There are different ways to say newspaper in Arabic, the mostly and widely used word is “ ‫جریدہ‬

”, “Jareedah”.

the root word is either “Jard” “ ‫” جرد‬, which means “Inventory/Collection”

that shows the collection or inventory of news.

Or the root word could be “Jareed”, “ ‫” جرید‬, which means “Grid”.

that shows the way the news normally shown in the pattern of columns or grids.

There are other words as a translation as well, not very commonly used but understood;

newspaper, paper, sheet, journal, leaf : ‫صحيفة‬

newspaper, quotidian : ‫جريدة يومية‬

newspaper : ‫أخباري‬

One thing to note, the letter “ ‫ ” ج‬is read in general Arabic as “J”, but in Egyptian Arabic its “G”.
