01 THE IMPORTANCE
OF PRONUNCIATION
Pronunciation is IMPORTANT since successful
communication cannot take place without correct
pronunciation.
Pronunciation is NECESSARY for both comprehensible
and effective speech and for the learning of new forms
in the second language.
02
SOME COMMON MISTAKES
IN PRONUNCIATION
OF VIETNAMESE
Forget ending sounds
Have difficulty in pronouncing sounds
which do not exist in Vietnamese
1. Assimilate Vietnamese sounds
to English
Ex: /tʃ/ and ch, /ð/ and đ, /θ/ and th
2. Be not fluent in sound /l/ and /n/ => got a lisp
3. Be difficult to speak /r/ sound
Intend to give all syllables
equal stress and a “flat” intonation
Be confused with similar sounds
Use of simple vowels instead of
diphthongs, miss clusters
Add /s/ sound arbitrarily
