DAYNAMOMETER
A dynamometer, or "dyno" for short, is a device for measuring force,
moment of force (torque), or power. For example, the power produced
by an engine, motor or other rotating prime mover can be calculated by
simultaneously measuring torque and rotational speed (rpm).

Types of dynamometers:
In addition to classification as absorption, motoring, or universal, as
described above, dynamometers can also be classified in other ways.
A dyno that is coupled directly to an engine is known as an engine dyno.
A dyno that can measure torque and power delivered by the power train
of a vehicle directly from the drive wheel or wheels without removing
the engine from the frame of the vehicle), is known as a chassis dyno.
Dynamometers can also be classified by the type of absorption unit or
absorber/driver that they use. Some units that are capable of absorption
only can be combined with a motor to construct an absorber/driver or
"universal" dynamometer

Types of absorption units:
 Eddy current (absorption only)
 Magnetic powder brake (absorption only)
 Hysteresis brake (absorption only)
 Electric motor/generator (absorb or drive)
 Fan brake (absorption only)
 Hydraulic brake (absorption only)
 Force lubricated, oil shear friction brake (absorption only)
 Water brake (absorption only)
 Compound dyno (usually an absorption dyno in tandem with an
electric/motoring dyno)

How are dynamometers used for engine testing?

Dynamometers are useful in the development and refinement of modern
engine technology. The concept is to use a dyno to measure and compare
power transfer at different points on a vehicle, thus allowing the engine
or drivetrain to be modified to get more efficient power transfer. For
example, if an engine dyno shows that a particular engine achieves
400 𝑁 ⋅ 𝑚 (295 𝑙𝑏𝑓 ⋅ 𝑓𝑡) of torque, and a chassis dynamo shows only
350 𝑁 ⋅ 𝑚 (258 𝑙𝑏𝑓 ⋅ 𝑓𝑡), one would know that the drivetrain losses are
nominal. Dynamometers are typically very expensive pieces of
equipment, and so are normally used only in certain fields that rely on
them for a particular purpose.

TODAY WE GONNA TALK ABOUT HYDRAULIC DYNO:

Construction of Hydraulic Dynamometer:

A hydraulic dynamometer contains a rotating disk that is attached to the
driving shaft of the test machine. The disk has semi elliptical grooves
which allow water steam to flow through them. A stationary casing
mounted on antifriction bearings (also known as trunnion).

What is the use of hydraulic dynamometer?

 Hydraulic dynamometers are used to measure the force,
torque, and power produced by different types of engines,
motors, and other varieties of rotating movers. Power is
capable of being calculated by measuring rotational speed

Working principle?
The hydraulic dynamometer working
compartment consists of special semi-
circular shaped vanes cast into
stainless steel rotor and stators. Water
flowing in a toroidal vortex pattern
around these vanes creates a torque
reaction through the dynamometer
casing which is resisted and measured
by a precision load cell. The dynamometer load is controlled by a
'butterfly' water outlet valve, operated by a closed loop electro-
hydraulic servo system. The power absorbed by the dynamometer is
carried away by the water in the form of heat.

Advantages of Hydraulic Dynamometer:

 It does not require any external cooling arrangement because
water itself serves as coolant. It has high absorption capacity
even in a small space. The instrument can be protected from
hunting effects if it is provided with dashpot-damper
system. It is
economical.
