Lesson 3: World Music Drumming

For my third lesson, I wanted to focus on composition. Since it was the holiday season, I
had one opportunity to record the class during the lesson. Due to technical difficulties, I did not
capture this lesson on camera, however, I hope to fill you in on some things that went well and
some things that would need adjustment.
My plan was to separate the class into groups and use their background knowledge of
notation, to create a short pattern to play on the drums. Some things that went well were the
students engagement in the activity. Although it was more challenging, the students teamwork
showed their dedication to the task. Additionally, each group had a positive attitude not only to
their own performance but the performances of the other groups. Something that could have been
better included my own instruction of what to do. The majority of groups had difficulty
performing together and reading the music they composed. Additionally, my expectation of the
length had not been clearly and directly given. So, I use the first group as a guinea pig.
During the second group I changed a couple things. Instead of having separate groups
create and perform their own patterns, we created one as a class. To further their understanding
of the class pattern, we put words to it so we could speak along with our playing.
Throughout the constant times I tgaught these drumming lessons, my view of the end
objective changing as I observed and learned the capabilities of my students. What ever we did
in class, my main objective was for the students to learn and improve not only their social skills
but their abilitie to hold a steady beat and pattern on the drums. Additionally, I frimly believe
that each and every student that participated in the drumming unit enjoyed their time playing and
learning about the world of drumming.
