To Study Design and Testing of Microstrip patch antenna.

Objective: Microstrip patch antenna is very well known form of printed antenna. It is very popular because of its low profile, simple geometry and low coast. This kind of antennas are extremely better choice for embedded antennas in wireless devices such as cellular phones, pagers etc.. They also have some features like light weight, low volume, low fabrication cost, supports both linear as well as circular polarization. Introduction: Microstrip patch antennas are gaining popularity in wireless application due to their low-profile structure, Simple geometry and low fabrication cost. It is a very common and important element in communications and radar applications since it provides a wide variety of designs, either planar or conformal. In addition, microstrip antennas can be fed by various techniques, besides its advantage of being compact and suitable for antenna array designs. The microstrip antenna generally consists of a radiating element (patch), an intermediate dielectric layer, and a ground plane. The patch antenna have a radiating patch on top side of a dielectric substrate which has a ground plane on the lower side as shown in figure. The radiating element or patch is generally made of conducting material such as copper or gold and can take any possible shape like rectangular, square, circular, elliptical, triangular etc...

Fig. Microstrip linefeed patch antenna Working: We have designed a rectangular microstrip patch antenna using FEM based ANSOFTS High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS), Which is operating at 5 GHz. The single patch antenna consist of radiating patch, transmission line of 50 , Substrate and a 50 coaxial connector. The rectangular microstrip patch antenna is designed for the following specifications Operating Frequency: 5GHz Height of the substrate: 1 mm Dielectric substrate: HRPS (High resistive polycrystalline silicon) Dielectric constant of the HRPS substrate : 11.9 Width of the microstrip patch antenna: 17.28 mm Length of the microstrip patch antenna: 13.50 mm Width of the Patch: 11.82 mm Length of the Patch: 8.28 mm

For the theoretical design following equations are used

Simulation: The design is performed using the 3D electromagnetic simulator HFSS. Following figure shows the simulated antenna structure and its return loss curve. We have also compute the antenna parameters like radiation pattern, peak directivity, peak gain, radiated power, accepted power, radiation efficiency.
