This is the first restaurant of the client which they decided to be a all day dining and bar. Through this
restaurant ‘Barometer’ which also means benchmark, the client wanted to create a new identity in the
heart of the city which is classy yet very comforting.

The approach to the design was to create a space that is rustic yet classy like a vintage car, by
curation of experiences through charming ambience and delectable food. Restricting the palatte
to concrete, wood and metal was necessary as, wood is a centuries old material and concrete
being modern,they both age gracefully.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 8

Planning wise the area was divided in 2 parts for kitchen and dining. Bar was placed at the center to
form the focus of the restaurant. The front side was opened up to create an informal feel. The wooden
and brass-finish bar, which forms the focus of the restaurant, contrasts sharply with the cement walls.

Tables in the center are deliberately rotated at 45 degrees to avoid the direct eye contact with
neighboring tables. This small move not only breaks the monotony of the furniture arrangement
but also helps to have your own privacy while dining. It also exposes the space differently from
every table.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 9

The projection of Black and White silent films and the wire art adds to the dynamism of the space by
creating a multi sensory experience.

The teak wood furniture adds to the warmth of the place set against the industrial elements,
concrete finish & back walls. The merger of two materials and textures on the wall has been
carefully planned to be imperfect. Planned imperfections make the spaces more human and
comforting. The yellow paint on the main door is an interpretation of the light cone which adds
to the sensorial experience.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 10

The wire objects on the wall have been
carefully chosen from the traditional and modern
kitchen equipments interpreted in abstract wire
art form. The emotion that it evokes connects
you to your personal memories with food which
makes the experience of dining in Barometer
more pleasing.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 11

The table numbers have been derived from the birthdates of people associated with project right from
carpenter, site supervisor to the designer & partners in this restaurant. This simple gesture creates a
sense of belonging for everyone who has been an integral part of creating this restaurant in their own
capacity.

When it opens in the morning for breakfast, the fabricated glass & metal doors open making the
space very informal like a ‘street side café’. While in evenings, through the glass doors, it gives
the glimpses of inner cozy ambience. The beer brewing process painted on the floor of waiting
area keeps the people engaged while they are waiting to get their table.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 12

Texturally speaking, the space
combines natural elements like wood
with modern elements like cement
and metal, creating a space that is
rustic yet classy like a vintage car.

Being the primary unit of organization and
habitation in India, villages over a period of
time have become synonymous with the ‘identity
of India’ itself. The cultural and architectural
diversity found in villages across India can be
mesmerizing yet the influence of globalized
invasive materials and knowhow can be seen
percolating unanimously.

The merits and demerits of this invasion continue

to spark attempts at discovering sensitive design
solutions in an actively urbanizing India. The
texture of which itself is heavily interwoven with
various village like settlements.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 17

When we received the proposed name for the Café/Bar from our client, these questions suddenly
came to light. Studying the dichotomy in schools of thought regarding what villages represent and the
interpretations of their relevance, and ever-changing state was where we started our ideation. Textures
and volumes of the space have been designed to reference an experience, reminiscent of rural
Indian settlements.

Shaded gathering spaces which are semi-shielded from direct view form the larger sitting zones.
The possibility of various movement patterns, give the illusion of an intimate organic settlement
wherein the regulars find their own path, seldom taken by new visitors.

The city has a thriving brass handicrafts industry hence lending it the name of Pital Nagri (“Brass
City”). Brass vessels of different sizes were incorporated in the décor to reference this local
trade. Indoor pendent lamps were customized to be suspended from the ceiling using wooden
posts with carvings. The flooring of the central court was composed using broken slabs of rough
black Kadappa stone found locally in India.

The form of the planters and walls have been carefully modulated to generate a surreal impression of
rural settlements. The terracotta plaster was achieved after various trials to lend warmth and vibrance to
the space, while the exposed concrete rings cast in iron sheets puncture these walls exposing glimpses
across. The plant species were locally curated to ensure their survival with least resistance.

