THE COST OF A SMELL: A LITERARY ANALYSIS

This story was a bit funny and miserable at the same time since it’s an
injustice between the rich and the poor. Portray the social injustices
happening in our country, where the rich and powerful are at the top
while those who struggle with poverty are at the bottom, doomed and
treated like negligible individuals however, this story tells that when
there is a bad start there is a good ending with a twist, that convey the
importance of equality.

1. Ulam with his young wife in a nipa hut beside a rich man’s house,
the couple was poor that their daily meals consisted of boiled rice
and salt. One day, a mouth-watering smell of chicken adobo
coming from their rich neighbor’s kitchen wafted into their
window, and Ulam came up with an innovative idea and took
their plates of steaming rice outside, and sat on a bamboo bench,
held their plates high and let the smoke from the adobo mix with
their rice so that the rice become flavorful. It went on for a week
until the rich learned about what his neighbors were doing. He
confronted ulam and insisted that the latter pay for the smoke
from his adobo. And ulam said he owed him nothing, the
neighbors joined the commotion and insisted that they need to go
to the village magistrate and settle it. In the courtroom, the old
judge listened to both sides, clear his throat.
