Abstract

This study refers to the lived experiences of Senior High School students that stopped studying
due to poverty before the pandemic started. The aim of the study is to bring the knowledge and
right values and to learn when they are facing poverty situations. Also, how do poverty students
encounter challenges that will change their life. This study refers to the undergraduate senior high
school student who fell into poverty before the pandemic started. We already know that poverty is
a serious and still an unsolved problem in the world. The poverty of the students has a lot of
struggle in their everyday life. The researchers used qualitative research and the
phenomenological research design in conducting the study of the lived experiences of the Senior
High School Student stop due to the Poverty Situation before Covid-19 started. To identify the
theme we used the Thematic Analysis, the result showed that of the five respondents we have 3
boys and 2 girls which have all stopped studying due to poverty and to identify and analyze their
life and also coping mechanisms of their experiences that they faced. Conclusion they stopped
studying because of the hardships of life, their family can no longer afford to educate them.
Others have chosen to stop studying at school to help their families. Worked early for their family,
even though it was hard for them. They manage to cope up their problems by trusting God. The
students think that he has a better plan for them.

1.0 Introduction

We already know that poverty is a serious and still an unsolved problem in the world. Due to so
many causes of poverty, one of the problems that the world's facing is poverty affecting the
education of students with poor living conditions. It gives a negative academic and social impact
on students that causes them to stop studying. The problem of poverty such as education wherein
students raised in poverty are more likely to face emotional and social challenges, mental health
issues, hunger, unemployment and difficulties in their daily lives. Poverty is the biggest problem
in the world. A lot of people are experiencing poverty. Due to poverty a lot of students had their
learning affected. The children who live in poverty have a lot of social challenges. It can cause
the students lower academic achievement. The poverty of the students has a lot of struggle in their
everyday life. The negative impact of poverty to the students such as insecurity, lack of job etc. It
can also affect the mental illness of the students such as depression, stress, anxiety, the behavior
of the students in the school etc. The Philippines has relatively high poverty so many students
lose their appetite for education and due to poverty more children are out of school and out of
focus due to non-monitoring by parents or guardians impacting poverty on students such as
insecurity, unemployment etc. It can also affect the mental illness of the students. Olivia Giovetti
(August, 2020)

Data on trends show that more than 20% of school children are in poor families and an estimated
1.1 million high school members who graduate from class do not get a diploma because of the
economic and social state in which they stand. Economic and social status will lead to poverty or
comfort of life. In the current system it is not secure for everyone because there are those who are
accused of poverty so it will not progress if everyone’s condition is not good. Russell, Rumberger
(2013)

As a result of poverty, the future of students is bleak. There is a high chance that they will not get
a good job and a bad salary which can also affect their health. In addition, they may commit
crimes or rely on public assistance. But if there is an opportunity to come to improve the situation
in the future it will be the way to make life easier. Emma, Garcia (2017)

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 7

In every challenge of life, poverty is the greatest test that pushes students to drop out of school.
Those students born in poverty are less prepared or not prepared at all for the school, this practice
represents a failure. More than a million students have dropped out of school due to lack of
money so they can no longer afford it. Poverty is the main cause of students who stopped
studying because it reduces their schooling achievement and keeps them from making money
causing them to remain in poverty. The students who are underprivileged and come from poor
families tend to drop out of school. It also affects their behavior and also the health of students.
The government is also another reason why many students are left behind to study because they
do not provide enough foundation to cope with it that even hard life does not necessarily lead to
dropping out of school.

The purpose of the study is to determine lived experiences of Senior High School students that
stopped studying due to poverty before the pandemic started. The researchers need to understand
the life situation of undergraduate students in poverty and how they experience the struggle of
their journey being an undergraduate student. The aim of the study is to bring the knowledge and
right values and to learn when they are facing poverty situations. Also, how do poverty students
encounter challenges that will change their life. This study refers to the undergraduate senior high
school student who fell into poverty before the pandemic started.

1.1 Statement of the Problem:

1) What are the lived experiences of Senior High School under poverty from Caloocan City?
2) What are the reasons behind the discontinuation of a student's education?
3) What are the effects of being an undergraduate student due to poverty?
4) How does the undergraduate student cope with their situation?

