WO PHS ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE 1.0 Pre-Alignment V4 1.2 1.3 Carefully examine all optical surfaces of the PHS for dust, fingerprints, or optical damage. The optics must be perfectly clean, or they may suffer damage at high energy. if any dust specks or fingerprints are observed, remove the optic and clean it by first blowing it off with nitrogen or a squeeze ball, and then performing a drag wipe using lense tissue and methanol. Before attatching the PHS to the DCR, adjust the feet of the DCR so that the beam is level with the table. If using a large laboratory table, it is usually also helpful to position the DCR so that the beam is parallel to the edge of the table. Using a jack stand to support it, place the PHS into position and insert the three screws attatching it to the DCR. Tighten down the screws leaving them loose enough to allow translation. Adjust the position of the PHS so that its input opening is centered on the BGR beam and it is level with the table. The vertical_centering of the input hole_on the beam is very critical, Tighten down the lock screws. emer. Place both 1/4 wave rotators in the down position, and move both exit prisms into their parking position. Set up the HG to produce the desired output beams with ™. horizontal polarization. Level all of the prisms using the vertical tilt adjustment screws on each prism mount. Sao The PHS can be set up to output the beams in many different ways. The most common setup, however, is with one of the harmonics exiting through right angle prism #2 and the fundamental exiting througth right angle prism #1. Sections 2-5 give a detailed description of the alignment procedure for 532mm and 1.06y outputs. The procedure for other setups is similar and any major differences are discussed in sections 6 and 7. 2.0 Adjust the Dispersion Prism. Trrcvrse varies, "Tissier Seren *Note: During all adjustments Of asic, the 1.064 and 532nm beams, the ‘Sew DCR should be in longpulse mode (Q-switch off) and at low power {oscillator only at 30-40 LJ). Retighten the transiation lock screws. 2.2 Place a white card over the input opening of the PHS so that the bottom edge of the card is resting on the bottom of the PHS. Draw a mark on the card at the center of the beam. This card wilt be used as a reference to set the height of the beams throughout the rest of the alignment. 2.3 Using the vertical tilt adjustment screws, on the dispersion prism mount, make small adjustments, alternating between the two screws, until the 532nm beam height matches the reference card near the dispersion prism and near the roof prism. Try to keep the dispersion prism fairly ‘evel while doing so. The beam should be roughly veritcally centered on the roof prism when done. 2.4 Using the dispersion prism angle adjustment screw, horizontally center the 532nm beam on the second harmonic1/4 wave rotator. 3.0 Adjust the Roof Prism Fitaajoetnent Serew ‘ransatan Lace See -segeasie vers SiR abate Seren “junit Sere ‘Root Prism agjustments 3.1 Loosen the roof prism translation lock screws and translate the prism so that as the 1.06: beam enters the prism, its left edge is 5-10mm from the left edge of the prism. 3.2 3.3 3.4 Using the roof prism vertical tilt adjustment ene roughly Yevel the prism mount. Adjust the beam height with the vertical tilt adjustment screws until the 532nm beam matches the reference card height at points near the roof prism and near the beam dump. The angle adjustment of the roof prism is the most critical adjustment in the alignment of the PHS because it controls where the back reflections off of the roof prism will land. There are two 1.062 back reflections and two 532nm back reflections. Each beam reflects once when it enters the roof prism and once when it exits the prism. If it directly retro-reflects back into the DCR, many problems may result and: severe optical damage may occur. (See section 8 for a complete description of the damage that may occur due to this back reflection.) ‘220m cute +64 ox 3.5 Remove the doubling crystal in the HG from the beam path. Adjust the roof prism angle until the two 1.06. back reflections are in the positions shown in the 1.064 back reflection diagr: making Sure that the front surface reflection is not retro-reflecting. Using the IR card, verify that there is total internal reflection in the roof prism. If any spots of 1.062 can be seen behind the roof prism, adjust the prism angle just enough to make them disappear, while making sure that the front surface reflection is still in an acceptable position. 