What is

in SAP
@gaganmohansingh
Collective Term
The term Z is a collective
term used for
transactions, function
modules and programs.
These are programs
developed in-house as an
addition to the standard
SAP programs.
Starting Letters
Packages with starting
letters A to S and U to X are
reserved for SAP standard
applications. Customer-
specific applications can be
created with the initial
letters Z or Y known as Z
developments
ABAP
Developers can create,
modify or extend SAP
applications already
written in ABAP. These
are called Z
Developments.
Own Requirements
The Z programs are a way
of mapping Customer
Specific Requirements
not fulfilled in SAP with
standard solutions and
code.
Modify Standard
Companies can modify
the original programs. To
do this, developers make
changes to the standard
SAP written code. These
are referred to as
modifications.
Adapt SAP
Z Programs are written to
Optimally adapt SAP to
the company's own
needs or to simplify
company specific
processes.
Beyond Standard
These Code add-ons map
individual processes of
companies and offer
solutions that go beyond
the standard.
Enhance SAP Code
The SAP enhancement
concept allows
Companies to insert their
own code as
enhancements at points
left in the source code
specified by SAP.
Effects of Z
Maintenance and service
costs increase if a lot of Z
Developments are
added. The
responsiveness of IT
team also decreases as
they need to support all
Z developments.
Upgrades & Z
With Z or Y companies
need to check and ensure
that their Z solutions or
Developments continue
to function with every
upgrade of SAP.
Copied to Make
Generally Z programs are
copied from standard
programs and then the
required changes are
made to these
programs.
Z Increase
Z programs swell over
the years - this leads to
an progressively complex
IT architecture over the
years.
Originate from
During Implementation
when consultants go for
AS IS and TO BE analysis
GAPS are finalized.
These GAPS are then
filled with Z
Developments.