1.2 Significance of the study

Students
They will be able to know what their lives situation and it cause them to stopped studying
children can be affected in the poverty situation

Parents

The data given will provide the parents with information on how parents are having a hard time
earning money for their children's tuition fees.

Families
The group that will lose their closeness to each other because of jobs due to poverty, will have
a big problem with their child's education and the whole family's situation. So, for them to know
the negative effects that can happen.

Researchers
The researchers are one of the benefactors of this study. They give us knowledge to identify
certain issues that help researchers to gain knowledge about the life of poverty students.

Future Researchers
The information that will help them from this research is that they will understand how poverty
affects students and their studying. Also because they have a background about it.

1.3 Scope and Delimitation:

The scope of the study focuses on the way of life of the undergraduate Senior high students. The
study also shows the factors why those students should stop their study including the hindrances,
the lack of resources, and other factors that will be discussed.

The delimitation of the study are the following: five senior high school students who live in 166
Kaybiga, North Caloocan City. The researchers conduct Qualitative research to describe the
experiences of the senior high school students who experience poverty situations. This study is
conducted with financial resources and time. This research paper is only before the end of the
semester. The researcher's questionnaire will not affect the persona of our interview students. The
limitation of the study is the senior high school students stop their school due to the poverty
situations.

2.0 Review Related Literature

2.0.1 The education affects the poverty of the students.

According to Jennifer Freeman,Brandi Simonsen (2014) about the effect of poverty, there
are several concerns circulating about students who have stopped attending school and are no
longer able to study because of poverty. Poverty becomes an impediment to their education; even
though they desperately need to succeed academically, they have no choice but to stop learning
because academic and social success are extremely difficult for students growing up in poverty.
Since poor students feel that they're losing hope, they think they're not in control of their lives
when they choose to give up their studies. Students who have experienced poverty as a child are
more likely to develop externalizing disorders. This is due to disruptions in the emotion
regulatory system as a result of chronic and acute stressors common in poverty situations. It
represents the experience of students who dropped out of school due to financial hardship. We all
know that education leads to success and a promising future, but due to financial constraints, the
study was halted because it could no longer be afforded. The causes and factors of learning
cessation can be divided into two categories: personal and institutional, most of which are caused
by cessation of learning. Students would be offered a way to learn if they provide the foundation
that it will be free for all students who have stopped schooling. It will not be an obstacle for
students to stop schooling if the economic status is good for everyone.

This study is focused on the effects of poverty in the students. Poverty affects students'
academic performance in many ways. According to the National Association of Secondary
School of Principals(2021), the students become more stressed and have a negative impact on
students ability to succeed in school due to various factors symptoms poverty like health issues
temming, from non nutritional diet, homelessness, lack of food, or the inability to receive medical
treatment. There is a high possibility that students will suffer from depression because there is no
one to support their everyday lives, especially their school needs. Poverty also has a positive
impact on students because they may believe that they need to work harder in order to graduate
and have a decent life for their family and needs. There are some students who never give up no
matter how hard life is. They are also figuring out how to meet their own needs so that they can
finish their studies and be able to work.

2.0.2 The students who lack financial stability.

According to Kelly Taylor ( 2017), lack of financial resources is a serious problem to be
faced and it may take a long time to sustain education due to the hardships of life. A student who
does not graduate has limitations. It will be difficult for the student to access their health care
because they cannot continue their education and the income is not enough so it will lead to poor
health. Education is what gives life a good future but in poverty many students lead to stop
studying. It has a negative academic and social impact on students that it cause to them to stop
studying, instead of that education will lift them out of poverty, will easy to find good jobs when
needed, opportunities are waiting and high salary in every job that is open to hiring someone, still
other students have no choice but to stop because they need to help early their family, to have
daily expenses, food, and house bills. Even though life is hard as long as there are strategies and
perseverance it can withstand the challenges of life.Having a low salary can also have a variant
stresses such as nourishment, fuel poverty, obligation, dispossession, and confined social
openings-influencing family connections, hurting parents' physical and mental health, and
contributing to feelings of shame, confinement and prohibition for the entire family. Lack of
finances is one of the reasons why students stop studying. They also took into what had already
been discovered that these two variables exist and it truly influences them.

