Herodotus published his magnum


opus, "The Histories," a lengthy
account of the Greco-Persian Wars.
(The word "historie" in Greek means
"inquiry.") No writer before Herodotus
had conducted such a systematic,
in-depth study of the past or attempted
to explain the cause-and-effect of its
events. Which is why Herodotus is Fragment from Histories

The Calmecac was a school for the


sons of Aztec nobles. They learned
literacy, history, religious rituals, and
military arts at school.

This, along with the Inca and Mayan


schools, were the first examples of history
being taught in the Americas.

1776

Historian Edward Gibbon is best known for


writing The History of the Decline and Fall of
the Roman Empire (1776–88). The book is
well-known for its objectivity and extensive
use of primary sources. This methodology
served as a model for subsequent historians.
As a result, Gibbon is regarded as the first
modern historian.

The National Education Association (NEA)
appoints a Committee of Seven to
investigate high school curriculum issues
and make recommendations on teaching
methods and standards. The Committee
of Seven proposed that history, civil
government, and political economy should
be taught in all public high schools. They
also emphasized teaching modern history.

The National Education Association's


Committee on Social Studies issued a report in
1916 that formally introduced social studies into
the school curriculum. It established the term
"social studies" and recognized the value of
history and the social sciences in civic

California proposed a law that Black history
should be taught in schools, despite the fact
that there was no formal curriculum in place.

Teaching black history paved the way for other


minority groups' histories to be taught. It broadened
the scope of American history as a discipline. People
were debating who's history should be taught in

State Standards was conceptualized by
individual state leaders in social studies
education. The goal was to provide
guidance to states and local school
districts on how to improve the rigor of
K-12 civics, economics, geography, and

The 2016 History-Social Science
Framework (HSS) identifies LGBT
history and social studies topics that
should be taught at various grade
levels. Today six states teach
LGBTQ+ history: California,
Colorado, Oregon, New Jersey,
Rhode Island, and Washington