Kake di Hatti is an authentic Punjabi fine-dine restaurant. Being first outlet as fine –dine and holding
legacy of decades, for us it was like painting blank canvas with its rich history. Word “Punjabi” instantly
reminds us of dhaba style or a flamboance visuals. But we decided to defy stereotype image of Punjabi
fine- dine. Instead we chose to have an approach which is more intangible and make space speak
for itself.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 25

As you enter, you are welcomed by the elegant arch portals which takes you to a completely
different place, where you are about to experience the taste –you never had before. Composition
and texture of the place dates back you to the olden times of Chandni Chowk where over all
ambence maintains balance between past and present.

As wall screens the dine area, it builds a sense of curiosity in customer’s eyes making him urge to
peek inside. Natural wooden floating ceiling complementing arch structure in the alley guides you to
Reception desk. Multiple rustic colour arches on the reception wall gives 4th dimension to the waiting
area. Copper chandelier made in house is eye catching.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 26

A vibrant colour door
with geometric outline
stands still to take you
for a journey. As you step
inside, an alley of round
arches welcomes you.
Vintage wooden frames
hanged on Wall of Fame
on right side of entry,
displays the legacy
of restaurant.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 27

As we move further along with the scale, character of space also changes. Series of brass frame
mirrors used in bifurcation of space magnifies the elegance. A brush of handmade tile in between
seamless concrete flooring breaks the monotonous character of space just like the pinch of spice in
food.

A cosy fine dine area with back drop of rustic tone arch, elegant Pinjara chandelier with soft light and
salmon couch creates a perfect ambience for diners to enjoy their food. Centre arch wall is accentuated
with an unusual brass mural of spoons varying in scale. Rustic brick wall framing live tandoor area is
adding life to the space.

Wooden jaalil frame like partition is not only designed to serve the purpose but also acts as an element.
Rustic table pieces are specially designed to demarcate a line between arches as well as for storage.
Overall dining layout is divided by round arches breeding seclusion to the diners.

Most difficult task for us while designing was not to create unessential banalism in design process.
Most of the murals, chandelier and texture are customized as per the demand of design. The 8 weeks’
timeline quantifies the magnitude of brainstorming and workforce. But as said ‘ALL THAT’S WELL ENDS
WELL’ as it turned out, was an iconic space created in the heart of the food city Ahmedabad.

As you step into the terrace café, you feel disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the city,
savouring the breezy vibes of the space. Upon entering from the lobby, the enclosed space is adorned
by welcoming Indonesian elements, which opens up into a windy outdoor expanse. The thoughtful
hierarchy of spaces allows a sense of pleasant surprise to the visitors. Crafted in three segments, every
segment of the café is thoughtfully designed in harmony, considering the purpose of the space and the
context, and hence, each segment offers a different experience to the visitor.

With an impulse to craft a café that breaks the monotony of café design in the town, Vertu
proceeds to stand by the purpose through a thoughtful use of material palette and design
elements which beautifully embrace and enhance the natural context and gracefully screen the
robust contextual buildings. The design creates a breezy and sophisticated ambience, which is
dissimilar to the mentality of limiting it to a use of solid elements in the rooftop.

Situated in the urban fabric of Ahmedabad, the site of the café had many opportunities and challenges.
Located on an intermediate floor in the existing building, the site had two terraces along with an
existing enclosed space. With an existing adjoining building on one side flushed with a porous green
screen creating its own context, the site had all the other sides were open to the view of the nature and
skyline of the city.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 32

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 33
Every design element and artwork crafted for this café has a story. Nature is closely experienced here.
The spaces are porous, which allows natural breeze gushing through the hair, making visitors feel out
of the world and giving them a unique experience in the urban context. The second segment, though
enclosed, flaunts a beautiful view of the skyline of the city on one side. This space leads to the third
segment and the division consists of framed screens which sport a glass panelling. This segment
enjoys an informal open space with no structural barriers. The sitting around the raised platform allows
a pleasant sunset view.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 34

It is understood that not every process goes smooth or hurdle free.
Right from the commencement stage to the completion stage of
crafting Vertu, there were many challenges faced, but it is very
interesting to know how every challenge was converted into a
beautiful opportunity by timely and thoughtful decisions and how
it enhanced the existing design concepts. Most of the elements are
kept raw and bare. Considering the tight budget of the client.
The material for cladding was used in a very unique way, which
considerably reduced the costing, yet achieved the desired level
of aesthetics. The approach to the fine dine spaces is oriented by
guiding wall which conceals the service areas. One unique feature
of the café is that all the service areas are properly studied and
designed accordingly, yet beautifully concealed, though being
adjacent to the dining spaces. Being a partially open to sky café,
conditions during rain have been considered and resolved.

