The World Outside the Glass

In a small pet store, just around the corner a pregnant dog gave birth to 5 puppies. Their names
are Bob, Jeff, Lex, Ren, and the youngest Trey.

All the puppies are lovely and playful, and soon enough they are put up to be taken by people
or families that will love and cherish them.

As they were placed in front of the glass window of the store, Trey was fascinated on what was
going on the street.

“How where they walking with only two feet?” Trey wondered. He thought that they must
really practice a lot to do it.

The next he was curious about is their fur. “How can they change the color of their fur like that?
Can I also do that?”

Just then the bell above the door chimed then walked in one of the strange creatures that he
always see at the other side of the glass. The creature began to wonder about and walked in
front of him and his siblings.

She first looked at Jeff then Ren, and lastly looked at Lex. Suddenly she heard her say, “I’ll take
this one” while pointing one of her weird paws to Lex.

Strangely enough, she took Lex and went out the door. Trey thought strange, “Why was Lex
allowed to go to the other side? Why was she taken?” Just then one of the elder dogs they
were with told him “Your sibling went to a place full of people that will love and take care of
her.”

With that new found information, Trey had this new mission to also be taken to the other side
of the glass. A few weeks after Lex being taken away, another strange creature, which they
called human came inside. Last time a woman came inside but now it was a man who has a fur
called suit. He looked around and stopped in front of them again.

Without thinking much he took Bob and said that he’ll be taking him. Trey felt envious. Two of
his siblings had already been taken outside and here he was still looking at the mirror. A few
days later Jeff and Ren were also taken. And Trey was left alone looking at the window. He felt
sad that he was still not able to get outside.

Just then an old woman came inside of the store. She was looking around and went to stand
before him. He was excited “Am I finally getting out of here? Is the human that will be taking
care of me?” But just then the old woman scowled and said, “Why are you putting this mutt in
your window? He looks ugly it will chase away your customers.”

After that following fit, Trey was moved to the inner part of the store while his previous place
was occupied by younger puppies. Trey started to think, “Am I ugly? Is that why I am still not
being taken by anyone? Was that why I was left alone?” While thinking that he stayed sad and
quiet for the following days.

He missed his usual spot, being able to see what was going on outside was really fun and his
new spot was becoming small for him. Just then Trey thought, “If there’s no one who will take
me, I’ll just go outside on my own.” Seeing how the pet store owner opens the lock of his cage,
he tried multiple times before actually succeeding. He then ran and tried to go outside but to
no avail he was immediately caught by the store owner. He didn’t lose hope and tried again and
again. The owner being bothered with his plan put him at the storage room so that he won’t be
able to go out. Trey having no more motivation to go outside went to pass his days just lying on
his cage.

One day, the bell from the front door chimed again, Trey thought that one of the cute puppies
will be taken and that he should not do anything and just lie down. After a while, he still hasn’t
hear the people outside leaving. A few seconds later he heard the storage room door being
opened and there he was a young boy looking at him.

“Mama! Mama!” the young boy cried.

“This one he looks like me, I want him!”

Trey looked strange, “Why would this boy say that he looks like me?” Just then he looked and
saw the young boy’s feet, it was missing one just like him. Being born with a defect had made
Trey unattractive by only having 3 of his paws.

“Are you sure this is the one that you want?” the store owner asked.

“Yes!” the boy said. He then went to look at his face more closely and said “Don’t worry I’ll take
care of you. We’ll go on walks and play catch and maybe eat some ice cream!”

“Sweetheart, you know that dogs aren’t allowed to eat ice cream” the boy’s mother said.

“Then! We’ll do the other things except ice cream.” the young boy beamed. Trey was excited
and was wagging his tail with enthusiasm. He was then taken out of the store and for the first
time for a long time, he was able to go out to the other side of the glass.
