Buyer Seller Meet (BSM)
for Strengthening Export Sourcing of
Small Cardamom
22"d January 2021 / 2.30 PM to 5.00 PM
Indian Spices are renowned for their rich intrinsic qualities from time immemorial. India, the largest producer,
consumer and exporter of spices in the world, produces a wide spectrum of spices across its much varied agro-
climaticconditions. Indian spices production has reached close to 10 million tonnes during 2019-20.
India's spice exports, with a volume of 11 ,83,000 MT valued at Rs.21515.40 crore during 2019-20, scaled the
landmark level of 3 billion US$ in value realization, besides recording a growth rate of 8% in volume, 10% in
rupee terms and 8% in dollar terms of value overthe previous year, despite the global pandemic situation.
Small Cardamom , is often referred as the " Queen of Spices" because of its pleasant aroma and taste. In addition
to its various culinary applications, cardamom is used as an ingredient in perfumery, health foods, medicines,
beverages etc. India is a traditional exporter of cardamom and the produce from India enjoys a premium
preference in the markets worldwide, where it is relished for its distinct intrinsic properties.
Kerala is the largest producer of Small Cardamom in the country, with the States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka
being other producers. In the recent years the small cardamom sector faced various challenges, both at the
production and export fronts, due to heavy rains and subsequent natural calamities in the growing region as
well as pesticide concerns in export shipments.
Spices Board, to address these concerns, has been supporting the small cardamom stakeholders throughout
the various stages of the supply chain. The programs I activities of the Board include assistance for area
expansion, nursery management & post harvest improvement, promoting good agricultural practices,
integrated pest management (IPM) & use of bio control agents, creating awareness through campaigns,
trainings & other programs, promoting collaborative movements amongst growers through Spice Producer
Societies (SPS), R&D support, strengthening direct linkages with exporters etc.
It is noteworthy that the export of small cardamom, amidst the various concerns & hurdles, has showed an
upward trend during the first half of 2020-21 , with a volume of 1900 MT. registering an increase of around four
times over the same period of the previous year. Though the collective efforts of stakeholders have helped the
Indian small cardamom sector to manage the challenges to some extent, further synergistic interventions are
required across the supply chain for sustainable growth of the sector.
The Board is issuing Certification of Registration as Exporter of Spices (CRES) to the
exporters of spices and auctioneer & dealer license for domestic marketing
of small cardamom. The programs for export promotion implemented by
the Board include assistance to exporters for packaging development,
reimbursement of courier charges for sending samples abroad,
assistance for brand promotion, support for product development &
research, quality evaluation services for facilitating export etc.
Also, the Board is regularly conducting Quality Improvement
Training Programmes to the farmers, FPOs, traders, exporters,
officials of state Agri I Horti Depts, members of NGOs on the
updated quality and safety requirements and good practices to be
adopted by the stakeholders.
E-Auction Centre
Spices Board introduced the e-auction system for cardamom in
2007 by replacing the manual out-cry system for ensuring
transparency and better price realization. Thee-auction acts as
platform for market linkage and primary sale of around 90% of
the Small Cardamom produced in the country, with an annual
turnover of around Rs. 4,000 crores during 2019-20 crop
season. Two full-fledged e-auction centres have been
developed at Puttady in ldukki district of Kerala - the major
production centre for Small Cardamom and at Bodinayakanur,
Tamil Nadu the largest market centre for small cardamom. The e-
auction centres have state of the art infrastructure facilities with latest
servers and networking facilities and 60 terminals for conduct of the
auction.
