is purple and hard skinned on the outside with white fleshy segments inside. Here is a secret you may not have known about the Mangosteen.

They are also known to have remarkable effect on cardio vascular health, to be naturally antibiotic, anti viral and anti inflammatory. They also exhibit anti-histamine properties. We will introduce you to this drink. The natural wood like carvings of the petals on the bottom of the fruits hard outer skin indicates how many segments are contained within. The blue petals on the tiles on the floors in the lobby that welcome you upon arrival at the resort replicate this floral design,

WHERE TO WATCH BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES AND DRAGONFLIES IN BALI Recently, we invited an expert in the field, Gehan De Silva Wijeyeraatne and his team to research the fauna and flora of Bali. Along with our team, they travelled around Bali documenting the varied facets of enchanting Bali. Follow in their footsteps with reference books and notes in hand and enjoy the birds, dragonflies and butterflies of Bali. Search too for the Putri Malu plant, translated simply as the Shy Princess.
AT ALILA MANGGIS The grounds of the hotel have a reasonable representation of wildlife. Early morning, you can locate by call some vocal birds such as the Pied Fantail. The Bar-winged Prinia is a bird endemic to Java, Sumatra and Bali. A pair of these birds pass through the garden every day. Olive-backed Sunbirds, Scaly-bellied Munias and Spotted Doves are frequent visitors too. You may also spot a Fulvouus-chested Woodpecker or a Coppersmith Barbet. Javan Wood-swallows make regular pit stops on the coconut frond. White-bellied Swiftlets fly to and fro ceaselessly. The hotel is also generously decorated with reed-fringed ponds. You will see a red dragonfly. This is the Ramburi Red Parasol. Take a close look the hindwing has the pale tip extending inwards. The similar Straight-edged Parasol has the red on the wings demarcated from the translucent tips by straight edges on both wings. Other dragonflies include the Green Skimmer and the Blue Percher. The flowering plants are visited by a number of the commoner butterflies including the Common Grass Yellow, Grass Blues and Tigers. In the shaded thickets one may see a common Palm Fly. We are also quite proud of our geckos. The largest (around 17cm in length) is the Tockay Gecko whose call sounds like geck oh, geck oh. The body of this lizard is spotted in vivid red. Look for it in the crevices of the wall with a granite faade near the restaurant and the lounge. You may also spot the Four-clawed Gecko, a very pale looking lizard with nearly translucent skin. And you are almost certain to spot the common House Gecko. A more detailed report A Guide to Watching Wildlife in Bali is available at our Leisure Concierge or through reception. Please request it for more information and a listing of the species seen. Tours with or without an experienced birdwatcher can be arranged. We prefer to tailor these based on the availability of the guide. Please contact our Leisure Concierge for more details

PURI AGUNG KARANGASEM This palace was built in the 19th century by Anak Agung Gede Jelantik, the first king of Karangasem kingdom. Its unique architecture combines Balinese, Chinese and European influences. Located in the centre of Amlapura, Puri Agung is part of our East Bali Tour. TAMAN UJUNG This so-called Water Palace lies at Tumbu village in the Karangasem district. Combining Balinese and European architecture, this summer retreat of the former king features three large ponds within its complex. At the centre of the main pond is a building connected to the edge of the pond by two bridges. Climb the stairs for picture-worthy views from the top. TIRTA GANGGA This water garden built in 1948 by the King of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, invites you to jump in the holy water of the pool (swimming is possible) or take a stroll around the beautifully carved stone statues. It features a very unique mix of Balinese and Chinese architecture. BESAKIH TEMPLE The holy temple Besakih, also called the Mother Temple, is one of the most important temples in Balinese Hinduism. It is located at the south side of the still active volcano Mount Agung and worshipped by all Balinese. It was built by Rsi Markandya in the 11th century. At that time, Rsi Markandya intended to go to Mount Agung to build a residence, but the construction was troubled by the spread of a disease. To keep his family and reign safe, he constructed a veneration to worship God for salvation. The veneration was called sanggar Besakih and became the Mother Temple, where each village (or banjar) has its own temple. ON THE ROAD BETWEEN UBUD AND MANGGIS