‘Whether to solemnize or to recover
from vacuous blues, It is a blessing to
discover a space that colours every
mood into its own hues.’

AR. SAUMIL PATEL AR. PRASHANT TRIVEDI

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 37
Out of three segments of the café, only one segment was enclosed, keeping the other two segments
open to the stunning natural context. Near the entrance, the first segment was initially conceptualised
to be an enclosed space, but due to a change in the regulations of the government, the constructed
elements had to be demolished, after which there was a revision in the regulation which stated that
the roof could be covered, keeping the sides open. The partially constructed elements were retained,
keeping one frame partly constructed, unlike other fully constructed frame, with a philosophy of the
beauty of acceptance of transience and imperfection. So, the segment has the top covered, with sides
open, which flaunts a beautiful flooring that synchronizes with every shade of the sky. What makes this
terrace café more unique is the way conceptually the ground is brought to the terrace, and the cool
colour palette which beautifully flaunts the use of hues of blue.

Worked to develop a café that pushes the boundaries of convention, ambience of Vertu is more
about the harmony of constructed elements and nature surrounding it, resulting into pleasant
views, a play of lights and shadows, and a unique experience.

Our young clients, with whom we have associated previously for other assignments,
approached us with a lot of excitement to design a new restaurant which could take forward
the legacy of their more than 50 years old name in the FnB industry.

The brief was simply laid out before us. They wanted a fine dining space which should not come out
looking rather overwhelmingly expensive. It should be inviting, glamorous yet sensible. Another very
important criteria we had to keep in our minds while designing was to comprehensively make the
restaurant look distinctive in a way that its character would not be lost in the pool of many other
restaurants in its surrounding.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 43

Spread across an area of tight 2100 sq. ft. of space, Daler is designed with the reminiscence and
nostalgia of the past memories of celebratory fetes in Northern part of India. The idea was to bring in
elements which bring a flashback of memories one might have of the fetes visited during the many
festivals in India. The space was envisioned around a layered structure with fierce colours over a few
relatable features which bring about cheerful vibes to celebrate life every day.

The floor plan of the restaurant is segregated in 3 different levels, with each level having its
own unique usage. The majority of a-la-carte dining seating is laid out at the first level with a
dedicated waiting area. Upon entering, one is welcomed with a kinetic installation of varied
sized pinwheels, finished in metallic gold, which forms the backdrop for the indoor branding of
the restaurant.

The bar and the buffet is allocated at the second level which becomes centric to the a-la carte area and
the private dining space at the third level.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 44

The design scheme is aimed at binding all
these different activities at different levels
within the same space and presenting people
with a non-intimidating environment that
portrays an inclusive ambience. A material
palette was meticulously curated primarily
including greys and golds with an obvious
introduction of carefully hand-picked tasteful
colours to bring about festivity vibes.

The purposeful use of grey concrete finish on the walls with teal as the main accent colour gives a
perfect balance to the restaurant which forms the base for our over the top eclectic shaped mirrors. The
floor in black and white makes the interior looks dramatic which adds to the overall look and feel. The
patterns, colours, forms and shapes are used to imbibe a feeling of nostalgia which makes an instant
connect between the space and the user.

A lot of mirror has been used in the interiors, be it on the ceiling or on the walls, which, because of the
reflections, in a way depicts a happy chaos around and gives a sense of a comprehensive environment.
The ceiling in itself is a ginormous art installation which is an abstract reminiscent of a giant wheel, one
of the prime focal points at fetes.Multi-faceted surfaces in conjugation with reflective mirrors, fluted
glass and gold detailing formed the prime identity of the project.

Surat may not be as space-starved as Indian metropolises of Mumbai and Delhi, but the restaurant
typology sees a predominance of eateries operating within enclosed, air-conditioned environments.
That’s not to say that restaurants with a considerable al fresco section do not exist, but these are limited
to largely utilitarian establishments that pay scant heed to ‘place-making’.

