1. Mention and describe the young girl, teacher and grandparents using two character
modifiers per character. Be sure to support your answers with evidence from the text.
Young Girl: learner and clever. “And clever,” the grandfather said. “Writes every day in
her book.
Teacher: wealthy and unaware. “Because you see,” the grandfather said, “your teacher,
she buy all her cabbages from the supermarket and that’s why
Grandparents: proud and hard workers. “And clever,” the grandfather said. “Writes every
day in her book.” When the granddaughter came home from school her grandfather was hoeing
around the cabbages. Her grandmother was picking beans. They stopped their work.

2. How do the young girl and her grandparents view butterflies? How does the teacher
view butterflies? Be sure to cite the text when supporting your answers. Why do they
have these opposing views of butterflies?
Her grandparents had a different view, they view butterflies as something that disturbs their
harvest. “Because you see,” the grandfather said, “your teacher, she buy all her cabbages from
the supermarket and that’s why.” The teacher sees the butterflies as beautiful creatures that
should not be killed. “She said butterflies are beautiful creatures. They hatch out and fly in the
sun. The butterflies visit all the pretty flowers, she said. They lay their eggs and then they die.
You don’t kill butterflies, that’s what she said.” The grandparents of the young girl were farmers
and poor, so they had a different point of view about butterflies because they see butterflies all
the time. The teacher is a wealthier person, and she doesn’t know the life of a farmer and the
struggles they have with the harvest. She buys the food in the supermarket and that’s it. “Because
you see,” the grandfather said, “your teacher, she buy all her cabbages from the supermarket and
that’s why.”

4. Discuss the prevailing conflict. Is it resolved? How?

The prevailing conflict is that we see the contrast of the wealthy people and the poor. The
wealthy people like the teacher, don’t know the process of the farmers have to go through so that
they can have their food.

5. What theme emerges from this conflict? What do we get to know about the world, life,
humans, or human nature? What other element of the story can you use to discuss the theme?
How does this element contribute to the development of the theme?
A theme that can come out of this short story is the difference and if we can call it racism, that
there is in our society, especially the rich and the poor. The rich often despise the poor and do
not appreciate their work. They think very differently from them and do not realize that many of
their goods, like the food, are thanks to them, the least benefited people.
