CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The environment is something everyone’s familiar with. It's everything that

makes up the surroundings and affects the ability to live on the earth—the air everyone
breathe, the water that covers most of the earth's surface, the plants and animals around
the surface, and much more. It has a corresponding way of how they protect this natural
resources. They are the ones who take the responsibility in maintaining the beauty of the
environment.

The environment encompasses all things that surround every living thing. While
man is the most intelligent among the creatures on this planet, he is also the culprit of all
environment problems occurring at any sides of the world. With man’s desire for the
economic development, environmental problems and issues have cropped up.

Everybody is now facing the challenges of preserving life and how to sustain
culture and to survive. This is due to the impact of climate change related disasters.
Climate change is a critical global issue. The increase of temperature which is attributed
to human activity has brought widespread and unpredictable changes around the world.
Recent scientific studies reveal that human activities have contributed significantly to the
increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that causes climate change.

In recent years, scientists have been carefully examining the ways that people
affect the environment. They have found that we are causing air pollution, deforestation,
acid rain, and other problems that are dangerous both to the earth and to ourselves.
Nowadays, when you hear people talk about “the environment”, they are often referring
to the overall condition of our planet, or how healthy it is.

The environment is the natural world, as a whole or in a particular geographical

area, especially as affected by human activity. Many species live in this natural world and
Bauan Technical High School 8
2

as we live we must take care of it. Global environmental problems of shrinking natural
resources, pollution and population growth challenge the ways people live. A habitable
environment makes it possible for humans to live comfortably. Though it depends on
how the people use and care for it.

People can protect the environment if they are mindful in conserving it. If they do
so, it increases the possibilities that they gain bountiful resources that they can use.
Though the environment help us save our lives, we must be thankful for it. Natural
disasters can be unpredictable, devastating and can cause irreparable damage. They can
cause huge loss of life and properties. Unlike the man-made disasters, these are the
effects of the careless attitude of people. The environment plays an important role in
saving our life like when we are suffering floods. The trees are the one who sip the water
that the rain falls onto the ground.

Be safe. Be aware. These was the common instruction that everyone usually hear
from each individual. Our surroundings are full of toxicities such as environmental
problems. These problems causes the people to be vulnerable to the harmful effects. One
may only be exempted to the harmful effects if we are aware to what is happening on our
surroundings.

Due to the unpredictable events, people encounter the natural disasters without
preparedness. Various program such as medias can help people to be notified for what’s
to come in an unexpected time. Through this program, people can be aware and get ready
for those unforeseen occurrence.

Our Mother Earth is currently facing lot of environmental concerns.

The environmental problems like global warming, acid rain, air pollution, urban sprawl,
waste disposal, ozone layer depletion, water pollution, climate change and many more
affect every human, animal and nation on this planet. Over the last few decades, the
exploitation of our planet and degradation of our environment have gone up at an
alarming rate. As our actions have been not in favor of protecting this planet, we have
seen natural disasters striking us more often in the form of flash floods, tsunamis and
cyclones.
Bauan Technical High School 9
2

Preservation is a biocentric dimension that reflects conservation and protection of

the environment. Individuals with this type of environmental attitude place priority on
preserving nature in its initial state. These individuals are often keen on protecting nature
from any human use or alteration.

Utilization is an anthropocentric dimension that reflects the utilization of natural

resources. An individual with this environmental attitude believe that it is right and
appropriate for natural resources to be tapped on for human use and alteration.

Almost all the people living all over the world, they must be informed that the
behaviors in nature is important to apply to their own self. Anyone can take the risk if
they don’t know the proper attitude and are not aware in maintaining the environmental
problems. People say that they know the right attitude in the environment but they’re all
just “talk with no walk”.

To sum it all, environment is a very important matter to everyone which makes it

easy to say that all of the people are taking care of their surroundings in order to reap
more productive benefits from it and use it for maintaining their everyday lives.

In protecting the environment, we can not only save our own lives but also the
others. Our ozone layer depletion caused by the human activities and inventions are one
of the factors that effects the lives of every individual here on our planet. We should be
aware and evade in being the cause of these poisonous substances.

In conclusion, the researchers will do their best in conducting the study about the
awareness of Senior High School STEM students in maintaining the environment at
Bauan Technical Highschool. It will be helpful to the people who have limited
knowledge about the topic.

