Why improper use of non-verbal cues causes misconceptions in communication

When we discuss "communication," we frequently refer to "what we say," or the language that
we employ. Interpersonal communication, however, encompasses much more than just the information
or message that words explicitly communicate. It also includes nonverbal behaviors that convey implicit
messages, whether they are intended to or not. Facial expressions, voice tone and pitch, body language
gestures (kinesics), and physical proximity between communicators are all examples of non-verbal
communication (proxemics). Beyond spoken (verbal) communication, these non-verbal cues can provide
additional information, meaning, and hints. In fact, according to some estimates, between 70 and 80
percent of communication is nonverbal!

Both face-to-face communication and mediated communication use a lot of nonverbal cues.
Nonverbal communication is an effective tool for controlling our social interactions with others since it
often occurs naturally and frequently outside of awareness. However, there can be misunderstandings in
communication when non-verbal cues are misused, such as when body language is misinterpreted. Using
nonverbal cues to communicate is confusing. It doesn't have a single clear meaning. As a result, it
frequently causes misunderstandings and incorrect readings of body language. It is culturally dependent
because "the meaning of body language cues varies depending upon cultural factors described as
languages of context, time, and space." For instance, head nodding is perplexing because moving the head
up and down in one culture is interpreted as agreement, while moving it from side to side in another
signifies disagreement.

Nonverbal communication is usually influenced by the setting and the particular culture. Another
type of nonverbal communication is appearance. Body type, weight, hair color, skin tone, face color, and
clothing all have an impact on the message that is conveyed. People are evaluated based on how they
look. "Dress to impress" is a phrase that can be influenced by clothing. Moral character, religion, social
background, social position, and both good and negative perceptions or assumptions are just a few of the
positive and negative messages that one's physical appearance can convey. For instance, in America, I
observed that Americans incorrectly believed that Muslim women who wore the hijab (a head covering)
were closed-minded because "covering the head meant covering the mind." Another unfounded belief
about Muslim women's head coverings is that it is due to their baldness. Due to these presumptions,
several American businesses refused to recruit Muslim women on the grounds that they are narrow-
minded. A Muslim woman responded to these assertions by saying, "I choose to cover my head but not
my thoughts." Despite vast disparities in their religious views, Muslim women and Catholic nuns both
wear headscarves as part of their traditional attire. However, modesty is referred to as a habit by Roman
Catholic nuns.
In conclusion, nonverbal communication refers to any information or emotions conveyed through
behaviors or body language. It varies depending on the culture. In nonverbal communication, cultural
differences are important because they affect how people interpret and understand particular nonverbal
signs. Non-verbal communication barriers are the roadblocks, issues, or walls that keep individuals apart
and prevent them from understanding one another. They frequently provide difficulties for individuals,
teams, multinational corporations, governments, countries, and the entire planet. The study came to the
conclusion that misinterpreting human behavior and misinterpreting cultural context during intercultural
communication cause non-verbal cultural barriers. When the speaker and listener do not fully
comprehend each other's cultures, miscommunication, misunderstanding, and incorrect interpretation of
nonverbal cues will result. Therefore, non-verbal language barriers can result in issues with
miscommunication between individuals in cross-cultural communication, including misunderstanding,
misinterpretation of messages, distorted messages, misinformation, confusion, mistrust, uncertainty,
frustration, embarrassments, poor and incorrect feedback, deaths, tension, and conflict. People's violence
might result in factors that obstruct efficient communication.
