Activity 1: FACTORS THAT INFLUENCES MEAL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Module One
A. Give a scenario that shows the effect of cultural background to meal management
practices. Do you think it can affect the nutritional well-being of an individual? If your
answer is yes, how?

One of the effects of cultural background on people regarding meal management

is when the person goes to different places and encounters different cultural
practices for meal management. She/he will experience culture shock because of the
different practices.
I lived in Cavite and our family decided to vacation in Baguio. It was our first
time there because we had relatives there. So, at the beginning, I had an idea that
the people of Baguio had different cultures in all aspects, especially in meal
management practices. The time we approach the place I saw already the different
culture on there, I saw the group of people wearing traditional clothes in public area.
In the evening, I was really amazed at how they prepared the ingredients and how
they cooked their foods. I think it can affect my nutritional well-being of an
individual what mesmerizes me is the taste and the nutritional ingredients of their
foods because I saw how they prepare and the ingredients they add to meals. For
me that is the effect of different cultural background, that is called culture shock.

B. Give a scenario that shows the effect of geography to meal management. Do you think
it can affect the nutritional well-being of an individual? If your answer is yes, how?

I will connect the given scenario to the letter A. One of the effects of geography
regarding meal management is when the person goes to different places and
encounters different cultural heritage sites or places for meal management. She/he
will experience culture shock because of the different practices in that place or
geography. I think same scenario in the letter A that I will give for the letter B. I
knew that Baguio has a variety of culturally significant sites in many facets,
particularly in terms of food preparation techniques. What captivates me is the
location because of the altitude place, weather, temperature, flavor, and the
nutritional components of their dishes since I saw how they cook and add
ingredients to meals. And because of the geography, we need to eat hot soup or a
little bit spicy to give a hot feeling or warm ourselves. This can have an impact on
my personal nutritional well-being. To me, culture shock is the result of a new
geographic location.

Activity 2: RELIGION AND FOOD

Module One

The Philippines has many mixed religions. There are Catholics, Christians, Muslims, etc.
In every religion, there is a rule to be followed to show up as a devotee. According to (Dableo,
2018), the second religion in the Philippines with the most members is Islam. Islam is a
monotheistic faith that teaches that there is only one God, Allah. The main scripture of Islam is
the Quran. They recognize it as the word of God. Halal and haram are taught here. Therefore, when
we have Muslim friends, we should respect them and let's not push them into our activities that
they don't do because that might be haram to them.

Muslim food is considered the cleanest food in the country because of how they find the
ingredients, prepare and make it. Muslims are not allowed to eat pork because they believe that
pork, especially its blood, is dirty. They are not allowed to drink alcohol or beer because it is
haram. They are not allowed to eat food if they have not seen how the animal was slaughtered or
how the food was prepared. One of the things they consider is fast food restaurants because they
have halal food, but other Muslims believe that it is only used to persuade. Based on what I
watched, a female student said that when she ate at a fast food restaurant with chicken on offer,
she thought it was halal even though she didn't see how it was made. Because there is no choice
but to eat because there might still be hunger. Only a few carinderia or restaurants offer halal food
in the country. Some Islamic leaders in this country are afraid that their fellow Muslims may be
devouring bad foods because they have no choice but to eat bad foods due to the influence of the
majority. However, there are still more people who adhere to eating halal foods because their
religion places more trust in their hearts.

A. In your own words, briefly discuss the following:

1. Historical background of food

Prehistoric Times - According to what I know, individuals in this era knew how
to search for food. They learnt to fish with their stone tools and consumed root
crabs, birds, and strange eggs. And in order to live, people went from place to
place due to the changing weather and their need to obtain more food.
Ancient Times - Additionally, they have learnt how to use the stone tools they
constructed to produce a lot of food because they are already becoming more
adept at using them. Agriculture flourished in this era, allowing people to keep
a lot of food without having to travel place to place.
Middle Ages - Strong nations or organizations controlled the production of food
for the populace throughout this time. One of the causes of this is the occurrence
of wars because when an area runs out of food, they must import it from the
chosen nation, but the conflicts make this impossible. There was also a chance
to learn about the flavors that spices provide to meals at this time.

2. Factors that affects meal management practices

I claimed that meal management strategies might have a wide range of
consequences or contributing variables. The cultural background, which represents
what is believed in the culture and what is taught growing up, is a component that
alters these behaviors. Due to each person's unique viewpoints, one of its
components is also the difference between them. Because the climate of a region or
culture may alter behaviors, geography also explains why there are changes. The
last one is the economic component of a nation, where what must be purchased will
modify what must be cooked in meal management when the GDP in the economy
is low.
