ASME Section VIII

What ASME Requirements are Relevant?

The most important ASME Code for our lines of pressure relief valves
is Section VIII, Division 1 of the Unfired Pressure Vessel Code. This
section deals with vessels with a design pressure equal to or greater
than 15 psig [1.03 barg]. Within this section, mandatory paragraphs
UG 125 thru UG-136
UG-125 UG 136 specify how pressure relief devices are to be
used to protect a vessel. In addition, this section specifies how a
manufacturer shall design and test a valve or valve product line
f its
for it relieving
li i capacity. it A manufacturer
f t who
h produces
d valves
l iin
accordance with the requirements of this section is permitted
to apply the ASME ‘UV’ Code stamp to those valves. Most AGC
pressure relieving devices set at or above 15 psig have the ASME
Code stamp. There is also a non-mandatory Appendix M which
generally
g y outlines additional good
g practice.

ASME Section VIII

What What ASME Requirements are
Relevant?
Most of application will in some way require valves meeting the
requirements of ASME Section VIII. In some cases, municipal, state,
provincial or federal authorities may specify other and/or more strict
standards. Some industries follow other codes even though the
pressure is above 15 psig
psig. Examples are the United States Coast
Guard (USCG) regulations for liquefied gas ships and the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules for the
h dli
handling, storage,
t andd safety
f t requirements
i t ffor LPG (liquefied
(li fi d
petroleum gas) and ammonia.

Section I of the ASME Code deals with direct fired steam boilers and
the safety valves required. Section VIII valves may not be used for
Section I applications. Section III of the Code applies for nuclear.

API
What API Requirements are Relevant?

API publishes many ‘standards,’ ‘guides,’ and ‘recommended

practices
RP 520 Parts I & II most often. The full title is Recommended Practice

Refineries.
Refineries

sales.office@knwn.co.id

API
What API Requirements are Relevant?

Part I - Design includes terminology, sizing formulas (all AGC sizing

formulas are derived here), and a little information on types of
pressure relief valves (PRVs), and relief requirements for vessels
exposed to open fires, i.e. fire sizing.

Part II - Installation discusses the effect of pressure losses in the

piping upstream and downstream of pressure relieving valves.valves
Pressure losses can cause valve chatter (see definition) and rapid-
cycling. Part II covers various applications where careful design of
th piping
the i i iis absolutely
b l t l necessary forf proper valve
l performance.
f
RP 520 goes hand-in-hand with ASME Section VIII.

sales.office@knwn.co.id
PT. Karya Nireko Warga Nusa Protego Indonesia Representative Office

API
What API Requirements are Relevant?

The ASME does not apply to pressure vessels where the design
pressure is less than 15 psig [1.03 barg]. This is normally covered by
API Standard 2000, titled Venting Atmospheric and Low-Pressure
Storage Tanks (Non-refrigerated and Refrigerated). Standard 2000
establishes the necessary relieving capacity for vacuum and
pressure conditions. It also governs the design requirements for low
pressure and vacuum relief valves.

However, when valves are set below 15 psig the ‘UV’ stamp may not
be applied even when the valve meets Section VIII Code
requirements.

sales.office@knwn.co.id
PT. Karya Nireko Warga Nusa Protego Indonesia Representative Office

API
What Kinds of Pressure Relief Valves are in
API?
There are three basic types of pressure relief valves.
1. Weighted pallet type valves are those in which direct weight is
used to keep the seat closed. This valve is limited as to the
maximum set pressure available because of the weight required.required
Substantial overpressure (often 100% or more) is necessary to
get the pallet into full lift. Weighted pallet valves, also called
weight loaded valves
weight-loaded valves, are used for both pressure and vacuum
applications.

sales.office@knwn.co.id
PT. Karya Nireko Warga Nusa Protego Indonesia Representative Office

API
What Kinds of Pressure Relief Valves are in
API?
2. Direct spring operated valves are those in which the valve disc or
spindle is held closed by a spring. As pressure increases under
the disc, the force pushing up on the disc increases. When this
force equals the force of the spring pushing down, the valve is on
the threshold of opening.
opening Any additional increase in pressure
causes the disc to lift and the valve to open.

sales.office@knwn.co.id
PT. Karya Nireko Warga Nusa Protego Indonesia Representative Office

API
What Kinds of Pressure Relief Valves are in
API?
3. Pilot operated pressure relief valves (POPRVs) are those in which
the main valve seat is held closed by the system pressure itself.
The pressure acts upwards on the seat area (nozzle-to-seat
(nozzle to seat
contact area) and downwards on the top side of an unbalanced
moving member, usually a piston, called the dome area.
Th piston
The i t area iis llarger th
than th
the seatt area, causing
i ththe fforce
pushing down to be greater than the force pushing up. A
pilot controls the pressure in the main valve dome. A pilot supply
line transmits system pressure to the dome via the pilot. When
system pressure reaches set pressure, the pilot opens and
pressure in the dome is reduced, which causes the main valve to
p
open and relieve the system. The dome pressure reduction is
sufficient so that the system pressure acting upwards against the
seat area exceeds the downward closing force from the dome
area.

NACE MR-01-75/ ISO 15156-1

 Recommendations for selection of materials for services with H2S

present in the flow stream (potential for intergranular corrosion)

 Whether NACE applies depends on H2S partial pressure which is a

function of the H2S concentration and total absolute pressure and is
determined by the end user or engineering consultant

 Does not cover soft goods; gaskets, seats, diaphragms, etc.

 It is the valve manufacturer‘s

manufacturer s responsibilty to interpret NACE and
provide compliance by the supplied ‘‘bill of material‘‘

 Manufacturer and customer interpretations sometimes differ

 B&R standard material code ‘’00’’ complies with NACE, but customer
may want to utilize bellows design, special spring and/or bellow
materials,
t i l etc.
