Manta Rays

Dr.Robert Rubin has been selected by the state of california. The United States senate

and congress to receive their awards for outstanding contributions to college and university

teaching. He is the recipient of nice side award for outstanding contributions to higher

education. In 1996 the Carnegie foundation honored Dr. Robert Rubin with advancement of

teaching as california college and university professor of the year

He has 25 years working on Manta Rays. In the video he explains what he knows of the

Manta ray and the Black Form spices. He said the Ocean Mantas are wide and straight line

between posterior pointing white patches. Gray mouth, bulge behind dorsal fin. Seamounts are

in large oceanic islands whose size is up to 29 feet . Dr. Robert Rubin has always asked himself

why they aren’t discovered yet and when he started learning more about the Ocean Manta Rays

he realized that it was very expensive because they were just in one location and they wouldn't

move to a new spot and they are so deep down in the ocean. When he was down there he

found another similar species, very close to the Manta Rays. They named them the Black Form.

The Black Form has a dorsal surface all black slightly different. The Black Forms are slightly

different because the Black Forms were all black but little spots under them. The Manta Rays

were all gray with white spots on top of them. They all eat the same foods such as small fish

and shrimp and much more. He also found out that they started to become extinct. He tries to

protect them so they don't go extinct. Manta Rays are usually located in the mexican pacific

area.

Dr. Robert Rubin also discovered two new species of whales. One of the new species he

found was named the Bailing whale. They were about 45 ft in length. The second new species

he found was named the beached whale, which is an unusual animal. The beached whale does
deep diving. The beached whale dives 10,000 feet deep for several hours. Dr. Rubin doesn’t

know that much about those species of whales yet. But when he was down in the water he

found fossils of ancient sharks. He found a fossil of a shark that looks like its mouth got hit by a

bus and the mouth is rolled back to its stomach. They are very fast too. They are aggressive

marine predators feeding on squid and fish and so on .

I feel like his job is very cool and scary because I’ve been to a large ocean and I went very deep

and when I looked down I was very high up and it looked very scary but cool at the same time.

But the cool part I find pretty cool about his job is that he gets to discover new things and he

gets to meet new friends like new species of animals. I find it very scary that he discovers big

new animals because they are like 100x his size. It can easily just eat you. But if i were to have

his job I wouldn't do it because I would be afraid to go up to a big whale and observe it . But I

find his job very cool.

Manta Rays

The sea creatures live in tropical, subtropical, and temperate ocean

waters across the globe. “Manta” means blanket or cloak in Spanish,

describing the look of the animals’ large, flat, diamond-shaped bodies,

which are characterized by triangular pectoral fins. The Manta Rays have

two horn shaped fins protruding from their front of their heads and they

also have another nickname,Their name is devil fish. For decades

scientists thought there was only one species of Manta Rays. In 2008

they found 2 distinct species: the reef manta ray, which tends to live

along coastlines in the Indo-Pacific, and the giant oceanic manta ray,

which lives in all the world’s major oceans, spending most of its life far

from land.