Students who stopped studying will be life threatening because they have not
experienced the comfort of life. It is impossible for the economy to grow if the situation has many
problems in the future including the problem of education. The “Sustainable Development Goal”
is a goal to ensure free equal quality, elementary and secondary education for all students until
2030. The government and society are also required to fulfill their promises through money and
human resources to ensure good quality and never experience poverty again.Because there are
many aspiring students of good life and have a comfortable future. The future should be good so
long as there is a reason to do it and strive so that the life situation of the students will be good
Saavedra, (2019).

2.0.3 The development of the undergraduate student.

According to Dim Lacour, Laura D. Tissington(2011), the students are at higher risk
for behavioral issues, sadness, peer struggle, and loss of self-confidence . The students living in
poverty are exposed to dangers. The financial and social results for those who have stopped
schooling have to have proceeded. Those who don't graduate may be incapable of fulfilling their

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 11

academic performance, additionally need information due to not being able to afford to learn or in
other words poverty. In this circumstance, it is essential and gives a great arrangement, so as not
to lead the understudies into a terrible situation. Education will have been the light for everyone
on the off chance that they have been given a reason, and they can advance their education so that
their lives will be effective within the future.

Poverty and its impacts upon student behavior and scholastic execution. It affects
student's learning and as a result, they will lose interest in considering which leads to their
wanting to stop thinking about. "Close to 30% of the population of children are living below the
poverty level. (Wight, Chau, & Aratani, 2010). The poverty-related stress students experience can
lead to truancy and deviant
behavior. The aspects of poverty may also contribute to students' experiencing poorer outcomes
Lacour & Tissington, (2011)"

As reported by Victor E Dike (2017), poverty affects brain development in students and
that the implications for learning persuades the attention that the issue has attracted today. The
studies in the fields of cognitive neuroscience, educational neuroscience, and developmental
psychology shows that the living in poverty may virtually change by how their brain grows and
develops and may have signs for learning through adulthood and professional opportunities. This
research argues that living in poverty may put students at health risks and behavioral problems in
the classroom as it upsets brain development. The study will analyze the areas of the brain
affected by poverty, the implications of learning, applying the possible teacher ways through
knowledge of the brain in the classroom to promote the challenges faced by students living in
poverty. In accordance with this, the students that implicate poverty should be aware about the
development of their brains because it can affect their daily life if their brain was affected due to
the cause of poverty. The health risk of those students will increase as they don't practice to
develop and grow their brains.

2.0.4 The increasing number of undergraduate students

According to Ogadimma C Arisukwu(2013), the increase in the number of
undergraduate adequate hostel accommodation led to cohabitation among undergraduate students
in some public universities. The study adopted rational choice theory to undergraduate students.
Full time undergraduate students constituted the study population. The study utilized both

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 12

quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. Quite common and was
caused mainly by lack of accommodation, problems with roommates, lack of privacy and the
need to be close and intimate with one's lover. As claimed with this theory, the number of
students that stopped studying increases and it leads to cohabitation among undergraduate
students. The permanent undergraduate student organized the study population. As of the study,
the increasing number of undergraduate students should stop before it ends up in a critical
situation.

According to Mignonne Breier (2010 the role of financial considerations in higher education
student dropout is being recognized increasingly, the dominant international literature fails to
reflect the extent of socio-economic deprivation among students in countries where many people
live below the poverty datum line. This article draws on a study of student retention and graduate
destination at seven Higher education institutions. focusing on the University which caters for a
large proportion of impoverished students. The study found many students left before completing
a qualification because they were too poor to stay. According to this study the apparent reason
why many students stopped studying is because of finances, and most students are in countries
where many people live below the poverty datum line. The study also found that many students
that before they stopped studying they had passed a qualification and the reason why they stopped
was because they were too poor to stay.

2.0.5 The Learning Center

According to Tess Ridge (2009), poverty is a highly stigmatised social position and the
experience of poverty in an affluent society can be particularly isolating and socially damaging.
This focuses on the emerging effects to the highschool understudies between these two
components which are the Financial status and Learning disabilities that have the potential to
change your thinking about your learning and in fact gene expression. Those student living in
poverty can also experiences including things like physical abuse, emotional abuse, and also
parental mental illness.