PURA GOA LAWAH Known as the Bat Cave Temple, Pura Goa Lawah is located on the coast on the way to Klungkung. The Balinese worship the bats and pythons that live in the widely spread out system of caves, which are said to end in a cave that is part of Pura Besakih near Mount Agung. KLUNGKUNG Bali's smallest district, Klungkung is located between Gianyar and Karangasem, and includes the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan. Klungkung itself is a bustling town, now called Semarapura. KERTA GOSA The Kerta Gosa, meaning hall of justice, stands opposite the big and bustling Klungkung market. Built in the 18th century, it is a superb example of Klungkung architecture. Here between pictures of hell (lowest level) and paradise (highest level), three Brahmin priests meted out punishments. Adjoining Kerta Gosa is the palace, with its beautiful Bale Kambang (or Floating Pavilion). It is notable for its exquisitely painted ceilings depicting stories of the Buddhist King Sutasoma, among others. The Taman Gili (or Garden Pavilion) is a former guards house that lies on the premises with ceilings beautifully painted in wayang style. KAMASAN VILLAGE Located a few kilometres outside Klungkung, Kamasan Village has long been the bastion of traditional paintings. The themes are derived from Balinese variations on the ancient Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. This style has also been adapted for large versions of the zodiac and lunar calendars. Kamasan paintings take their essential characteristics from the wayang tradition. To see a good collection of Kamasan classical paintings, visit the Gunarsa Museum at the crossroads to Tihingan, just before Klungkung. GOA GAJAH Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave, was built at least 700 years ago, although the cave was discovered only in the 1920s. The entrance to this ancient temple features the mouth of a mythical creature with many detailed carvings in the surrounding stone. The complex also comprises two deep stone bathing pools, filled with water from spouts held by six female figures. MAS VILLAGE Located in Ubud sub district and Gianyar Regency in the east of Bali, Mas Village is synonymous with the art of woodcarving. The style typical here distinguishes the synergy between humanism and naturalism. The village's popularity as an arts centre extends to national and world level thanks to masters such as Ida Bagus Tilem who was born here.

JOIN US IN OUR EFFORTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We have identified and are partnering of the following environmental and community projects: THE EAST BALI POVERTY PROJECT There is a remote area high in the mountains of Bali that has been untouched by time and progress. Thousands of families lived here in abject poverty without water, sanitation, roads, adequate nutrition or education. Before this project started in 1999, the children were the main victims. Eight children out of ten were malnourished and had goiter due to iodine deficiency. They had no access to medical care or education due to lack of facilities and the remoteness of the schools. Even water was in scarce supply for drinking and washing. Since then the East Bali Poverty Project has set up schools, initiated supplementary food programmes, medical care centres, etc. All of this is done through donations and voluntary work, including locals wherever possible, to ensure that the people will eventually will be able to help themselves. The projects are ongoing. SEEDS FOR BALI A Reforestation Project Alila Manggis supports this non-profit programme, co-sponsored by the Bali Tourism Development Corporation and in partnership with Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF). For a donation of Rp. 30.000 per tree, saplings are planted on Nusa Penida, the arid island visible across the ocean from Alila Manggis. Through this effort, a former arid land will become a new home to many animals and insects and will enrich the local community. Furthermore, it will offset some of ones carbon footprint, which we all create daily (e.g. through flying by airplane, using electricity, etc.). We encourage you to donate a seed for Bali and come back and see the impact. THE BALI STARLING CONSERVATION PROJECT Since 2005, the rocky limestone island of Nusa Penida had been the new home of the highly endangered Bali Starling. Fourteen kilometers southeast of Bali, visible from Alila Manggis across the Badung Strait, the island covers an area of 78 sqm, with 4 sqm of natural forest. Once a prison island where Klung kungs royal dynastys convicts, undesirables and political agitators were banished, it is now home to farmers, fishermen and seaweed producers. Two pairs of Bali Starlings came home to Bali from England in 1999, to be bred by Begawan Foundation, founded in 1999 by Bradley and Debbie Gardner. In 2005, 95 birds, along with their cages, moved to the Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary and learned how to survive in the wild. In July 2006, the first 12 birds tasted freedom, as their cages were opened. In December 2006, another 12 birds flew free. By February 2009, 59 Bali Starlings had been released, and 57 offspring successfully hatched and fledged. The project had achieved success. Since then, the project has shifted to Ubud and to the Green School. The work of the Begawan Foundation continues with the hope that the Bali Starling, the mascot of Bali will one day be found in sustainable numbers on the mainland of Bali. If you are would like to help to keep this bird from extinction, please let us know.

WHAT WE CAN ALSO DO TO HELP

Alila Manggis tries hard to minimize the impact it creates on the environment as well as the local community. We would like to ask your support during all our experiences. Please collect all your waste and rubbish and carry it to the next bin or bring it back to the hotel for proper disposial. Try to minimize the use of plastic bag. Please do not pluck flowers while trekking. Please respect the wild life. Do not disturb it. Do not touch corals during snorkeling or diving, do not feed the fish and do not leave rubbish in the water. Only fish for what you plan to consume when fishing. Please bring only those which are big enough, do not bring the smaller ones. When in Bali, do as the Balinese do. When visiting temples or remote villages, please be careful about what you wear and how you behave. Our Leisure Concierge will advise you about the proper dress codes and behavior to be followed.
