Q1.a
Most of the required initiatives have been taken by Mr Shukla. Some initiatives could also
have been implemented keeping in mind future prospect. Following are the initiatives that
have been implanted by TMH:
 Mr Shulka implemented key strategy by adapting more of US textbook that resulted
in increase in number of titles in School, Test preparation and higher education.
 TMH focused on Innovation and expansion of digital domain by introducing testmate,
E book library (Engineering XPRESS), CREATE etc.
 Partnership with Infibeam helped TMH to make its product available to all the
potential customer 24/7.
 To solve the additional support requirement problem amongst educators TMH
introduced Course Smart and provided instructors guides and solution manuals.
 Streamline operation was another main initiative Mr Shukla focused on. As a result,
company reduced its paper variant and tie up with printing services company.
 Keeping in mind the Environment concern TMH adopted to Trident paper that was
made of sugarcane bassage which was environment friendly.
 Benchmarking the salary and benefits of employee was done. Recognizing and
rewarding great performers was done in form of bonus pays. 360-degree Feedback
was adopted, By Using this component of a performance management system, TMH
was able to discover staff shortcomings, areas for improvement, and strategies for
accomplishing them.
 To promote Organization growth TMH change its structure by creating 3 companies
within the company.
TMH could look for opportunity to tie up with private and government school, colleges,
Further, they could target and focus on rural market by opening outlets and providing demo
sessions. In order to capture different segments of people they could print books in several
languages.

 For the 1st initiative of publishing more titles the company had built a network of
2600 authors, 70 editors, 25 printers, 15 wholesalers 250 retailers and relationships
with over 9000 educational corporates and government institutions.
 To assist its aspirations for innovation in the digital space, the corporation had hired
capable executives from related businesses.
 The customer support project had a strong technical focus, which aided in the
development of technology solutions for businesses entering e-commerce sectors.
 It decreased the number of paper versions from 16 to 3 in order to increase
production. The business purchased its newsprint from Tamil Nadu Newsprint Papers
Ltd. And environmentally sustainable trident paper created from sugar cane bagasse.
 To build a high-performance culture and to implement 360- degree feedback the
company needs to be ready to adopt as it is difficult. They had a capable HR
department and a ready culture to adopt all the changes. Each business unit had its
publishing head, marketing head, and sales head.
 Tata Mc Graw Hill employed a large number of people; from 180 in 2005 to 300 in
2010, the company's workforce rose. The corporation employed both new executives
and freshers. The editing team doubled in size during the past three years. So, the
company had enough employees to carry out its activities as desired.

The Tata McGraw hill introduced the following measures and changes in the context of new
environment changes:
 Switching towards e-book by entering into partnership with Infibeam and launching
online bookstore
 Open access to quality, technical and managerial education.

improve competencies.

These initiates resulted in reduction in printing costs and increase in revenues, making TMH
the most profitable global publishing company in India with a 28% return on sales. So, we
can say that the initiatives taken by Mr. Shukla were aligned with opportunities and threats in
the environment.

1.d
Mr. Shukla’s initiatives were targeted at maintaining leadership position in all segments of
publishing business. Some of the initiatives and its consequences are as follows-
a) More titles- Focus on local publishing meant more editorial resources and large
number of published titles as outputs. Like more adaption of US textbooks. Expansion
of sales force for the same i.e., to market new titles. They also took up
implementation of 3rd party publisher’s content. Consequence- helping competitors’
market in one’s own country led them to a better understanding of Indian market and
then they independently opened their publication houses in India. Thus, self-inviting
competitions.
b) Innovating in digital domain- Products like testmate, new e-books library, digitally
enabled custom publishing platform- Create and online bookstores. Consequence- a
one stop solution to all your reading needs with competitive exam preparation, online
course formulation and creation and access to digital version of all books and an
online shop to buy books from. All of this added to user’s convenience and ease of
access to different contents.
c) Support for customers- Partnership with Infibeam to make products available 24/7.
The customisation services for institutes extended by TMH helps bring more content
to regional university and even manage their educational resources. The
supplementary content for homework, exam preparation, solution manuals etc. helped
instructors and students go beyond books. Consequence- Links from internet and
custom course books all helped TMH receive 97% customer satisfaction.
d) Impacting Productivity- Reducing resources like paper variants and reducing
engagement with companies providing printing services along with environment
friendly paper material like sugarcane can all contribute to the title of best publisher.
Consequence- Everyone wanted to work with TMH and utilise its state-of-the-art
warehouse office.
e) People, Practice and Process- Performance goals, incentives plan and listening to
employees helped channelize growth of company. The company was also divided into
3 sub companies- School, higher education and professional division. Consequence-
separate budget, annual plans and strategies for the next 2 years helped make each
business unit more efficient. It also encouraged new authors to write and the company
onboarded more people to reach such authors for publication and institute for
adoption.
f) Performance- reduction in printing cost with increase of available scanners and
copiers.

Q2.
Some of the options are:
1. Awareness: Now students or any instructors mostly prefer to read online in order to
get knowledge. But this is not applicable to people who are living in rural areas. So
what they can do is aware those people regarding what changes are happening and
how it will be good for them if they could get access to online platforms. Through this
Mr. Shukla to get his reach to these people also.
2. New Material: TMH Has not divulged in the courses like Hotel Management and
Law. This is a good opportunity for them to get into these courses as Hotel
Management has been one of the most prominent options for those students who
wants to pursue their carrier in this field. They can hire people from these
backgrounds and ask them to publish books and PPTs and entrance exam booklets
which could be reviewed and them send to the institutions.
3. New Field: TMH can also experiment in the field which now has become an
important part known as IELTS. It is a course which helps students who wants to go
abroad for studies or for jobs.
Q.3
Students who register for classes at the beginning of the school year should be eligible for
a special discount which will be offered by the educational institution or a coaching
facility. Additionally, the institution would gain from this. They will be to accomplish this
goal by placing adverts in newspapers or on hoardings. Because of the growth of digital
advertising, they will be able to achieve a broad range of publicity among students by
running advertisements on social media platforms. They even have the ability to obtain
personal information of students who have shown interest in enrolling in these institutions
by contacting the institutions and coaching.

 Tata McGraw Hill could organise a session at the universities and schools in
which they could give out free study materials for beginning levels of the course
and present actual demonstrations of how e-learning works. It is possible for
educators to persuade their students to use the e-learning platform as an alternative
to more conventional modes of education by drawing attention to the positive
effects that the platform has on the environment. The consultants and salespeople
from TMH could go to schools in order to conduct a seminar. This shift toward
more innovative teaching approaches will help widen student’s perspectives in a
positive manner.

 TMH could get in contact with non-profit organisations that are presently working
to improve the quality of life in rural areas to further distribute information on the
significance of literacy and the several ways in which a person may receive
knowledge. They might inquire about receiving assistance in marketing, selling,
and distributing of their printed books and digital books to the general public at
rates that are within the financial capabilities of the people living in the rural
areas.

 TMH may collect data on the school's registered students, set up an account for
each student with a free membership for at least one month, and provide those
students some rudimentary instructions on how to utilise the eLearning platform.
In addition, professionals might be designated to be on call 24 hours a day, seven
days a week to address any issues that may arise with these children. Young
people will have the freedom to study whatever and wherever they choose because
of the portability features. Moreover, I'd want to raise the point that, as we've gone
through a time of digital education, this will be the single biggest change to the
conventional method of imparting knowledge ever.
