the industry and experts from external academic world to develop a curriculum that
caters to the requirements of the industry. On the basis of feedback received, the
syllabi is revised. Also teaching-learning and evaluation processes are reviewed for
further improvements.

Similarly, in many of the schools, review of syllabi has been undertaken and as per
the recommendations of Board of Studies which consists of Industry experts and
external academic experts, the syllabi and the teaching pedagogy has been reviewed
for further improvement.

Almost all the schools had undertaken various activities under the banner of Social
Responsibility Forum (SRF) and conducted various programmes along with NGOs.

programmes by associating themselves with various NGOs, the students gain hands-
on experience of working towards a sustainable society.

In order to give Access to Education to the Disadvantaged, University has policy of

granting scholarships to the needy students. As a part of faculty development the
faculty was deputed to many programmes conduction in India as well as abroad.
They were also encouraged to participate in the international conferences, seminars,
colloquiums etc. Two of the faculty members participated in Global Colloquium on
Participant-Centered Learning (GCPCL), in Harvard University. In order to ensure
the overall development of the students, students were encouraged to participate in
co-curricular and extra-curricular activities across various fields.

There is a mandatory component of Internal Continuous Evaluation in every School in

every subject of every year of the programme. This Internal Continuous Evaluation is
implemented through projects, tests, assignments, quiz etc.

Executive MBA (EMBA)
MBA HR
1 year Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights Management (PGIPRM)
6-months Diploma in Drug Regulatory & Intellectual Property Rights (DRIP)

In SPTM the following programmes were initiated :

UG
B.Pharm.+ M.Pharm.

PG
M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutical Analysis)
M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutics) + MBA (Pharma Tech. & Healthcare Management)
M.Pharm.(Quality Assurance) + MBA (Pharma Tech. & Healthcare Management)
M.Pharm.(Pharmaceutical Analysis) + MBA (Pharma Tech. & Healthcare
Management).

In BSSA, introduction of M.Arch. programme has been initiated.

In MPSTME, Shirpur campus, M.Tech. in Computers & Mechanical Engineering to

be started from the Academic Year 2012-13 has been approved by AICTE.

At Bengaluru campus, 15-weeks Certification Programme on „Equity Research and

Corporate Valuation‟ has been launched in association with Amba Research

At Hyderabad campus, 2-years full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management

(PGDM) has been introduced.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction :

The School of Business Management brought about following two innovations in
pedagogy:

1. Internet Marketing: The course was offered in the second year of the full time
core MBA program, a key learning objective was, “At the end of this course, the
students will be able to design and execute internet marketing campaigns”. One of the
ways this learning objective was addressed was through an experiential activity. In
this activity, the students in this course designed and executed internet marketing
campaigns for a college event. The students picked an existing college event or
launched a new student activity, and promoted the same through various internet
marketing channels. Students executed a 360 degree design, focusing not only on
3
designing creative and appealing campaigns, but also measuring their effectiveness in
terms of participation, recall, viral activity, and content contribution.

Most of the campaigns in this activity became very popular on the campus, and hardly
anyone (outside the class) knew that these were being done for classroom purpose.
These activities not only imparted learning through practical experience, but also
became highly engaging, interactive and interesting for the students. For some of the
campaigns the student teams have continued to work even after 4 months of the
completion of the course; for example, Shutterbugs, and Arcadia.

2. Business at the Bottom of the Pyramid was a new course offered in the second
year of the full time core MBA program. A key learning objectives in this course was,
“At the end of this course, the students will understand the behavior of customer at the
bottom of the urban pyramid”. One of the ways this learning objective was addressed
was through a category research activity. For this activity, the students carried out
primary research in a Mumbai slum of their choice in assigned product categories.
The students captured their interactions with the people in videos. For most students,
this was their first visit to a slum area; as a result there was lot of apprehension.
However, after this activity students were really ecstatic about their findings. They
were amazed by the Brand awareness and the earnings in slum areas. They posted
their videos on Facebook, and felt confident about understanding the customer
behavior at the bottom of the urban pyramid much better than what is covered in
books or business cases.

Another key learning objective in the Business at the Bottom of the Pyramid course
was, “At the end of this course, the students will be able to develop marketing
strategies for serving bottom of the pyramid customers”. One of the ways this learning
objective was addressed was through an experiential activity in which the student
were asked to pool money within their teams, buy a set of products and sell the same
in the Ambarnath Shivratri fair, which was held on Feb 20th, 2012. As part of this
activity, the students carried out a market research to understand the demographics in
the fair, and designed an experiential marketing campaign for interacting with the
customers.

