Background of the study.

One of the main problems that a student can face is poverty. It is one of the major
problems that can make a student struggle. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, it
was estimated that 23.7 percent of Filipinos in the First Semester of 2021 are poor, indicating
they cannot meet their basic food and non-food needs on their current per capita income
(Philippine Statistics Authority, 2021). Thus, the aim of this study is to understand why and how
does poverty affect the senior high students of PHINMA University of Pangasinan.

We believe that being under poverty can put pressure on someone’s mind, especially
students that are pursuing their goals, and can cause stress, anxiety, or even depression. They
may also lack access to health care, food and housing security, be homeless and, unfortunately,
not reach their full potential, which can greatly affect their academic performance. We are also
interested in understanding what challenges they face in poverty, how they cope with this
struggle, and what motivates them to continue learning.