So when the clients approached the architect to design a cafe/restaurant, the design thoughts
immediately veered to creating something that the city lacked: a well-designed garden restaurant
in the true sense of the word. Given that the land was leased, further clarified this vision: a
design that kept the built-form to the minimum and used economic materials to rationalise
project costs.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 51

The location in a quiet by-lane was opportune: the relative serenity would further the requisite laid-back
air that was crucial to this type of development. While the restaurant had to have a certain privacy, given
it’s location, the architect also wanted to ‘respond’ to the street. Ergo, a wide landscaped elevated
set-back was created as a transition from the street level to the fly-ash brick masonry wall that marked
the ‘boundary’ of the restaurant.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 52

Beyond the wall, the entry was orchestrated through a lobby-like enclosed space (abutted by a
waterbody) that ‘releases’ you into the restaurant proper, with an open courtyard nestling within an
L-shaped semi-enclosed area. The visual aesthetic within is organic and free-flowing, with materials,
colours and forms that are grounded to the earth. The seating options range from the al fresco to ones
with varying degrees of semi-openness. Immediately bordering the courtyard void are smooth cement
‘benches’ created in situ.

While to one side of the entrance lobby is a section shielded by a slim undulating ferrocement
wall with cut-outs — more screen than wall — to the other is an open section, both are roofed by
corrugated GI sheets whose edges are cut such that they, collectively, reinforce the organic look
and feel.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 53

The colour scheme — a predominance of an earthy red,
with a dash of blue at the entrance — and materials —
leftover stone arranged in a homely mosaic, smooth
swells of cement and MS — are aligned to a rustic look.
Overhead salvaged construction iron rods form an
undulating installation, almost like a heavily contoured
site manifested as a wire-frame drawing. Its shadows
create a rippled effect on the floor, distorting views and
adding more dynamism to the vistas.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 54

And of course, where would a garden restaurant be without plants. Curated tropical greenery
— frangipani, heliconia, dracaena, bamboo, banana, bougainvillea, and many more — imbue
the restaurant with natural freshness. Strategic plantings — as borders, in the centre of the
courtyard, a small bed in the paving of an open section, create a lush natural look.

With 24 glorious years in the world of design experience, even today, each day is just as exciting for
Minnie, who challenges herself to create and evolve with every new project.

Minnie Bhatt has trained under some very renowned interior designers and with her experience, she
set up - Minnie Bhatt designs, 14 years ago.

Having grown up in South Bombay, the exposure to heritage structures and the charm of
vintage buildings and the old world neighborhoods has been deeply embedded in her design
sensibilities. In a subconscious way, these often, find their way subtly into the spaces she
creates.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 61

Minnie’s style of design is mainly eclectic and contemporary. The mantra of Minnie Bhatt Designs is not
only to create exquisite spaces that are timeless and authentic, but also never to repeat these creations.

She has worked on residences of some renowned names from the entertainment industry and
a whole lot of popular restaurants and bars, namely, House of Daaruwala, Radio Bar, Chin Chin
Chu, Effingut Bandra, Burma Burma- Noida, Delhi & Bengaluru, Via Bombay, Bindass Begum

Today, Minnie with her creative genes has been single-handedly re-defining the restaurant interiors with
new innovation. She understands that the success of a restaurant does not only depend on food and
drinks but the ambience also plays a major role in retaining customers.

Another unique project that makes a special mention
in Minnie’s profile of work is a 400-year-old temple in
Vrindavan, Mathura. This particular project involved
Minnie to recondition the temple whilst retaining the old
heritage interior. Besides, studying the subject of Lord
Krishna closely, she also traveled across the country in

Together they created a beautiful backdrop for the idols in the form of peacock feathers with
semiprecious stones like lapis, malachite and amethyst inlaid in white Makrana marble. 'Tree of
life' inspired jalis in marble or the windows of the prayer hall, a tree to shade the sandstone idols
of Krishna and his consort Radha, in pure Brass. She involved artisans from Rajasthan and Agra

The JP Nagar area of South Bangalore has fast become the place to head to for a night out on the town.
Adding to the brewpub landscape of the city is JP Nagar’s latest – The Pump House. With a seat
capacity of 400 people, here is a space that occupies a mighty 16,000sqft.

