APERTURE &
BACKGROUND BLUR
CHEAT SHEET

STEP ONE: SWITCH TO AV MODE

Move the dial on the top of your camera away from AUTO! Switch to “A’ or ”AV”
Mode,

STEP TWO: CHOOSE A LOW APERTURE NUMBER

Choose a aperture number (the F number) that is quite low. Try for around F3.2 or
smaller.

STEP THREE: POSITION YOUR SUBJECT

Position your subject a good distance away from the background -

remember the more distance between the subject and background, the more
blur your will get

STEP FOUR: POSITION YOURSELF

To get good background blur, choose a longer length lens if you have the choice.
If you are using a zoom lens, zoom “in”. This makes the background appear more
blurry.

STEP FIVE: WATCH YOUR DISTANCE

If possible, try to make sure that you are closer to your subject than your subject is
to the background -
again this maximises background blur!

STEP SIX: TAKE YOUR PICTURE!

You are ready to go! Your image should now have some good background blur
and remember you can follow these same steps at any time to get good results!