3.6 Move the doubling crystal back into the beam path and check the position of the 532nm back reflections, One should land on the dispersion prism just to the right af the sharp corner nearest the roof prism, and the other should pass just to the left of the dispersion prism. (See diagram on previous page.) 3.7 Check, one more time, that all of the back reflections are correctly positioned, especially the front surface 1.06 back reflection, and that total internal reflection is occurring in the roof prism. Also check that no back reflection induced lasing (as described in section 8) is occuring. If everything seems okay, go to section 4. |f it seems impossible to properly set up the PHS This is not ideal, since the beams will no longer all be level with the bottom of the PHS, but it should prevent the back reflections from causing any damage. 4.0 Adjust Exit Prism #2. {xtt Priam agjustmente 4.1 Turn the exit prism #2 translation adjustment knob to move the prism into the 532nm beam path. Make slight adjustments with the knob to center the 532nm output beam horizontally in the output hole. 4.2 Use the prism angle adjustment screw to make the green output beam from the PHS parallel with the edge of the table. Recheck the centering of the beam in the output hole and if necessary, use the translation adjustment knob to recenter the beam. 4.3 Use the exit prism transverse vertical tilt adjustment screw to adjust the back reflection off of the prism to be at the same height as the beam incident on the prism. 4.4 Use the exit prism longitudinal vertical tilt adjustment screw to make the output beam level with the table. 4.5 Follow the back reflection off of the prism to make sure that it lands. safely on the wall of the PHS and does not retro-reflect. 5.0 Adjust Exit Prism #1 5.1 Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.4 using the 1.064 beam and exit prism #1. 5.2 Follow the back reflection off of the prism. {t should land on the back wall of the PHS to the right of the roof prism. 6.0 Optional: Alignment Procedure for 38Snm Output. 6.1 Set up the HG to produce horizontally polarized third harmonic. 6.2 With the DCR set for longpulse mode, align the 532nm beam through the PHS as in steps 2 and 3. 6.3 To generate third harmonic, the DCR must be in Q-switched mode. Turn the Q-switch contro! to the "normal" position and then Adjust the angle of the dispersion prism until the 355nm beam is centered horizontally on its 1/4 wave rotator. 6.4 Recheck the position of all back reflections. None should be retroreflecting. 6.5 Check to make sure that the 1.061 beam is not clipping on the left side of the roof prism. If so, translate the roof prism to the ‘eft enough to eliminate the clipping and go back to step 6.3. 6.6 Translate exit prism #2 into the 355nm beam path and make adjustments to the prism as in step 4. 6.7 Da step 5. 7.0 Optional: Alignment Procedure for 266nm Output. 7.1 Install the Fourth Harmonic kit. The kit contains a crystal quartz dispersion prism, a small crystal quartz roof prism, and a crystal quartz exit prism. 7.2 Align the 532nm beam as in steps 2 and 3. 7.3 Set up the HG for fourth harmonic generation and adjust the crystals. The DCR must be in Q-switched mode. 7.4 Translate the fourth harmonic roof prism into the path of the 266nm beam until the transmitted beam is centered on the plug to the left of the beam dump. 7.5 Check that all back reflections are in safe positions. 7.6 Translate the fourth harmonic exit prism into place and make adjustments as in step 4 to correctly position the 266nm output beam. 7.7 Do step 5. Dangers of Direct Retro-reflection of the 1.061 Beam off of the Front Surface of the PHS Roof Prism. 8.1 If retro-reflection is occurring, a “laser cavity” is formed between the output coupler of the DCR and the front surface of the roof prism. When the DCR amplifier is turned on, there is gain in the cavity and oscillation occurs between. these two surfaces. This lasing can be observed by turning the DCR oscillator off and turning the amplifier all of the way up. Place an IR card in the PHS in a position to view the output from the roof prism. A smail spot of 1.06, will be seen on the card. If the card is placed between the roof prism and the dispersion and the dispersion prism, the spot disappears because the “cavity” has been broken. This unwanted lasing is even strong enough to produce 532nm if the doubling crystal is in place. it is believed that this lasing is responsible for a frequent occurence of drilling in the roof prism. Because of this retro-reflection induced lasing, it is not a good idea to adjust the roof prism angle soley by using a power meter to find the point of maximum power transmission. Always make sure that the front surface 1,061 back reflection is off axis and that no unwanted lasing is occurring.