They have proven that Learning disabilities have an huge impact on high school students but
they still consider indeed although they encounter these two factors. Then considered on how it
was successful the ways they did for understudies encountering poverty and learning
disabilities.Poverty and financial disparities moreover impact a student's school status and

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 13

academic performance. Usually critical, as destitute families are endlessly overrepresented within
the population served by child security Kim & Drake, (2018).

2.0.6 Education is the pathway to get out of poverty.

According to Maria Cuca (2013) the only way to escape poverty is focused on
education. We all know that poverty will remain in our societies. It is our life to live. Education is
very important to the student, especially to all of the people around the world. Education is the
bright future to reach the goals of everyone. The college degree has completed the study and has a
better future (even if there are turns in their life to stop studying) than those of the student who
stopped studying with a high school diploma or early graduation. We believe that a trust case can
too be made at the crossing point of education and poverty for at least five categories. This
instruction may be an expressed need; education shows what works; innovation connects us, and
strength can catch up; many see poverty as unfaithful, and commitments of youthful individuals
are motivating.

According to Mohammed V University of Rabat (2013), Education is the most effective

way to get out not only in poverty but also to kill illiteracy, ignorance and awareness individual
rights and responsibilities and all forms of social discrimination. Education helps to get into
politics and be a part of it to learn how to defend and protect the rights of citizens who are
marginalized, disregarded and unnoticed from the taker of the decision makers. Students become
open -minded if there is education, discrimination or racism can be avoided because students
become aware of sensitive topics. Education can teach students to understand equality and to
know their rights. To understand both how they should be treated and how they should treat
others. Teaching students will help them to apply what they have learned not only in the
classroom but also in public places. They will have an idea of how they will approach the people
they meet. Through education students acquire manners.

According to Olivia Giovitte (2020), Education is referred to as an equalizer: It opens

the door to all the jobs, resources and skills that the family needs not only to survive but to
thrive. The more there is education, the more likely your family will get out of poverty. You will
have the capability to get your family out of poverty if you will have a stable high -paying job.
Students without education can still find work but their income is low. Their family's needs will
not be enough if the income is low. Education has many opportunities when it comes to work. It

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 14

will be easier to get a job if you graduate. It will not be difficult to raise wages and get the family
out of poverty if you have a stable job. Education will make the lives of students better. Poverty
always remains in our societies. However, if many are educated in our societies poverty will be
lessened. “Knowledge is virtue. Educated people are more moral. They better understand the
limits of each human, and how to work within those limits".

2.1 Theoretical Framework

2.1.1 Human Capital Theory

This study is based on the Human Capital theory of Becker(2002) which explains both
individuals' decisions to invest in human capital and the pattern of individuals' lifetime earnings.
In addition, the extent that poverty follows earnings might predict a similar relationship between
age and poverty as stated by Belle and Ellwood(1986). It simply states that investing at a young
age will prevent people from being included in poverty.

The human capital theory is the theory of earnings that is one of the determinants of poverty.
Human capital is the stock of habits, knowledge, social and personality attributes embodied in the
ability to perform labour so as to produce economic value. Human capital is unique and differs
from any other capital. It is needed by companies to achieve goals, develop and remain
innovative.

2.1.2 Social-structural Strain Theory

Strain Theory proposes that the pressure derived from social factors, such as lack of income
or lack of quality education, drives individuals to commit crime. Strain theory was developed by
sociologist Robert Merton, posits that when people are prevented from achieving culturally
approved goals through institutional means, they experience strain or frustration that can lead to
deviance.

Strain theory explains deviant behavior as an inevitable outcome of the distress individuals
experience when they're deprived of ways to achieve culturally valued goals. one of tge example
of it was the Western society places value on economic success, even though wealth is accessible
to just a small percentage of people.

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 16

3.0 Methodology

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 17

3.1 Research Design

The researchers used qualitative research and the phenomenological research design in
conducting the study of the lived experiences of the Senior High School Student stop due to the
Poverty Situation before Covid-19 started. As I suggest Qualitative research Silverman (2018) the
qualitative research is the second analyst that has a detailed context that the primary resource is
the primary researchers. Qualitative research is the repurposing and re-analysing by conducting
the research that gives us the knowledge to learn. According to Saive (2020) Phenomenological
Research Design it represents the lived experiences of the human that exist in their lives. The
researchers used Qualitative research and the Phenomenological research design to determine the
lived experiences of the student who lived in the poverty situation.

