MATHEMATICS (PROBABILITY) WORKSHEET 12
1. A couple has 2 children. Find the probability that both are boys, if it is
known that
(i) at least One of the children is a boy. (ii). The older child is a
boy. (iii) at least One of the children is a girl.
2. Two digits are selected at random from the digits 1 to 9. If the sum is
even, find the probability that both digits are odd.
3. Two cards are drawn at random from a pack of 52 cards. Find the
probability that the cards are drawn either both red or both aces.
4. X is taking up subjects Maths , Physics and Chemistry in the
examination. His probabilities of getting Grade A in these subjects are
0.2 ,0.3 and 0.5 respectively. Find the probability that he gets
(i) Grade A in all the subjects(ii) Grade A in no subjects(i) Grade A in
two subjects.
5. Ina game, aman wins a rupee for a six and loses a rupee for any
other number when a fair die is thrown. The man decided to throw a
die thrice but to quit as and when he gets a six. Find the expected
value of the amount he wins/loses.
6. Aand B throw a pair of dice turn by turn. The first to throw 9 is
awarded a prize. If A starts the game show that the probability of
getting the prize is =
7. The probabilities of two students A and B coming to the school in time
ares and $ respectively. Assuming that the events A coming in time
and B coming in time are independent find the probability of only one
of them coming to the school in time.
8. A letter is known to have come either
fromTATANAGAR or KOLKATA. On envelope only the two
consecutive letters TA are visible. What is the probability that the
letter has come from (i) KOLKATA (ii) TATANAGAR

. Given three identical boxes I , J] and III each containing two coins.
In I, both coins are gold coins , in box I] both are silver coins and in
box III , there is one gold and one silver coin. A person chooses a box
at random and takes out a coin. If the coin is of gold, what is the
probability that the other coin in the box is also of gold.
10. Of the students in a school, it is known that 30% has 100% attendance
and 70% students are irregular. Previous year results report that 70%
of all students who has 100% attendance attain A grade and 10%
irregular students attain A grade in their annual examination. At the
end of the year, one student is chosen at random from the school and
he has A grade. What is the probability that the student has 100%
attendance? Is irregularity required only in school? Justify your
answer.
11. A man is known to speak truth 3 out of 4 times. He throws a die and
reports that it is a 6. Find the probability that it is actually a 6.
12. Three cards are drawn from a pack of 52 cards. Find the probability
distribution of the number of aces.
13. A random variable X has the following probability distribution.
Determine the value of a.
Find P(x < 3),P(x => 4) ,P(Q 0.6
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
P(x) [a 4a 3a 7a 8a 10a [6a 9a
14. Two numbers are selected at random without replacement from the
first six positive integers. Let X denote the larger of the two
numbers obtained. Find E(x) and Var(x).
15. Two cards are drawn without replacement from a well shuffled pack
of 52 cards. Find the mean and variance of the number of red cards.
16. A problem in Mathematics is given to 3 students whose chances of
solving it are 3 5 : What is the probability that the problem is
solved? Find the probability that exactly one of them solved.

Suppose that 5 men out of 100 and 25 women out of 1000 are good
orators. Assuming that there are equal number of men and women,
find the probability of choosing an orator.
Suppose that 5 males out of 100 and 25 females out of 1000 are good
orators. An orator is chosen at random. Find the probability that a
male person is chosen. Assume that there are equal number of
males and females.
20% of the bulbs produced by a machine are defective. Find the
probability distribution of the number of defective bulbs when 4
bulbs are drawn one by one with replacement.
A bag contains 5 white and 7 red and 8 black balls. If 5 balls are
drawn one by one with replacement, find the probability distribution
of the number of red balls drawn.
Two cards are drawn successively with replacement from a well
shuffled pack of 52 cards. Find the mean and variance for the number
of aces.

throws of a pair of dice.
Three bad eggs got mixed up with 7 good eggs. If 3 eggs are drawn
from 10 eggs. Find the mean and variance for the number of bad
eggs among them.
Aclass has 15 students whose ages are 14,17,15,14,21,17,19,
20,16,18,20,17,16, 19 and 20 years. One student is selected in
such a manner that each has the same chance of being chosen and
the age X of the selected student is recorded. What is the probability
distribution of a random variable X . Find the mean , variance and SD
of X.
In an examination, 10 questions of true — false type are asked. A
student tosses a fair coin to determine his answer to each question.
If the coin falls heads, he answers ‘true’ and if it falls tails, he answers
‘false’. Show the probability that he answers at most 7 questions
