Organizational System and Human Behavior

In order to understand organizational system and human behavior, it is important to know that
definitions, goals, forces, and major characteristics of organizational behavior in the work environment

I. Organizational System

Organizational System is the integrated framework of elements that portrays how behavior is
guided towards achievement of organizational goals.

A. Four Forces Affection Organizational Behavior

1.1 People
Make up the internal social system of the organization.

1.2 Structure
Defines the formal relationships and use of human resources in an organization.

1.3 Technology
The use of technology has a tremendous influence on working relationships.

1.4 Environment
All Organizations operate within an internal and an external environment

II. The Organizational Behavior and the Individual

Perceptive managers have long recognized that every manager must deal with the organization,
the individual and the larger environment. The organization and the environment must come to terms
with each other. The Organization should establish and attain objectives wanted by the environment
and the environment should support the organization that satisfies its wants. The individual’s accepting
and facilitating the attainment of the purposes of the organization and the organizations satisfying the
needs of the individuals. Maslow’s need – model will articulate this in his theory of motivation.

A. Basic Concepts of Organizational System and Human Behavior

1.1 Individual Differences


A person is a distinct individual. He is unique and different from others.

1.2 Perception

Perception is the act of faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind.
It is a single unified awareness derived from sensory processes while a stimulus is
present.
1.3 A Whole Person
When a person joins an organization, he is hired not only because of his brains but, as a
whole, person possessed with certain characteristics.

1.4 Desire for Involvement


Normally, every person wishes to feel good himself. This personal human desire is
reflected in his drive for self-efficacy.

1.5 Value of Persons


People are the most difficult to control in any type of organization; and therefore, they
deserve to be treated with extra care from other factors of production (land, capital,
and technology because they have feelings and emotions.

B. Organizations and Social Systems

Organizations are social systems for they are organized on the basis of mutual interests of
employer and worker relationship.

1.1 Social Systems


Social Systems is a complex set of human relationships interacting in many and different
ways.

1.2 Mutual Interest


Organizations exist for a social humanistic purpose.

1.3 Ethics
Ethics is a system of moral principles; the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a
particular class of human actions or a particular group.

C. Ethics in Organizational Behavior

1.1 Human Resources Approach

The Philosophy of the Human Resources Approach is developmental. This is specifically


designed and concerned with the growth and development of people in order to
achieve higher levels of competency, creativity, and fulfillment, because people are
considered the most potent variable as a resource in any organization and society.

1.2 Contingency Approach

There are a number of traditional managers that relied on principles to provide “one
best way” of managing. The correct way to organize, to plan, and to delegate, and to

divide work is applied regardless of the type of organization or condition involved since,
for them, management principles are universal.

1.2 Results-oriented Approach

All organizations whether political, social, economic or ecclesiastical, need to accomplish


desirable results.

1.3.1 Knowledge x skills = ability


1.3.2 Attitude x situation = motivation
1.3.3 Ability x motivation = Potential human performance
1.3.5 Potential performance x resources x opportunity = Organizational Results

1.4 Systems Approach

The systems approach is a type of behavioral approach in which the manager takes a
holistic perspective of the whole subject.

III. Characteristics of Organization

A. Characteristics of a Healthy Organization;

1. Objectives are so widely shared by the members and there is a strong and consistent flow of
energy toward those objectives.
2. People feel free to signal their awareness of difficulties
3. Problem-solving is highly pragmatic.
4. The judgment of people lower down in the organization is respected.
5. Collaboration is freely entered into.
6. Where there is crisis the people quickly band together in work until the crisis departs.
7. Conflicts are considered important to decision-making and personal growth.
8. There is a great deal of on-the-job learning based on a willingness to give, seek, and use
feedback and advice.
9. Joint Critique of progress routine.
10. Relationships are honest.

B. Characteristics of an Unhealthy Organization;

1. Little personal investment in organizational objectives except at top levels.


2. People in the organization see things going wrong and do nothing about it.
3. People at the top try to control as many decisions as possible.
4. Managers feel alone in trying to get things done.
5. The judgment of people lower down in the organization is not respected outside the narrow
limits of their jobs.
6. Personal needs and feelings are side issues.
7. People compete when they need to collaborate.

8. When there is a crisis, people withdraw or start blaming one another.


9. Conflict is mostly covert and managed by office politics and other games, or there are
interminable and irreconcilable arguments.
10. Learning is difficult.
