations of current cyber

threats to the country will be analyzed in addition to analyzing the susceptibility of

cyber/ransomware attacks to the largest companies in the United States. Listed security issues

will be further explained by relating them physical security concepts and to technical cases such

as the SolarWinds Orion hack of 2020, the Office of Personnel Management data breach of

2015.