This study was conducted because the researchers wanted to know the insights of
the SHS STEM students in Bauan Technical Highschool about the environmental
awareness. The researchers would like to know the extent of awareness of the
respondents. Lastly, the researchers want to assess every respondents’ perceptions of
awareness in maintaining the environment in public.
Bauan Technical High School 1

Bauan Technical High School 1
12

The study does not include the SHS STEM students of other schools.

Objective of the Study:

The General Objective of this research is to know the awareness of SHS STEM
students in maintaining the environment in Bauan Technical Highschool. The researchers
had come up with 4 specific objectives out of the general objective and these are as
follows: To determine the advantages and disadvantages of a clean environment based on
the respondents. To know the factors affecting the environment behaviour based on the
respondents. To determine the effects of their actions towards the environment. To
present a video that will make them reflect on the impact of each individual’s action
towards the environment.

Definition of terms:

Climate Change. A change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a

change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the
increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

Air pollution. It is the presence in or introduction into the air of a substance

which has harmful or poisonous effects.

Deforestation. It is the clearance, clear cutting or clearing is the removal of a

forest or stand of trees from land which is then converted to a non-forest
use. Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use.
The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests.

Acid rain. It is a broad term that includes any form

of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that fall to the
ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms. This can include rain, snow, fog, hail or
even dust that is acidic.

Geographical area. It refers to a position on the Earth. It is defined by two

coordinates, longitude and latitude. These two coordinates can be used to give
Bauan Technical High School 1
22

specific locations independent of an outside reference point.

Natural disasters. Natural disasters are catastrophic events with atmospheric,

geological, and hydrological origins (e.g., droughts, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes,
landslides) that can cause fatalities, property damage and social environmental disruption

Attitude. An attitude is a positive; negative or mixed evaluation of an object that

is expressed at some level of intensity. It is an expression of a favorable or unfavorable
evaluation of a person, place, thing or event. These are fundamental determinants of our
perceptions of, and actions toward all aspects of our social environment.

Preservation. Preservation is the act of maintaining, protecting or keeping

something in existence.

Ozone Layer Depletion. The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere caused by the

release of chemical compounds containing gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry
and other human activities. The thinning is most pronounced in the polar regions,
especially over Antarctica.

Utilization. Utilization is the action of using something, i.e., making practical and
effective use of it. Put simply; the term refers to the use of something or the process of
using it effectively.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter is designed to gain information about the awareness in

maintaining the environment in Public. This chapter presents profound review of the
related literature and studies which are found relevant in discerning the awareness of
Grade 11 Senior High School STEM Students in Maintaining the Environment in
Public.

Related Literatures

Local

According to Chealsea et. al (2012) that in the objectives of EE, education should
help learners value the environment hence getting motivated in making appropriate
environmental decision and later on taking action in addressing environmental concerns.
This is because change in students‘ behavior has much to do with change in attitude.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (2016) that one of the

objectives of the Science education in the Philippines is to develop students who are
environmentally-conscious and ecological-friendly. The month of June of each year is
declared as the Philippine Environment Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No.
237 signed in 1998 by then President Corazon C. Aquino. During the celebration, various
important events are being celebrated such as the World Environment Day on June 5,
Philippine Eagle Week on June 4-10 and Philippine Arbor Day on June 25.

Ogunjinmi (2012) said that an individual‘s personal evaluations are more

revealing of the person‘s attitude than what he or she claims to do. Attitudes are favorable
or unfavorable feelings toward a characteristic of the physical environment or toward a
related problem and are therefore directly related to behavioral change. Behavioral
change which is paramount in addressing environmental challenges is a function of
change in behavioral intentions.

According to Kulasekera (2012) that the environmental attitudes are related to

environmental problems. Environmental attitudes have been defined as ―the collection
of beliefs, affect, and behavioral intentions a person holds regarding environmentally
Bauan Technical High School 1
42

related activities or issues.

Sarkar (2011) cited that the participation is the point of action towards
environmental protection. It is the final stage in EE conceptual framework depicting and
informed citizenry with capacity to make informed decisions and take action. Effective
participation process should be creative and flexible drawing on the wide array of
approaches and methods.

Foreign

Rogayan (2019) reiterated that the earth is now suffering from innumerable
afflictions at present caused by egregious human activities that relentlessly denuding the
environment. The challenge for everybody is to take the wheel of action and move
towards a common cause in preserving life on earth.