The owners of The Pump House have always been sure of what they wanted to name this large space.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 71

For the space to be vaastu-compliant, we placed a water body to the northeast. Offsetting this is a
circular bar display through which the structure of a pump house has been recreated. With this bar
bottle display, we have connected the dots with the idea of a pump house, except here it pumps out
alcohol and beer.

The concept of a pump house is directly associated with the flow of water and we have brought that
flow into the architecture of the space. Curves are an integral part of the design of the space – be it the
slightly elevated seating pods on the ground floor, the curves of a movable wall that can be lowered to
bring in more breeze, the brick-lined circular wave-like structures demarcating each of the three levels.
In fact, all three bars – on the ground and higher levels follow this circular display style.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 72

The seating on the ground floor has been created in an amphitheater style on two levels, giving each
group of diners a different vantage point. Looking down on it from the higher floors gives the space a
unique visual appeal. All of the landscaping, including the little fig tree you see were planted right at the
start of construction so that they grew in time for the opening.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 73

How many spaces in Bangalore can boast of
a completely retractable roof? Well The Pump
House certainly can. Kept open to the sky
all day except at night and during the rains,
this brings in a great deal of natural light.
Combined with the walls that can lowered or
raised, ventilation and the best of Bangalore
weather is what you can enjoy, in a controlled
set-up. The desert fans certainly help in
maintaining comfortable temperatures when
the place packs up – and believe us, it does.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 74

The staircases leading up to the higher levels have their hand rails inspired from a famous French
Bridge. We will leave you to guess which one it is!

All the materials used in the creation of the space are completely local – from the bricks on the walls to
the Cuddapah on the floors.

Special attention has been given to the lighting structure. This was especially needed
considering the volume of the space. Bringing in a live feature ensured that the space did not
look drab. The roof has been lined with colour changing LEDs. On first glance they look red but,
they can turn into a range of colours adding a level of dynamism to this brewpub.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 75

Going from day to evening to night time at The Pump
House gives you a unique experience – from the visual
appeal, to the shadow play thanks to the retractable roof
and the lighting structure. Like we said, JP Nagar has a
great new address to hang out at.

AMRA CAFE

PROJECT AREA: 7345 sq. ft.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 82

Amra cafe is a contemporary cafe situated on one of the busiest roads of Ahmedabad. The word
'Amra' means 'mango', named after the only existing mango tree on the site, which inspired us
to evolve our design. The site had an existing pre-fab structure, as it housed a warehouse prior.
We decided to do minimum changes and foster it with few aesthetic and functional modifications.
This worked out well for us, as it meant having a column-less free-flowing space beneath.

The cafe can be primarily divided into two parts; the indoor and outdoor, each having its own distinct
mood and vibrancy. Since the cafe is located on a busy road we decided to create a buffer space, for
maintaining privacy for the visitors, using a exposed brick wall and a green screen. Upon arrival, one is
welcomed with a waiting area, back dropped with quirky bright colored lanterns, which work out well as
a photo-op.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 83

A cafe is a place where diverse people come and visit. Keeping this in mind, we purposefully
designed layouts such that it gave the opportunity to cater varied options for accomodating the visitors
in differential mood and capacity. One first enters the outdoor area, which has been kept open; except
a semi covered, mildly-lit, cozy gazebo and a brightly lit juice bar area. These spaces have been kept
free flowing, yet made interesting with a curvilinear geometry to break the monotony in movement. The
outdoor area has a mango tree resting in the center. There is theme grid wall with creepers over it in the
background. This wall has water spouts, creating a soft trickling sound of the falling water.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 84

The entire space is dim-lit and sets a perfect mood and ambience for evenings and movie showcasing.
The juice bar counter has a modern-industrial look, embracing the rustiness of the existing structure.
Use of material like corrugated sheets in ceiling, a top hung metal screen with planters, graphical
tiles on walls, patterned laminate with the subtle wooden palette, brings out a balanced harmony in
composition. The flooring has usage of four different natural materials: wood for the gazebo and juice
bar, laid-down red exposed brick for the curvilinear seating, stone and loose pebbles for walkway.
Dense plantation to create privacy barriers and to engulf the space in green has been our deliberate
effort.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 85

A tessellated stone walkway with a lily pond on one side and planter
on the other, directs one towards the entry towards the closed
indoor area. The partition wall between the indoor and outdoor
area is cladded with exposed brick and glass partition, allowing
maximum natural light to penetrate inside.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 86

The indoor has been divided into three zones: the formal dining, the semi-formal dining and
informal / recreational area. The seatings have been designed accordingly keeping the usage
in mind.