3.2 Research Locale

This research was conducted in the City of 166 Kaybiga, North Caloocan City because some of
the people are undergraduate students because of the poverty situation. According to the census in
2015, 166 Caybiga, North Caloocan City has 17,806 population, while in Caloocan City
57,470,097. The researchers choose 166 Kaybiga, North Caloocan City, since the researchers are
many well -known undergraduate students in 166 Kaybiga, North Caloocan City of poverty
situations.

3.3 Population and Sampling

The study utilized Non-probability and sampling design, specifically the Purposive sampling
technique. A complete collection of elements (persons or objects) that share a common
characteristic defined by the sampling criteria established by the researcher. According to MP
Couper, Non-probability sampling is a sampling technique in which the researcher selects
samples based on his or her subjective opinion.

The researchers used Non-probability Sampling design with the reason that their subjects were
chosen by their judgement. Purposive Sampling technique was chosen because they have certain
characteristics on subjects needed in the study. The criteria of the study are as follows; the

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

undergraduate Senior High School students due to poverty situations. THis is the outside of the
Our Lady of Fatima Universities .They reside in Kaybiga Caloocan City and should be A Senior
High School Students studying at the Caloocan residents..

3.4 Research ethics

As Jennifer M. Barrow said; Grace D. Brannan; Paras B. Khandhar (2020), in order to ensure that
participants have an autonomous right to self -determination, researchers should ensure that
potential participants understand that they have the right to decide whether or not to participate in
these studies. The researchers assisting in research studies will not in any way affect their
confidentiality with current or in future regarding the study conducted. And also the participants
have self-sufficiency. Researchers should also inform participants that they can stop
participating in the study at any time so that they become more comfortable with their
determination. According to Turnitin Organization (2017).The goal of this study is to help
facilities, researchers, and the general public understand and appreciate research ethics. This is a
discussion of the history of unethical research in many fields, followed by a discussion of projects
with researchers and the people being studied. Plagiarism is defined as the act of copying and
claiming to be the author of someone else's work. An academic writing which refers to the use of
words, ideas, or information from a source without properly citing it, pasting information from
other studies and publications, as well as taking credit for the work of others. Citation is the way
the reader tells that the research came from the other source of the research. Also stated by
Cassandra J. Smith, (2012). The purpose of citing serves three purposes: it provides correct
acknowledgment to the author whose ideas you used in your work, To avoid plagiarism, it’s
important to keep track of your sources and cite them correctly. It supports researchers in properly
referencing publications in APA 6th format to avoid plagiarism and causes problems that can
have consequences for students and researchers.

The study examined the moral development that has to be made and how such committees'
functions might be enhanced. Researchers must establish and carry out a task that involves
evaluating study proposals with a focus on benefit relationships, equity and distribution of
benefits and burdens, adequacy of information provided to subjects, and freedom protection
(M.V. Dougherty 2017). Our research also attempts to promote reality and comprehension
because research frequently necessitates a great deal of collaboration and effort among a diverse

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 19

group of people. Ethical principles promote qualities such as trust, responsibility, mutual respect,
and fairness, all of which are essential in collaborative work

3.5 Research Instruments

3.5.1 Interview Questionnaire

The research instrument of this study is based on the research problem. This Interview
Questionnaire was divided into 2 parts. The first part is used to know the information of the
respondent's profile that includes age, gender, and economic status. While the second part
includes the difficulties and struggles encountered by the senior high students in poverty and
their reasons why they choose to stop studying.

3.5.2 Screening tool

A screening tool is a test or questionnaire used by practitioners to evaluate development
deficiencies in children, such as nurses, teachers, skilled professionals, and medical professionals.
Screening methods do not provide definitive proof of developmental delays or lead to a diagnosis.
Medina, E. (2020)

3.5.3 Informed Consent

Informed consent is important due to the fact that it provides participants with
sufficiently detailed information on the study so that they will know the information about it.The
researcher must have informed consent in the knowledge of the possible consequences.

3.5.4 Pens and Paper

This is used to take down notes of all information that the respondents will answer in
case that it becomes forgotten by the researchers. According to a study of European and Asian
university students, books and handwriting notes help students remember knowledge better than
computers. (Thesaurus, R. 2019)

3.5.5 Record
The obvious advantage of audio-recording is that it relieves the researcher of the
responsibility of taking notes, allowing them to concentrate on the task at hand. (Bloor, Wood,

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 20

2006.) The researchers concentrate on poverty students who avoid learning and the researchers
need to know how they cope with their problems.