According to Sivamoorthy, Nalini & Satheesh Kumar (2013) that the growing
concern with environmental issues and their impact on general awareness is one of the
most noticeable phenomena of the last two decades. Marpa and Juele (2016) said that the
rapid depletion of the earth’s natural resources and the fast degrading environment are the
realities which can no longer be denied.

Woodgate (2012) indicated that the awareness of environmental issues has grown
tremendously over the last decade as modern science and more globally conscious
population continues to enlighten the connection between a healthy planet and
livelihoods of people everywhere. The connection has arguably been undermined by
population growth, urbanization and land area loss, creating a potential divide between
people and the natural environment. Through contact with and learning about natural
areas we can begin to mend this disconnection and restore our balance with nature.
Environmental education (EE) has the potential to facilitate awareness that leads to this
connection.

According to Woodgate (2012) that understanding the basis of environmental

attitudes to facilitate environmental behavior is advantageous, since a clear goal of
environmental education is to change behavior. For educators, the question should
Bauan Technical High School 1
52

become not only how much do students know about environment? but also what are their
attitudes towards environmental quality?

Puri and Joshi (2017) indicated that the environmental education is a process
aimed at developing a world population that is aware of and concerned about the total
environment and its associated problems and which has the knowledge, attitudes,
commitments and skills to work individually and collectively towards the solution of
current problems and prevention of new ones.

Related Studies

Local

Gonzaga (2017) cited that people’s awareness has been recognized as a powerful
tool in environmental sphere. Information through education has an important impact to
alter behaviour.

According to Marpa and Juele (2016) that in the Philippines, studies focused on
the environmental awareness and practices of high school students as basis for disaster
preparedness program. The level of awareness and extent of practices in green
technology and the environmental awareness of the graduating college students.

Honabarger (2011) reiterated that the environmental awareness of students was

not adequately translated to pro-environmental behavior. It was reported that consumers
who acknowledge awareness of environmental issues still do not take steps to purchase
environmental friendly products. The study later bridged the gap between environmental
awareness and environmental behavior through eco-labels, text, or both, over cleaning
products.

According to Yurtta and Sülün (2010) that the cities have been driving forces in
economic and social development as centers of industry and commerce. The World Bank
estimates that in the developing world, as much as 80 percent of future economic growth
will occur in towns and cities. Yet along with the benefits of urbanization come
environmental concerns. These include a diversity of problems, from lack of access to
clean drinking water, to urban air pollution, to greenhouse gas emissions. As a result of
Bauan Technical High School 1
62

rapid population growth, competing demands of economic growth and environmental

protection is a major challenge.

Ziadat (2010) cited that to understand environmental attitudes, the level of

knowledge possessed by the population under observation concerning the severity of
environmental problems, their reaction to and their interactions with nature must be
ascertained by assessing environmental awareness.

Foreign

According to Sivamoorthy, Nalini and Kumar (2013); Sharma (2016) that several
studies have been conducted to gauge the environmental awareness and practices of
students in various levels. Foreign studies have focused mainly on the environmental
awareness and practices of college students.

Gihar (2011) studied the environmental responsibility among prospective

teachers of Ghaziabad District of Uttar Pradesh. The study revealed no significant
difference between rural and urban prospective teachers regarding environmental
responsibility, whereas female prospective teachers have scored significant higher mean
values on all the dimensions of Environmental Responsibility Assessment Inventory.

Mondal and Mete (2010) cited that the status of environmental awareness among
1000 secondary school students residing either in rural or urban areas. As efforts to
intensify EE in schools through multidisciplinary approach have continued to increase
over the years, a varied feedback has been received regarding students‘ level of
awareness, attitudes and participation in environmental activities.

Redclift and Woodgate (2013) indicated that the result of socioeconomic, cultural
and biophysical difference between the different urban settlements, it is no longer
obvious that all urban students are advantaged as postulated by studies that modeled rural
versus urban comparison. This necessitates the need to establish the relationship across
these divides in an urban set up. This is essential in establishing the special and unique
characteristics and features of various divides in order to determine how best to use EE to
address environmental problems in different divides. This study thus looks at the level of
Bauan Technical High School 1
72

environmental awareness, attitude and participation among secondary school students in

Kasarani and Kibera Divisions.