The formal area has a rich dark blue backdrop with customized majestic solid wood seating. The area
is mildly lit in yellow light to soothe the ambience. The three tables here have been separated using
wooden partition screens that gives the diners enough privacy, while enjoying their meals.

The semi-formal area has simple wooden and metal tables. To add an element to the quirk,
multi-coloured metal chairs have been added. The use of graphical tiles in the flooring adds a visual
distinction for the visitors.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 87

The recreational area has all the fun elements; flexible seatings made out of rope and tires, printed table
tops in irregular hexagonal geometry and a pool table, accurately defines the functionality of the space.
All the walls have a distinct quality, where each is different than the other, yet all sync in harmony when
seen as a whole. The grey corrugated sheets used on one of the walls, goes hand-in-hand with the
exposed brick work.

The pattern is interesting done, such as to hide a door to the owner’s cabin. Use of bright colours
like yellow and blue in furniture and walls make the place lively and pumps up overall vibe of the place
making it a perfect café ambience. A grafitti wall with bright colours, sets an ideal place for the
youngsters to click pictures and create memories.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 88

Use of material in repetition for both indoors and outdoors creates
memorial connectivity between the spaces. A screen with staggered
skewed lines has been specially designed and used in multiple areas.
Amra café integrates into a divine, cheerful place, where one can come
and enjoy various corners and spaces on each visit.

This restaurant is named as ‘Sanskruti’, an echo of socio- cultural dialog of the neighborhood,
situated on verge of Kadi –Nandasan Village.

The client brief to emphasize traditional design which reflects way of life and entice people from
nearer places as well as traveler with familiar impression. The design ensued was imagined traditional
interpretation of contextual influence and fusion with contemporary character of the exterior building
linguistic.

The building exterior with exposed red brick work, bold grooving pattern, bands of concrete, glass
façade speaks of simplicity and modern look along with strong roots of earthen touch.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 95

The waiting – entrance threshold intricate with clay, mural art, artifacts, carving door and vivid wooden
panels make setting of cultural inherence. The entrance façade crafted with perforation in graphics

enormous solid entrance door with touch of soft carving signifies a strong and curious presence of
other side. Rustic Mild steel screen of triangular pattern barrier lead to surprising experience
immediately after opening entrance door.

Vessels and other old elements like ‘Chakki’ – millstone flour grinder, pots, ‘Valovanu’- wooden
blender/churner, ‘Khatiya’ traditional seat, ‘Sambelu’ - ‘Khandaniyu’- wooden spices maker are
decorated in shelves and corners.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 96

Spatial arrangement of restaurant signified by division of sittings with elements which creates thin
invisible lines. The flooring is dark brown stone finish tiles and central area with small deco tiles
matches with color palette. Also, identify the movement path around it for easy excess to intruders
and serving.

‘Mandapa’ made of four wooden columns with a peripheral carving band on top along with distinct
flooring of small tiles in central area distinguish four group sittings. Each sitting shares back with other
adjoining and create talk with surrounding.

Leading path introduce one to reception/Desi bar which gives glimpses of prominent language
of the interior. Red bricks vertical cladding on wall was dressed as formal back drop of special
bar arrangement to poise fusion of informal seating with formal setup. Bar counter made of wood
and cladded with metal tins.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 97

Accent wall finished of wooden
bands, pop imprint bands, red bricks.
The materials and graphics define by
bold grooving lines; ornamented forms
represent simple approach of complex
assortment of styles.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 98

Each furniture is detailed identical to interact with other elements. The sides of each table is moulded
with wooden carving bands. The ‘Baithak ‘are in combination of; low table made with old doors as table
tops and low height wooden seats with ‘Gaddi’ - mattress and ‘Takkiya’- Bolsters as back rest; in Indian
style sitting. The cloth for tapestries are chosen to add colors and fine design.