In MPSTME, new subject of “Information Security Assurance and Computer

Forensics” has been introduced in B.Tech. (IT) Trimester XII, as an elective subject.
Robotics Lab has also been commissioned.

In School of Distance Learning, the lectures are delivered through Elluminate Live!
The faculties delivered the lectures through virtual classrooms. Also along with the
study material prepared by NMIMS faculty, the students are provided with the Audio
CDs which are summarized course presentations.

In School of Science, Hands on training workshops were conducted for students of

Biological Sciences (Animal Cell Culture Training) and Statistics (SAS Workshop) to
ensure students gain relevant experience on the subject.

In BSSA, in the latter half of the final year of the course, students are trained as
interns in professional practices recommended by the Institute. This period helps them
to comprehend the needs of practice in the future. Apart from mainstream

4
Architecture practice, the students are imparted with many other skill sets which
could help them pursue other related fields including art, photography, history,
graphic design, animation, etc. Various electives are included as a part of the
coursework wherein photographers, graphic designers, artists, historians are invited to
conduct a formal programme that the students can opt for.

In SAMSOE, an innovative practice has been introduced wherein 5% of the lectures

in each core course are conducted by industry experts. The School had, under the
scheme, eminent people from industry to teach, Senior Economist CRISIL, Senior
Executive from RBI, and from BCG, who covered various aspects of the course in
their respective areas.

At Bengaluru campus, keeping in view the demand for professionals in Latin

American countries, Spanish language was offered as a course to PGDM and
EPGDBM students.

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started :

In SPPSPTM, the following Post-Graduate Programmes were introduced :
M.Pharm. Pharmaceutics + MBA (3 years integrated program)
M.Pharm. Quality Assurance + MBA (3 years integrated program)
M.Pharm. Pharm. Analysis + MBA (3 years integrated program)

In School of Commerce, Capstone project to Third Year B.Com. (Hons.)

5. Examination reforms implemented :

The examination work has been decentralized. In order to conduct the Internal
Continuous Evaluation, the successful examination personnel have been posted in all
the schools who will in turn report to the Central Examination Unit.

6. Candidates qualified : NET/SLET/GATE etc.

As School of Business Management is the only School which has a graduating batch
and almost all the students were interested in taking up the job in the industry or
corporates, no student applied for NET/SLET/GATE etc.

In School of Science, one student has been awarded the Inspire Fellowship by DST
and one student each has cleared CSIR-NET exam, ICMR exam and UGC-CSIR
(JRF) exam.

7. Initiative towards faculty development programme :

During the last year, two faculty members have attended the 3-week long Colloquium
for Participant Centered Learning Programme at Harvard Business School, Boston,
USA.

Thirty-two faculty members were deputed for conferences/workshops/seminars

organized by international and national organizations of repute like EPS, Global

SRF – The Social Responsibility Forum cell at SBM, NMIMS

The academic year 2011-12 has been very eventful for SRF. It had a lot of events
organized under its umbrella and went a step further in doing its bit for society.

With the idea of helping NGOs showcase and sell their products, the Social
Responsibility Forum (SRF) organized “Mela – the Carnival” on 10th August, 2011.
To scale up the sale of products, a competition between eight teams was organized.
Each team had to help the NGOs to sell their products to prospective customers.

Udaan - A 3 day intra-school competition from 18th October, 2011 to 20th October,
2011, was organized to engage the students and motivate them to introspect into areas
of social concern in a fun filled and interactive way. The event comprised three
rounds which were, Online Quiz, Audio-visual round and Pictionary.

The „Basics in Wildlife and Nature Photography‟ workshop that was organized on
18th October, 2011, witnessed an enthralling response from the students of NMIMS,
engaging over 60 participants. It was organised in association with GreenKarbon, a
Sanctuary-Deutsche Bank climate change initiative. Dr. Anish Andheria, (Director,
Wildlife Conservation Trust and Director, Sanctuary Asia) known for his brilliance in
photography and for introducing young people to the joys of capturing nature with a
click, was the speaker of the day. He took the students on a walk of nature from
behind the lens and taught them the various techniques of making the picture perfect.

A national level social B-Plan competition, Annveshan was scheduled. Designed in

association with SEED, the objective was to use the benefits of SEED‟s product to

22
help sustain/support existing farmers‟ irrigation needs and leverage its features to
benefit them throughout the year irrespective of application or industry. The event
was launched formally through the Students‟ Council at a national level. We received
an overwhelming response from students of various B Schools of India and, the top 5
students were invited to come and present at NMIMS Campus.

