Lab 01A: Knowing the Engineering Office Equipment

Note: Create a Word Document as an answer sheet (one for each student). The answer
sheet should meet the required class format as stated in “CAD101 Format.pdf.”

1. Go over this list in your team and make sure you all know what these components are
used for.
a. Mouse j. Joystick
b. Fax k. USB port
c. Modem l. Scanner
d. CD ROM m. Hard disk drive
e. Digitizer n. Printer
f. Sound Card and Speakers o. Plotter
g. Flash or thumb drive p. Floppy disk
h. Tape back-up q. Web cam
i. Microphone r. Keyboard
List any of these devices that were new to you or you had to look up to define.

2. Create a listing of at least three to five main category names of computers and their uses
based on their size and performance. Here are some things to consider when coming up
with the names:
a. Some are generally very large and act as a main controller so that each user is
dependant on this central computer
b. Some of the most common computer types got their name from being accessible
to most any person who can buy one.
c. Some are named after their ability to fold up and go with you anywhere.
d. Some work with no mouse or keyboard but use a touch screen instead.
e. Some are used for industrial equipment to control machinery.
f. Others?

3. Come up with a short definition for the following file types:


a. Application files
b. Data files
c. Files that end with .exe, .bat, etc.
d. Htm and html files
e. Files that end with dll
f. Back-up files
g. Archive files

4. Create a short definition for each of the following that would make each one unique from
the others (size, paper type, print head style, etc.).

a. Dot matrix printer


b. Laser jet printer
c. Ink jet printer