3.5.6 Online Interview Medium

The interviews are usually used in the face to face conversation with a purpose. Since
we all know that we are in the middle of a pandemic , The researchers can't interview face to face
because of the safety protocols and rules to be followed by the government. The researchers
conduct interviews online; they can use phones, tablets, computers, laptops and other more. The
researchers can interview the respondent by google form to answer the question and google meet
and zoom etc. to interview the respondent. The respondent will be able to click the link given by
the researchers.

3.6 Data collection

According to Pritha Bhandari (June 5,2020), data collection is a systematic process of gathering
observations. The initiation processes are as follows: First, it is necessary to seek approval from
the research adviser for the research topic before conducting the study. Second, just choose who is
really interested in interviewing. Third, when finishing selecting the respondents, next you will
apply the questionnaire to them and do it through the online interview. Fourth, it will record their
answers and get only the important data .Fifth the researchers gathered the data from the Senior
High School Students that Stop at Their Study due to Poverty Before Pandemic. In creating the
data we need to do the analysis.

3.7 Data Analysis

The information gathered was analyzed using the thematic analysis that is qualitative for
identifying data trends. Thematic analysis, according to Norris,Nowell and White (2017) is
method for identifying, arranging, evaluating, representing and detailing themes contain with a
data collection. Its a method for locating subject inside the a data set.For those speaking the
dialects of qualitative and quantitative research analysts who use different approaches, thematic
analysis may serve as an interpreter Braun & Clarke (2006). Since they represented the
perspective of a Senior High School Student who stopped studying due to poverty before the
Pandemic, the researchers used the Thematic Analysis.

4.0 Results

4.1 Introduction

This chapter represents the research findings of data collected from the case study samples. The
main source of data is online interviews and surveys. The findings presented in relation to the
research objective stated in the study. The method that was used to analyse the data was discussed
in the methodology chapter.

4.1.1 The Lived Experience of Senior High School due to socioeconomic status.

4.1.1.1 : Problem that is difficult to solve.

According to Prachi, Dave (2019) In our lives, we all experience difficulties. Everyone
has their own way of dealing with problems in their daily lives. Some people prefer to listen to
the advice of others who have more expertise. Others may ponder for a long period before making
a decision. Some people prefer to seek assistance from the Internet because they believe it is a
more credible source of information for their concerns. As a student it is difficult to face your
problem when in fact your family is the one who causes a problem. We can't avoid it, because
students are affected instead they're studying, they neglect it. They also think the problem is that
only parents should know.

The researcher asked the respondent about what are your experiences about your socioeconomic
status? Respondent 1… (Studies and work.) …. Respondent 2… (suffering.) … Respondent 3….
(“Pagsubok.) ...Respondent 4… (Mahirap ang buhay namin..dahil pareho magulang ko may bisyo
sa alak.) ….Respondent 5… (Mahirap talaga ang buhay.)

The respondents were dealing with a problem that is difficult to solve. That's why they
stopped studying. The researchers found out that the respondents are dealing with a problem that
is difficult to solve. One of those is, life is really hard. Because of the hardships of life, there are
misunderstandings in the family and they end up fighting. One of the reasons why they stopped
studying is because of a problem that is difficult to solve.

4.1.1.2 Lack of Money

Even though life is hard as long as there are strategies and
perseverance it can withstand the challenges of life.

The researcher asked the respondent about “What are the struggles you faced with your
family situation?” Respondent 1… (Money.) ...Respondent 2…(Lack of Money.)...Respondent
3…. (Pagtatalo at hindi pagkakaintindihan.) …. Respondent 4…(Pera.) …. Repondent 5….
(Financial Unstable)

The respondents dealing with lack of money why they stopped studying. The researcher
found out that most of the respondents are dealing with lack of money, one of the struggles that
they face with their family. One of the struggles they face in their family is poverty. Poverty
causes them to stop studying.

