Q1. Where did Samuel Pepys think that the fire had begun and who told him it had
started?
Ans1. Jane was the one who made Samuel aware of the great fire that she had seen
from her window, and Samuel looking through his window thought that it was on
the backside of Marke-lane.
Q2. Explain what Pepys means by referring to the fire as lamentable.
Ans2. Pepys has realized that fire has gotten out of control and it has spread
everywhere. It's horribly powerful and it will be quite a struggle to put it out.
Q3. What were most people doing instead of trying to put out the fire?
Ans.3 People were flinging their possessions into boats and trying to save
themselves, the poor even going as far as staying inside the house to save it from
the fire.
Q4. What two things does Pepys say were making the fire worse?
Ans4. Pepys believed that the people not doing anything about the fire and just
removing their things or as Pepys calls it “goods.” He also writes in his diary that
the drought was going to help in making the fire even more terrible.
Q7. At the end of the extract, what other reasons does Pepys give for why the fire
was spreading so fiercely?
Ans7. At the end of the extract Pepys tells us that the biggest reason for the fire
spreading is the endless warehouses of wine, oil, brandy and many other
flammable things catch on fire and the fire increases by double.