In an endeavor to provide one of the greatest community services, that of saving lives,
the Social Responsibility Forum (SRF) of NMIMS successfully organized a Blood
Donation Drive with the free Thalassemia check-up. The drive was conducted in
association with the Lions Club of Juhu. Sponsors like MBASkool and Café
Chokolade joined hands with SRF to give momentum to this noble initiative. The
drive was well supported by Think Foundation, which coordinated with various Blood
Banks to ensure a smooth process. In all, 309 people registered for the blood donation
and 279 bottles of blood were collected.

Manjunath Candle Light Vigil was organized in the premises of SBM, NMIMS to
pay homage to Manjunath Shanmugam on his sixth death anniversary. This event was
organized to activate the student community of NMIMS, awaken their consciousness,
and to take a pledge – “Honor Integrity! Fight Corruption! Around 100 students
participated in the vigil. The programme was an effort to make the students aware of
the perils of corruption and to inspire them to come together and fight for a worthy
cause.

Effective integration is of prime importance of the sustainability perspective in

business education for developing socially responsible future business managers. It is
in this context, Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in partnership with
NMIMS designed a Pan India level „Digital Poster Presentation‟ Competition. The
competition was based on students‟ analysis of the sustainability practices adopted by
the company, based on the review of literature available in the public domain and
their subsequent interpretation of the same to be presented in a creative image form on
a poster. The Students had to select a company from the following list of sectors
Engineering, FMCG, Retail, Pharmaceuticals, Automotive, Extractive Industries
(Cement, Oil and Gas, Aluminium, Copper, Mining). Each participating team was
required to submit a 500-word write-up along with a creative poster describing how
the leading company selected by them has successfully adopted the sustainability
agenda. The competition received an overwhelming response from management
students from various premier B schools, including IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore,
IIT Bombay, NITIE, NMIMS, IIFT, JBIMS, IMT Ghaziabad, Great Lakes and others.
Though all the posters reflected the students‟ perception about the company‟s
sustainability practices, twelve posters were selected for publication in the BCCI
Calendar for the year 2012.

The Leaders of Tomorrow initiative was kicked off this year at the Gokalibai High
School. The basic objective of this initiative is to help the young impressionable
minds to develop their personalities to make them aware of the different opportunities
that lie ahead of them, and to instill in them the confidence to believe that they have it
in them to be the Leaders of Tomorrow.

The We Care Winter Internship programme has been organized with the aim of

SRF, the core cell of NMIMS, this year forayed into SRF Consultancy Projects.
These projects offered students an opportunity to implement plans in the arenas of
Finance, Marketing, Consulting and Operations on a wider scale. Students gained
exposure in managerial tasks and decision making. Following were the initiatives of
SRF Consultancy Projects:

I-Post: I-Post is an initiative of I-Initiate an organization by Mr. Raj Jaganam.

His other ventures include the famed Cycle Chalao Andolan which had nomination at
Mahindra‟s “Spark the rise”. I-Post offered students at NMIMS an opportunity to do
the brand building exercise for I-Post products. It offered students an opportunity to
proceed ahead with establishing new marketing channels and strategize sales and
promotion. The challenge was to create a sustainable marketing model for products
and services made by NGO‟s which can compete with other commercial counterparts.

Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI): CGSI as a non-profit

organization, needs funding for its various programmes like milk testing, annual
magazine keemat and consumer education programme. Currently there is no
sustainable funding model in place and CGSI lacks funds to execute the various
events that it has planned. One Project was to develop a strategy for fund raising and
Events. The task was to help them create funding model using various options
available. CGSI also wanted our views about corporate sponsorship. Students were
also required to relook at the goals of the organization and recommend suitable ways
so that these goals can be achieved in the optimum way. Students also had to conduct
a survey to provide consumers a forum to vent grievances against products/services
which fall short on delivery after making grand promises and provide valuable
consumer insights to industry / service providers. This in turn, can help them focus on
improving on the areas of concern, from the consumers' perspective.

Mumbai Votes: Mumbaivotes.com is a not for profit, independent info-bank

and does not support or endorse any political candidate or party. The portal is the
outreach arm of the Informed Voter Project - a registered non-profit institution with
the Charity Commissioner‟s Office, Mumbai under the Bombay Public Trusts Act
(1950) - Regd. No. E-27959 (Mumbai). Mumbai Votes is funded by voluntary
donations from citizens of Mumbai acting in their personal capacity.