4.2.1 The reasons behind the discontinuation of a student's education.

4.2.1.1 Family Desire.

According to Oma (2020), The items that a family (or an individual) cannot live without
are known as family necessities. They are critical to the family's physical, emotional, and social
well-being. Enough money for the daily needs of the family. It does not pay attention to the needs
of the student because there is not enough money to pay for school projects. The needs of the
family are also important. So some students decided to work just to help their families. There are
also others who are forced to work because there is not enough food on a daily basis, to help them

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 23

look for a sideline job to supplement the family's needs. They pay more attention to it in order to
live day to day. Sometimes they no longer think about education. The only important thing for
them is to be able to eat and survive in their daily lives.

The researcher asked the respondent about “What are the reasons why you need to stop
studying?” Respondent 1… (Poverty.) …. Respondent 2…. (Help my family) ….Respondent
3…. (Work.) ….Respondent 4 (Pera, trabaho, pangangailangan ng aking pamilya) …..Respondent
5…. (Pursue ang negosyo )

The respondents are dealing with the family desire because this is the reason why they need
to stop studying because they need to work for the income, daily needs, and pursue their business
even though they are stop studying. The researchers found out that the participants are dealing
with the family desire because they help them for the daily needs of the family.

4.2.1.2 Not enough money for expenses.

According to Widener, Katherine N. (2017), students also struggle to make ends meet and
pay for their schooling, and many of them have low wages, poor financial literacy, compulsive
spending habits, and high debt levels. There are some students who cannot afford to spend on
school projects because not everyone is fortunate enough to have a stable job and family money. I
can say that it is also difficult to study but you do not have enough money to use in your daily
school. Especially now that the pandemic is making it even harder for other students. Many
families are also suffering today because of the pandemic. Student expenses are not provided by
the parents due to lack of money.

The researcher asked the respondent about “What are the factors that played a role in
disconnecting your studies?" Respondent 1…. (Money.)....Respondent 2…. (Problems.) …...
Respondent 3…. (Nagmulat.) Respondent 4….; (Pera.) ….Respondent 5…. (Priority.)

The respondent is dealing with not enough money for expenses. The researcher found out
that most of the respondent reason of what factors that played a role in disconnecting studies is
money. One of the respondent reasons is that prioritizes her growth. Not enough for expenses is
the reason why respondents disconnect their studies.

4.3.1 The effects of being an undergraduate student due to poverty life situation

4.3.1.1 The effect of poverty

When the researcher's asked the respondents about the possible impacts of your situation on
you? respondent 1 said... (because of the problem) …. Respondent 2 …(Can't finish study only)
... Respondent 3 …(madaming epekto) ... Respondents 4…(hirap maghanap ng trabaho)
….Respondents 5 ....(nakakaapekto)

The respondents are grappling with poverty's impact. The researcher's discovered this has a
lot of impacts on those student. There is a high likelihood that students will become depressed as a
result of the lack of support in their daily lives, particularly their schooling needs. The
respondents are dealing with the effects of being an undergraduate. The researcher found out that
many students had passed a certification before stopping their studies, according to the report, and
the reason they stopped was because they were too bad to continue it.

4.4.1 The undergraduate Senior High School students cope with their situation.

4.4.1.1 Stay stronger even though it's hard

According to Bryan hickman 2015) The root cause of poverty is lack of education. The
simple road forward is to recognize that the idea that poverty students cannot be taught is
incorrect and to provide excellent academic, social, behavioral, and physical education to our
city's children right now. Those who live below the poverty line are more likely to keep their
students out of school, which implies that their student will have a higher probability of living in
poverty even if they want to go to school and yet can't due to poverty.
People living in poverty are more likely to skip school in order to work.Poverty is the greatest
adversary of education on all levels. Poor students suffer from health problems and have lifestyles
that make it difficult for them to study or learn.

When the researcher's asked about how they manage the changes brought by their current
situation? Respondent 1 said…(accept it) Respondent 2 said…(trained) ….Respondent
3…(positive side) ….Respondent 4 said…(tanggapin ang sitwasyon) ...Respondent 4
said…(mindset)

The respondents are dealing with their current situation but still they are trying hard to be
stronger even though life is hard. The researcher's discovered that most of their reason is to accept
the situation that they have.

