CURRICULUM EVALUATION: A PROCESS AND A TOOL

 Evaluation is both a process and a tool.


 Improvement of curriculum is the result of evaluation

As a PROCESS: it follows a procedure to get to the desired results.

 Ornstein, A. & Hunkins,F, (1998): Curriculum evaluation is a process that enables one to
decide whether to accept, change, eliminate the whole curriculum of a textbook.
 Oliva, P, (1988): It is process of delineating, obtaining and providing information for
purposes of modifying, or eliminating the curriculum.

As a TOOL: it helps to judge the worth and merit, innovation or change of curriculum

 Gay, L. (1985): Evaluation is to identify the weaknesses; problems encountered in the


implementation, and strengths; effectiveness of and the returns on allocated finance for the
improvement of the curriculum development [process.
 McNeil, J. (1977): Evaluation answers the two questions:
 Do planned learning opportunities, programs, courses and activities as developed and
organized actually produce desired results?
 How can a curriculum best be improved?

4. Decision making