The project works in two modes: Vigilance and Election. During the election modes
interns were supposed to interview all the BMC candidates. These interviews were to
let the people know about the work the corporator had done/ was willing to do in the
future. Also they did a criminal record analysis of every candidate contesting the
BMC elections. During the vigilance mode interns were supposed to analyze the
performance of the corporators in terms of quality\number of questions asked by the
corporator in the assembly. By comparing the manifesto of the politician's party with
his/her actual performance Mumbai votes publishes an annual report card of every
politician. This helps the citizens in making a well informed decision before casting
their votes.

25
Toybank: Toybank is an initiative by self motivated youngsters who try to
transform the lives of less fortunate children into a more meaningful and joyful
existence. Toybank offered students of NMIMS a chance to explore deeper into their
promotion, pitching, event management and operational skills. The two projects
offered were to create awareness among students, conduct a toy collection drive and
arrange events during Joy of Giving Week. The other project was for students to hone
their operational skills to develop an inventory management system.

Railway Children: Railway Children, a UK based development agency works

with local NGOs in UK, Africa and India with an aim to bring positive, sustainable
change in the lives of these children who have chosen to leave their homes and adopt
and adapt to life on the streets. The project required volunteers to document the
learning which Railway Children has acquired over a period by supporting different
kinds of interventions through various partnerships, map the evolution of advocacy
strategies and their achievements over the years, and document the same. In addition
to the above, they were also be required to assist in formulating action plans for our
partners, based on the recent sustainability plans which Railway Children has been
facilitating partners to evolve. This action plan is aimed at providing a road map for
the partners to implement the sustainability plan in a period of three years. Further,
they also assisted in reviewing and finalizing performance management tools and
processes of the organization, which the previous set of volunteers had evolved
(Railway Children has pilot tested the tools).

Swadhar Finaccess: Swadhar is a Mumbai based non-profit organization. It

provides the economically disadvantaged, predominantly women living in slum
communities, an increased access to financial services and helps to bridge the gap
with the formal financial sector. It offered NMIMS students two projects under the
domains of Finance and Marketing. Finance aspirants are required to prepare Micro
Insurance Business plan for the two custom made policies of “Jeevan Mangal” and
“Jeevan Madhur”. These two policies are custom made by LIC, of whom SFA is an
agent. SFA imparts Financial Education to economically disadvantaged persons pre-
dominantly those living in slum communities. The training is imparted through use of
extensively researched, designed and developed training modules. Marketing students
were required to prepare marketing plan, design marketing material, conduct
secondary research on financial literacy initiatives.

placement process involved detailed tasks with regard to scheduling placement
period, placement format, planning, collecting student database and CVs, connecting

26
students with NGOs/Sustainability Departments of companies/public sector
organisations. Based on aligning student profiles and organizational requirement,
efforts were made to facilitate communication between the MBA interns and the
organisations. To orient and equip students with internship requirements three open
dialogue workshops were conducted to enable them to orient them to the social sector.

The students reported to their respective organizations. In all, they were expected to
work for at least 6 hours per day. Students undertook projects in various domains like
Branding, Business Development, Children Education, Community Development,
Disaster Management, Empowerment, Event Management, Financial Management
and Resource Mobilization, health, HR, Marketing Strategy, Microfinance,
Operational Optimization, Project Monitoring, Right based, Social Media, Social
Research and Case Analysis. The students reported to their faculty coordinator on a
weekly basis about their work progress and further plans. Simultaneously, regular
feedback was solicited from the organisations as well about the work undertaken by
the students. After 3 weeks of internships, the students completed their projects and
submitted their reports to their organisational mentors and faculty coordinators. In all
95 per cent of the organisations appreciated the efforts put in by the students and gave
satisfactory feedback regarding their work. Similarly 92 per cent of the students
expressed great level of satisfaction with the internship programme.

Post the Internship period, students were given a platform to exhibit their work
through various events and competitions like „We care Poster Presentation
Competition‟ and „We Care Photography and Documentary competition‟. The
Competitions were judged by 35 eminent dignitaries who have had vast experience in
the social sector and government organizations. Students with commendable

30. Support from the Alumni Association and its Activities :

SBM
Alumni Cell, SBM, NMIMS, this year hosted a plethora of activities for both its
alumni and students. The cell took upon itself to take up numerous initiatives to
ensure that a strong bond is maintained between the institute and our alumni. The
primary focus of the cell's activities was to foster effective alumni – institute
interactions.