4.4.1.2 Positive mindset

According to Maria Cuca (2013) the only way to escape poverty is focused on education.
We all know that poverty will remain in our societies. It is our life to live. Education is very
important to the student, especially to all of the people around the world. Education is the bright
future to reach the goals of everyone. The college degree has completed the study and has a better
future (even if there are turns in their life to stop studying) than those of the student who stopped
studying with a high school diploma or early graduation. We believe that a trust case can too be
made at the crossing point of education and poverty for at least five categories. This instruction
may be an expressed need; education shows what works; innovation connects us, and strength can
catch up; many see poverty as unfaithful, and commitments of youthful individuals are
motivating.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 26

When the researcher's asked about how they cope with their current situation? Respondet 1
…(stopped studying) ...Respondent 2…(always trust God) ... Respondent 3....(naniniwala lang
ako sa sarili ko at sa plano nya) …. Respondent 4 said…(simple lang) ….Respondent 5
said…(pray lang)

The respondents are dealing with their current situation but still they all have a positive
mindset that they can do it despite their life that is in poverty. The research found out that most of
their reason is trust the process.

5.0 Discussion

The first problem was about the lived experience of poverty under Caloocan City. The researchers
chose Caloocan city where many students dropped out of school due to poverty. Most of the
people in Caloocan are living in poverty. Many of the students there are struggling because of
lack of money, they chose to work at a very young age. It is important to know their experience
during their hardship when they stopped studying. Many Caloocan students are still struggling
today, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Respondents do not have enough money to go to
school and buy the things needed in school. Going to school knowing that your family is
struggling every day is a torture for them. The students today at a very young age became aware
of reality.

The second problem was about the reasons behind why students discontinue a student's education.
Most of the respondents' response is about poverty. With the hardships of life, they chose to stop
studying because they believe there is time for themselves. Respondents are struggling but still
they’re fighting everyday for their lives. They still believe and trust that the day will come when
they will succeed in their dreams. The reason why the respondent discontinues their education is
because of poverty.

The third problem statement was about the effects of being an undergraduate student due to
poverty. According to their responses, If they do not complete their schooling, it may have a
negative impact on their future and career opportunities. Also, poverty affects the children's brain
development and can cause behavioral disorders. Other types of studies are required to fully

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENDS SCHOOLING... 27

understand concerns such as family connections and family impact on child health and
well-being.According to the report, several students had passed a qualification before stopping
their studies, and the reason they did was also because they're too bad to continue due to poverty.

The fourth problem statement was all about the undergraduates coping with their current
situation. According to their responses, it is important to trust yourself because without it nothing
will happen in your life and most of the respondents believe that they can overcome it as long as
they have faith in God that they will be able to comprehend their ambition one day.

6.0 Conclusion

This research was to identify the lived experiences of the undergraduate senior high school
student who stopped in poverty and shows that dropping out of school has a negative impact on
the youth's economic well-being as well as society. Poverty is the biggest test that students to
dropout of high school throughout every situation. Dropping out is frequently the outcome of both
social and intellectual problems in school, rather than being solely the result of poor academic
performance. Absence of resources and support in families, schools, and communities contributes
to these situations.

As a result, it can be argued that the research findings have effectively satisfied the study's
objectives and supported the researcher's questions. The study's findings are significant because
they indicate how critical it is to eliminate school dropouts
as an individual and/or as a society.

Majority of the respondents interviewed on why they stopped studying was because of poverty.
Because of the hardships of life, their family can no longer afford to educate them. Others have
chosen to stop studying at school to help their families. Worked early for their family, even
though it was hard for them. They manage to cope up their problems by trusting God. The
students think that he has a better plan for them.

7.0 Recommendation

The results of participation of the undergraduate student due to poverty is limited by five
respondents. This study did not represent the whole population and sampling because the
researchers set the criteria wherein they based on the judgment and the bias. Even though the
research is carefully formulated to fulfill. The researchers should be included to make the
gathered data error-free.

Researchers are in a place now that will provide a lesson to future researchers to give a suggestion
to each other. people involved in this research so that they can learn more when the time comes
that they will also study it. A higher number of different opinions make the datas become more
perfectly done and factual and it helps the future researchers to have more engaging gathering
data based on the answer of the participant or respondent.

This would also help the future researchers to have more themes and find the evidence to become
a reliable research study. I can say to the future resources make sure that the statement of the
problem is very accurate to the research study so that they know how to ask a question quickly
and easily interview
