Question: Today, advanced science and technology have made great changes to
people’s life, but artists such as musicians, painters and writers are still highly valued.
What can arts tell us about life that science and technology cannot?

ANSWER:
It is true that although scientific breakthroughs have greatly contributed to the
advancements in everyone’s lives, artistic works are of paramount importance. One
reason behind this phenomenon is that the arts can provide individuals with a deeper
worldview and a vivid representation of our past and culture which technology fails to
deliver.

First and foremost, artists enable us to comprehend the world in another dimension,
understanding underlying ideas behind the simple facts and figures produced by
scientific research. For example, a scientific description of a cat would usually include
its physical characteristics only. By contrast, art enthusiasts would likely perceive cats
in portraits like “Woman with a cat” by Renoir as a soul mate as well as a symbol of
beauty. This is a perfect exemplification of artwork provoking creative thinking and
perception.

In addition, masterpieces have been used to delve deeper into the emotional
perspectives of culture and history. For example, top-notch VR technology can vividly
portray the good old days of Vietnamese villages. However, by studying the poem
“The Tale of Kieu” by Nguyen Du, one could appreciate the intricate details of
Vietnamese customs and habits. A plethora of war songs evoke intense feelings about
the cruelty and absurdity of the Vietnam War. Each of those songs is a combination of
an ear-catching melody and absorbing lyrics, and therefore, instills pride and pain in
listeners.

In conclusion, in comparison to technology, arts are able to provide audiences with a

unique interpretation of the world as well as cultural and historical understanding.
Therefore, I believe governments should provide more financial support and
encouragement to artists.
