Two Million Dollar Charity

1. What should you do with the money? Explain. (15 points)

● I would rather forget my promise to the old millionaire and give the money to the
charity than to the Yankees. He’s dead anyway, he cannot feel sad or
disappointed anymore if I did not fulfill my promise to him, it will not affect his
judgment either. Besides, the money will be used to help those who are really in
need and can help to build a sustainable economy.

The Trolley Problem

1. How does Utilitarianism apply in this situation? Explain and apply Bentham’s Hedonic
Calculus in this situation. (20pts)
● Utilitarianism is applied in this situation in the decision making, whether to divert
the trolley unto another track that has only one person on it or stay on the other
track which has five people on it. Betham’s calculation can be applied in this
situation, especially the seventh circumstance, which is the pleasure’s extent,
which considers the number of persons to whom it extends or who are affected
by the action.

2. Will you divert the trolly onto another track in order to save the FIVE people? Explain
thoroughly answer your question. (10pts)
● I will definitely divert the trolley onto another track to save the five people, and
also save the one person on the other track, because it is easilier to untie the
only person than the five people on the other track before the trolley comes in
his/her direction. Through that, I didn't just save the lives of the five people but
the total of six people, no one will be killed by the trolley if you will use your brain
wisely.
3. Will your answer be the same if the ONE person at the other track is your loved one?
Why yes or why not? (Example of loved one: your parent, your grandparent, your only
child, your husband/wife, your only best friend). (10pts)
● Based on my answer in number two question, yes, I will still divert the cart in
his/her direction and still save him/her. Again, it is because it’s easier to untie one
person than five people before the trolley comes in his/her direction.

Baby Theresa

1.Should Baby Theresa have been killed so that her organs could have been used to
save
other children? Explain thoroughly your answer. (15pts)
● No, we have no right to kill someone, even the unconscious infant for the sake of
others. Killing is still a crime, worst, it’s a sin. Knowing that baby Theresa has
only a few days to live, it is better to give her a chance to just live her life until her
last breath and die naturally. Also, we still don’t know what tomorrow brings,
miracles still happen right? What if there is a miracle waiting for her but we
already end her life?

2. Will your answer be the same if you are the parent? Why yes or why not? (10pts)
● Yes, because if I were her parents, I will not surrender my child, I will stay beside
her and will make her feel my love. I will fight for her until her last breath.
Because I carried her nine months in my tummy, why would I let them take my
right to be with my baby? If she only lives for 9 days then I would rather cherish
those days with her by my side.

3. Can Utilitarianism still be applied given the fact that Baby Theresa has the right to live
and
not to be killed? Why yes or why not? (20pts)
● I think yes, in the situation where there are more kids that have more chances to
live than Baby Theresa’s situation. Because utilitarianism states that what is
useful is good, I think that donating her organs is good also, knowing that she
only has a few days to live.