Penny Singh (2013) conducted a study on environmental Education: Enhancing

Learning and Awareness through Assessment. The major findings of the study were
Awareness of environmental issues among Environmental Education students and the
community at large, this study situated assessments within communities of practice
around the university. Using action engagement within action research students had to
work with insiders from the community to identify, formulate action or intervention plans
and find solutions to problem situations in the community. Using action engagement
within action research in this study definitely enhanced student's knowledge of their
community's problems. Their personal involvement and the cyclical approach adopted,
enhanced students' emotional understanding and gave them an insider perspective into the
situations and problems that required intervention; and trust was built between the
students and members of the community as they worked together to accomplish a
common goal.

Synthesis

The different studies presented above contributed to the development of the

presented study. Discussion of differences as well as similarities with the present research
were presented below.

The literature's further explain what environmental awareness are. In this literature,
different kinds of environmental awareness are shown.

The study of Gonzaga was similar to this study for awareness has been recognized as
a powerful tool in the environment’s preservation. Enough amount of information may
bring a drastic change to the way people treat the environment.

The studies of Marpa and Juele are similar to the present study in a way that both are
focused in maintaining the environmental awareness and practices of high school
students. It was known that showing environmental awareness in an early age would help
one to be a better individual and better adult in the making.
Bauan Technical High School 1
82

According to the study of Honabarger, environmental awareness and environmental

behavior have a huge gap between each other in which this current study would like to
address to and bring about to the future researchers and readers of this study.

In the study of Yurtta and Sulun, the increasing concerns together with the rising of
economic advancement becomes alarmingly high that pursuing the protection of the
environment also becomes challenging. The study conducted by the present researchers
would also like to inform this concerns regarding our environment.

Ziadat’s study was similar to the researcher’s present study because assessing the
environmental awareness of the people would help result to straightening their
problematic environmental attitudes.

The studies of Sivamoorthy et. al and this present study focuses mainly on the
environmental awareness but with SHS students as the respondents instead of college
students.

Mondal and Mete’s study is similar to the present study in a way that both focuses on
the status of environmental awareness of students.

The study of Redclift and Woodgate’s is similar to this study for both look at the
level of environmental awareness, attitude and participation of secondary school students.

The study conducted by Penny Singh is similar to the present researcher’s study in
terms of enhancing the learning and awareness through assessment. A student’s
participation and emotional understanding of the current situations and problems will
further give the students an insider’s perspective into developing a more positive and
disciplined attitude to counter the present environment’s concerns caused by
undisciplined environmental behavior

Research Methodology

This chapter discusses and describes how the researchers gathered the necessary data
and information that they will use for the entire study. It describes who were the
respondents and what will be the focus of the research. This also shows the procedure in
data collection, the instrument used and how the data collected were analyzed.

Research Design

This research is qualitative in nature. Phenomenological research is associated

with naturalistic inquiry and deals with the issue of human complexity by exploring it
directly. It emphasizes the ability of humans to shape and direct their own experiences.
Naturalistic investigations emphasize understanding the human experience through the
collection and analysis of qualitative materials that are narrative and subjective. The
findings from this type of study are based on real life experiences of people with first-
hand knowledge of the phenomenon or situation.

Relatively, this design is appropriate for this study because it aims to know the
awareness of Senior High School STEM Students responsible in maintaining the
environment.

Research Local

The study will be conducted in the the Bauan Technical High School because the
repondents are the students studying in the said school. The respondents will be
interviewed inside the campus where the researchers will observe the actions acted upon
by the respondents. The study will be conducted in the second semester of the academic
year 2019-2020.

Participants of the Study

The respondents of the study are the STEM Students in BTHS. They were chosen
through availability sampling. It is a non-probability sampling technique where subjects
are selected because of their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researcher.
Furthermore, availability sampling is a statistical method of drawing representative data
Bauan Technical High School 2
02

by selecting people either by volunteering or selecting units because of their availability

or easy access. This method is chosen by the researchers because of the availability and
the quickness with which data can be gathered.

Data Collection

Since the researchers used phenomenological research approach, they are tasked
to observe and interview their respondents. In order to obtain and gather data about the
study, the researchers used two methods; observation and interviewing. The researchers
will give out questionnaires for the purpose of interviewing the respondents to know the
awareness of Senior High School in maintaining the environment and a checklist to
observe the awareness of Senior High School in maintaining the environment.
