1. The closure of schools around the world due to the global pandemic posed serious
challenges on the delivery of quality basic education. As a teacher, what do you
think are the fundamental concerns in terms of curriculum standards that need to be
addressed in order to ensure learning continuity? Cite a specific example. Do you
think these concerns could be solved by teachers alone? Why or why not?

2. Even prior to the spread of COVID-19 that eventually led to the closure of schools
nationwide, the congested curriculum has been a perennial problem of teachers
( Andaya,2018 ). This is perceived to be one of the hindering factors on the poor
performance of Filipino learners. Do you agree with this observation? Why or why
not?

ANSWERS:

1.Because of the global pandemic that we encounter, there are some private
schools decide to close their school, result of low number of enrolees. As a teacher
the primary concern is how to deliver a k-12 curriculum which is align to MELC, so
that we used continue the curriculum even in the time of many challenges in
education . The k-12 curriculum to the distance learning like modular, online
learning, radio, television and combination of any of the two as blended learning.
Despite the many challenges ,the Bureau of curriculum development ensures that
learning standards are relevant and flexible.

nationwide by the field implementers for SY 2020-2021. The teacher cannot do it
alone but through the help of Department of Education officials , government
officials , teachers , parents and the learners. We can resolve the problem. Unity
is very important.

observe other country they have only concentrated and important subject, there is
no repetition of topic .From other grade there is no redundancy that’s why they
introduced K- 12 curriculum to decongest the curriculum facilities But now that
were going to use MELC for this SY 2020-2021 will lessen the congestion in the
curriculum .And served as a guide of the teachers in teaching process.

learning competencies?

2. The curriculum review the aid in identification of essential learning

competencies,by the department through the bureau of curriculum development-
curriculum standards development division, in collaboration with the assessment
curriculum and technology research centre.

3. The difference between essential learning competencies and desirable learning

competencies. The Essential learning competencies are defined as what the
students need, , in the teaching- learning process to building skills to equip learners.
While desirable learning competencies were defined as what may enhance
education but does not necessary in building foundational skills.

4. The most essential learning competencies by the bureau of curriculum

development accelerated the identification of the essential learning competencies,
and streamlined these further into the most essential learning competencies(MELC)
in determining the criteria for selection of the most essential learning competencies.
A learning competency is considered enduring if it remains with learners long after a
test or unit study is completed.

5. The importance of MELCs in ensuring the delivery of quality instruction all

learning areas will still be taken up by the learners in all grade levels, but with the
streamlined competencies and align to the K-12 Curriculum. This is to ensure that
the learning outcomes are still achieved even in this time of pandemic.

ACTIVITY 3:

Prepare a copy of your learning area’s original K-12 Curriculum Guide and
corresponding list of MELCs.

Go to the sections of the curriculum guide and MELCs that are relevant to your
instructional needs. Copy and accomplish the following table in your Study Notebook and

the following guide questions in your Study Notebook:

1. What is the importance of unpacking and combining the MELCs?

2. What considerations must be taken in unpacking and combining the
MELCs? Explain each.
3. Do all the MELCs need to be unpacked or combined? Why or why not?

create focused learning targets to make them action. All learning areas will still be
taken up by the learners in all grade levels, but with the streamlined competencies.
this is to ensure that the learning outcomes are still achieved even in this pandemic.

2. The consideration in unpacking and combining the MELCs is that, when the
learning competency is to be retained, merged, dropped, rephrased as general rule.
A learning competency was retained if it satisfies the endurance criterion which
greatly contributes to life- long learning and is a pre-requisite skill to the next grade
level.

3. No! Only those important who have similar objective, introduce in early quarter or
Level or moved to a later quarter or grade level. When they are recurring,
subsumed in another learning competency
