Presentation Skills

Introduction

Presentation is the practice of showing and explaining

the content of a topic to the audience
A presentation is a tool by which you can convey your
message clearly
Planning and practice makes a presentation perfect
Both verbal and non-verbal communication plays an
important role in the presentation
Presentation Skills

The 4 P's

Plan : The speaker should know why he /

she is giving a presentation and who the
audience is

Prepare : Get ready with the content

which you are going to deliver

Practice : The more you practise the more

will be the improvement

Present : Confirm the date, time and place

of the presentation
Presentation Skills

Pre preparation

Decide on the objective of the presentation. What, why

and how you want to convey the message
Prepare content and structure of your presentation
logically
Clearly convey the objectives
Divide the presentation into parts (i.e., opening,
content and closing) and highlight the main points
Go through the content thoroughly and practise it
before the mirror. This helps you to overcome stage
fear and present yourself confidently
Presentation Skills

Practising in front of the mirror helps you improve your non-verbal communication
Know the pulse of the audience and visualise the presentation accordingly
Prepare and complete your presentation in time
Be formal in your appearance (well pressed formal attire)
Reach early and know the arrangements. (Seating arrangement, microphone,
projector and other facilities)
Presentation Skills

During the presentation

Take the stage from the right or left

Greet the audience with a pleasant smile
You should be audible and visible
See that you should adjust your voice according
to the audience and seminar hall
Be formal and maintain positive body language
Presentation Skills

Maintain proper eye-contact with all the audience and

move around
If you are wearing spectacle ensure they have non-
reflective glass in them to avoid the lights bounce
Convey your message in simple way for easy
understanding
Use jargons only when it is required and explain them
Do not get diverted from the topic
Presentation Skills

An opening lays a strong foundation for your

presentation
Deliver the content in various phases covering all the
important points
Before concluding, summarise all the main points
Restate the learning points for the audience
Be yourself. Natural humour will make the
presentation lively
Give relevant examples to help the audience
understand the topic
Presentation Skills

Post presentation

Try to interact with few participants to know

the feedback
After reaching home review your presentation
critically
Try to know the answers (if they were
unanswered) for the questions that were
raised in the presentation
Note down the areas of improvement and
work on them
See that you will practise, improve and do not
repeat the same mistakes in your next
presentation

Dos and Don’ts of Presentation

Presentation Skills

Things to do

Give yourself enough time to plan, write, edit and rewrite the content
Practice, practice, and practice there are no shortcuts to success
Limit the amount of information you give in the allotted time
Find out the required information about your audience before the presentation
Make sure your script is easy to use. (PPT’s, videos, etc)
Presentation Skills

Ensure that the slides or handouts are placed in

correct order
Remember to make eye-contact with as many people
as possible. Speak clearly with a medium rate of
speech
Give the audience a moment to read your slide before
you start speaking
Stick to the schedule. People get bored with long
presentation. You may exclude unnecessary
information
Use the question and answer session as an opportunity
to give extra information on the topic
Presentation Skills

Things to avoid

Avoid looking at the ceiling, the floor or the window

It is not a good idea to memorise the content of your presentation
Avoid playing with pointers, keys, spectacle etc
Don’t wave your hands aimlessly while gesturing
Don’t move unnecessarily
Presentation Skills

Heavy pockets or hands in your pockets looks odd

Don’t point out finger
Don’t speak unprofessionally
Avoid informal attire and unpolished shoe
Don’t frequently divert from the topic
Presentation Skills
