COMPARE & CONTRAST

Cinderella

Authors: Charles Perrault & Brothers Grimm

Genre: Fairytale

The story of Cinderella comes from the idea of our ancestor’s folk tales and Charles Perrault, a French
poet, prose writer, and storyteller, decided to write his own version to preserve this story. The story
according to my research is derived from the oldest known oral version of the Cinderella story is the
ancient Greek story of Rhodopis, a Greek courtesan living in the colony of Naucratis in Egypt, whose
name means “Rosy-Cheeks”. But for my own idea I think that the story is derived from the folk tales of
the Greek times.

Summary of the Story

Cinderella is about a young girl who is searching for love and freedom. In the story, she lives with her
stepmother and two stepsisters. The prince invites all the females in the kingdom to a ball, but
Cinderella’s stepmother tries to keep her from going. Nothing goes right for Cinderella and just when
she thinks she’ll never go to the ball, her fairy Godmother appears to help her get ready for the ball.
When she gets to the ball, the prince falls in love with her, but under the conditions from her fairy
Godmother, Cinderella is required to leave the ball by midnight. While running out just before midnight,
Cinderella loses her shoe. The prince uses that shoe to find out who his mystery love was; after he learns
that Cinderella’s foot is a perfect fit, they get married and live happily ever after. In the story, the
stepmother and stepsisters are all evil and out to sabotage Cinderella and any chance she may have at
happiness. I think the theme of this book focuses on what kindness can do for a person. Good things
come to those who put their best foot forward and treat everyone with kindness.

The another story similar to the story of Cinderella which is the story of Ashputtel by Grimm Brothers,
there are similarities between the two of these stories because both has the same settings, characters
and even the theme of the story for me which is the Evil vs Good ,rising and falling actions and
denouement. For the differences of the story is where the part of the story in Grimm’s Brother there is a
bit disturbing scene such as the cutting of the toes and squeezing of the foot of the stepsisters, however
for the Cinderella story there are no blood and even violent things happening that is not good for the
audience specially kids but rather the story is not that bad and it can be also shown to kids because its
been written in a friendly and professional way. The only commonalities of the story from different
version are, how they portray or how they act the story. The differences the figure of the character, the
settings. In the 1st video you will see the graphics was good, there’s a literal body of the character, the
place background was presented which making the story more interesting, while on the 2nd video was
the figure of character was only stick which don’t show the real figure of an person.

The characters in the story are Cinderella, King, Prince, Step Mother and Stepsisters. The settings of the
story are the Palace or the home of the King and prince, the house of where Cinderella, the Step Mother
and Step sisters live and the graveyard of the mother with a hazel nut tree.
