The BC Oil and Gas Commission is considered a single-window regulatory agency.

It is
responsible for overseeing oil and gas operations, from site planning to restoration, which
include exploration, development, and pipeline transportation in British Columbia. It aims to
ensure that activities are undertaken in a manner that protects public safety, conserves the
environment, supports meaningful reconciliation, and advances the public interest.

When companies have an interest in exploring, developing, and producing oil and gas
resources in B.C., they must apply for oil and gas activity permits, communicate their
intentions with affected landowners or residents and engage with the first nation. Also, they
must set a plan for its future restoration before starting their project. Finally, using policies and
regulations set by the provincial government, the commission will make decisions.
