ABOUT THE SRMIST
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as 'SRM University') is located in an extensive sylvan campus
of 380 acres skirting the National Highways (NH145), in the outskirts of Chennai. SRMIST is one of the top ranking
Universities and most premier engineering destinations in India, which was established in 1985 by the Founder
Chancellor, Dr. T.R. Paarivendhar. Now it is functioning in campuses located at Kattankulathur, Ramapuram,
Vadapalani, Modi Nagar (Ghaziabad), and Tiruchirappalli with over 52000 students and 3200 faculty members, offering
wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in Engineering, Management, Medicine & Health
Sciences, Agriculture, Law and Science & Humanities. The Institution has moved up through international alliances and
collaborative initiatives to achieve global excellence. SRMIST also collaborates with various foreign Universities. Now
the Institute enjoys an unsurpassed reputation in academic and corporate circles being the preferred manpower source
for vision to be recognized as a world - class learning institution. SRMIST has been accorded Category I status by
MHRD-UGC of Government of India and also accredited by NAAC with 'A++' Grade in the year 2018.

ABOUT DEPARTMENT
.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the pioneering departments of SRMIST. The department is
functionally divided into three broad areas of specialization: (i) Design (ii) Manufacturing and (iii) Thermal. B.Tech
Mechanical Engineering program at Kattankulathur campus is accredited by Engineering Accreditation Commission
(EAC) of ABET, USA, (www.abet.org). The department also offers M.Tech, and Doctoral programs in various
specializations. The present faculty strength is 115. Around 1000 research papers have been published in peer reviewed
high impact factor international journals and 1000 papers have been presented in national and international conferences.
More than 30 patents have been filed in national and international levels. The following conferences (recent) was
conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kattankulathur: 2nd International Conference on Advances in
Mechanical Engineering (ICAME 2018), 3rd International Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering (ICAME
2020), First virtual International Conference on Advances in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems (ICARSES
2020), International Conference on Advances in Thermal Engineering and Application (ICATEA 2021), International
Conference on Recent Advances in Manufacturing Engineering Research (ICRAMER 2021), International Conference
on Advances in Mechanical Engineering Design (ICAMED 2021).

Vision: To impart knowledge to our students in an ambience of Humanity, Wisdom, Intellect, Creativity of Innovation,
in order to nurture them culturally and Ethically rich professionals with bright future.
Mission #1. To impart quality education to produce mechanical engineers and enhance their skills to become world
renowned professionals.
Mission #2. To establish Centers of Research Excellence to inculcate research acumen in faculty and students on the
areas like; machining, biomechanics, bio-fuels, composites, and energy.
Mission #3. To provide state-of-the-art education and training programs to the faculty and student fellowship.
ABOUT THE FDP
The statistical principles underlying design of experiments were largely developed by R. A. Fisher during the 1920s and
1930s. Over the past 15 years, there has been a tremendous increase in the application of experimental design techniques
in almost all types of industries. The work of G.Taguchi on robust design for variation reduction had revolutionary impact
on Japanese industry. Today industries all over the world use design of experiments for problem solving and robust
product development. The academic community use design of experiments extensively to prove or validate their research
findings. Design of Experiments is the most powerful statistical tool that will provide the most significant information
possible with the least amount of work. DOE has gained common acceptance among the researchers of various
disciplines. Its cost effectiveness, greater speed and its ability to reveal design limitations not apparent with the traditional
experimental methods make DOE approach more vital in research field. The objective of this course is to provide faculty
members and students a theoretical and practical knowledge on the Design of Experiments and the skill required to
analyze engineering problems with a commercially available software package. This course is designed in such a way
that, in addition to the fundamental topics, advance topics have been included in line with the current research scenario
which will be covered through expert lectures and hands on training. Also this FDP is devoted to addressing the need to
enhance the knowledge about the Optimization Techniques in Engineering Applications is being conducted at SRM
Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.