The cell involved Mr. Tarun Bhargava CFO-FCRL of Future Group (Alumni of Batch
1993) during the inaugural address for our incoming batch of MBA students of 2011.
Further the welcome address for our second year students was delivered by Mr.
Ramaswamy Krishnan, Managing Director of Aspire Infinite Pvt. Ltd. (Batch of
1992). A constant stream of interaction between the students and our alumni was
ensured through our flagship „Alumni Round Table Conferences‟, which gave the
alumni an opportunity to interact with students on a more personal level. The cell also
involved the alumni in the admission process by having the alumni as panelists during
the GD-PI process. Moreover, various alumni have been invited to college to judge
events and as guest speakers in events thereby increasing the student interaction with
our alumni.

The Alumni Cell, NMIMS has strengthened the network with the alumni through
various social networking platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Portal, etc. We have
dedicated accounts in both these sites to provide necessary details to our illustrious
alumni about the happenings of our events. A strong mechanism of communication
has been setup with the alumni on a day-to-day basis, which involves informing them
about job postings, regular database updations, invites to events, special achievements
by our alumni, responding to their queries and so on. Moreover, to ensure effective
communication and interaction between the alumni of various batches, the alumni
portal, alumni.nmims.edu a social networking platform, has also become fully
operational. Adding to this, the cell took upon itself to release the monthly e-
newsletter, Aluminous, to inform the alumni with the latest developments in the
institute and to make them feel a part of it. Moreover, the Alumni Cell also helps in
contributing towards other cells of the Institute like Student Council, Finomenon,
Adverb. The Alumni Cell also conducts Round Table Conference. This is a

37. Placement services provided to students :

SBM
Ranked among the top B-Schools of the country, the successful placement season of
SBM of NMIMS only underlines its authority and dominance. The excellent track
record of the past three decades was reaffirmed by the participation of leading
companies across sectors, quality of the profiles offered, the number of loyal and new
recruiters and the sheer number of offers made by the participating companies.

The School of Business Management of the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management

Studies (NMIMS) Mumbai concluded its Final Placement process for the Batch of
2012. Even though the industry was cautious in its outlook towards recruitments this
year, it reposed its faith in the MBA students of NMIMS by continuing to offer them
coveted profiles across functions and domains.
It was a challenging season of sorts with the global economic downturn and the large
batch size of four programs coming together for placements. While some recruiters
were cautious and selected in few numbers, there were many for whom the executive
mandate to participate in campus placements took time, on account of which a few
companies could not be accommodated. However, there were a good number of new
recruiters and some participated after a gap. The alumni network had a big hand to
play in ensuring participation from some of the best names. The unstinted support of
the corporate world can be attributed to their faith in the brand NMIMS, its faculty,
alumni and students.

The total number of graduating students went up to 413 (an increase of 11% over the
previous year) – while the intake of the Flagship program MBA Core remained at 300
and the MBA Actuarial Science at 30, that of Focus programs of Banking and Capital
Markets increased. While MBA Core which has been in existence for three decades
maintained its strong foothold in the industry, the relatively new Focus MBA
programs too gained broad acceptance in their respective niche areas.

The average compensation for the Batch 2012 stood at INR 13.04 lakhs per annum,
while the highest CTC offered on campus rose to INR 30 lakhs per annum. Out of
121 companies that participated in the process, a stellar 34% of the companies were
new recruiters, or companies that were returning to NMIMS after a hiatus.

SPTM-MUMBAI & SHIRPUR

Placement cell has done 100% placement for MBA (Pharma.Tech.). Highest Salary
was Rs.12.65 lakhs. Average Salary : Rs.5.6 lakhs.

84
MPSTME
In MPSTME, Mumbai & Shirpur campus, 100% students were placed. Training
provided through workshops on technology, softskill and aptitude skill improvements.
International placement for 2 students of MPSTME at Works applications, Japan.

SOS
The Department of Statistics at School of Science set up the placement cell and
has been active in inviting prospective companies to campus for recruitment. Two
students have secured a job at TAM Media Research, Mumbai.
Placement cell keeps a tab on changing dynamics of corporate world & builds
relations with prospective employers for the students for summer internships/
summer projects.
The placement cell is also focusing on visiting companies in different industry to
explore more employment opportunities. The students of M.Sc Statistics visited
RBI at BKC, Mumbai. Four students of the 1st Year M.Sc Statistics were offered
summer internships. One student secured summer project with IIT, Powai.
The Department of Biological & Chemical Sciences have also initiated an
„Industry Interface Cell‟ to keep the students abreast of the latest trends in the
