Discussion #1: Equity and Social Justice in Action

Deadline: Jan 21 (11:59 PM)

The purpose of this assignment is to help make a meaningful connection between an equity/social
justice issue and your direct experience while integrating concepts explored in this course. It will also
help prepare you for the Final Paper. Aim for 300-500 words (2-3 paragraphs).

 Please share an equity and social justice issue that you care about: why is this issue
important to you? What connects you to this issue?

 In Chapter 1 of Deep Diversity, the author states that according to research, we tend to
exhibit more empathy, care and concern toward people who are most like ourselves
(Choudhury, 2021: 19). Do you think you must be part of the community (cultural or identity-
based group) to work effectively with people from that community? Why or why not?
Ground your answer in what you have learned from the reading.

You are invited to draw from your own direct experience through personal, work/volunteer,
learning, or interactions in the community. Do not feel you need to share overly personal
information or difficult experiences.

Additional Notes and Guidelines

 Use first person language (“I” statements).

 Use in-text APA citations guidelines when citing sources in your post.
 IMPORTANT: When sharing examples, please ensure privacy and confidentiality by not
using any information that can identify individuals.
 Please refer to the assignment instructions on the first page for more information on posting
guidelines and how this post will be assessed.

Discussion #2: Creating Meaningful Change

Deadline March 25 (11:59 PM)

Think about the equity/social justice issue that you were discussing in your first post.

Imagine that the organization where you work has just received a million dollars in government
funding (with possibility for renewal if successful) to create a new program, project or initiative that
will help address this issue (or certain aspects of the issue). You have been appointed to a taskforce
in charge of developing the program and deciding how the funding will be used.

This is your opportunity to be innovative and creative!

 What new program or initiative will you propose? What is the core premise and how will it
address the issue? For example, what approach will it use and what kind of services or
activities will it offer? If your initiative aims to modify/improve upon an existing service – how
will it do that? (1-2 paragraphs)

 Who will you engage and consult in the development of your program/initiative and why?
How will you ensure your planning process is culturally relevant and inclusive? Think about
your key stakeholders and community partners, including people directly impacted by the
issue. Is there an organization doing similar work? Use the 211 online directory to find out.

Use in-text APA citations guidelines when using other authors’ ideas or referring to sources in your
post (mere links to sources are not an acceptable reference format).

Before posting, please review the submission and assessment guidelines on the first page.