Lightings are adding drama to each area with specific design. The bare ceiling finish highlights conduit
design, thread work and directs focus of visitors towards vertical surfaces, floors and furniture.

The wooden Arches, columns, circular pattern screens in between of each sitting on the left make
niches and cozy spatial arrangement for individual 6 persons gathering. Raised plinth with one
step wooden deck gives pause in flooring and draw the territory of change in sitting.

Sanskruti emerges with important
characteristics of various elements. Different
textures of various materials portrayed in optimum
color palette frames a complex experience into
a simple but thoughtful play of space.

Located in the Landmark Indian Express Building on Queens Road in Bangalore, the name of this Bar,
Restaurant and nightlife venue is derived from the Road number and pin code of its address; No.1
Queens Road, Bangalore 1.

The building was originally designed in a 1930’s Art Deco Style and as Architects we wanted to
further the Deco character of the building by integrating a prominent arched colonnade into the existing
fenestrations on the street level. The Colonnade, painted in a deep red-oxide color recalls the visual
language of the High court of Karnataka in the same precinct.

The design moves that ensued were an imagined contemporary interpretation of a grand
bye-gone era mixed with contextual influences. The 20ft high ceilings of the space were treated
with a series of repetitive vaulted arches and rendered in a red-oxide finish. Accent walls were
cast in corrugated cement with a green oxide pigment. The flooring design was created with a
bold and alternating striking linear pattern of local grey sadharhalli granite and black cuduppah
stone. Columns were clad in sheets of Mild steel and then lacquered.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 105

The spatial flow is via a hardscaped entrance courtyard peppered with palm trees. On entry are two
symmetrical curved mid-century timber and brass screens that create an intimate entrance foyer. On
either side are two bays of restaurant seating. Perpendicular to the axis of the entry and foyer is a linear
bay with a large Island bar on one end and a stage for live music performances on the other. The space
between is interspersed with high seating on the ground level and low lounge seating on a raised
wooden platform.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 106

A distinctive feature that we introduced
into the interior space was a series of
lofty freestanding cement arches. These
arches, positioned between the existing
grids, create visual movement and
fluidity in the space while reinforcing
its vault and arch vocabulary. The arches
have LED light integrated within them,
capturing and framing the energy
encompassed within.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 107

Other highlights in the space are the imposing custom designed chandeliers that we created in the
entrance as well as over the bar counter. The chandeliers were inspired by the branches of trees
bearing fruit and are hand crafted with Mild steel pipes with ends fabricated in rings of amber coloured
resin. Large frieze artworks on each of the restaurant walls recall the zigzag and ziggurat pattern
influences of the Art Deco era. Additional Deco inspired linear light scones were designed by us in
brass and fluted glass to emphasize the verticality of the interior.

The furniture is a mix of fixed booth style seating, low and high restaurant tables and low sofas for
lounging. The colour scheme of a deep red, peacock green, blue and olive complement the green and
red oxides of the shell. The various elements within the space make for a heady cocktail of influences.
Deco inspired interiors, Japanese and Peruvian influenced food, eclectic cocktails and live music
spanning different genres create a unique vibe.

Chocoholics and design enthusiasts can now get their fix at the same place. Zuci- Chocolates and
Boulangerie is a delightful new restaurant at the upscale, Road 45 Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad.

We believe that every project is an invitation to embark on an unexpected and fascinating journey. A
chance to tell an adventurous story full of soul; incorporating a mix of materials and influences. A story
that portrays what the place has to offer and one that touches every customer.

Zuci [pronounced as Shu-Chi], derived from the Sanskrit word, ‘Shuchi’ meaning ‘pure’ is the
brainchild of a young enthusiastic couple who were trained in chocolate-making and baking
in Europe, few years ago. Their zeal and earnestness to kick-start a new chocolate brand in
Hyderabad with premium quality products, was infectious. A platform was set to weave a story
with charming, luxurious décor, to make the chocolate treats an experience to revel in.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 112

Zuci is a project that draws diverse threads from old-world European interiors and weaves them into
a gorgeous contemporary setting. Those threads include, arched facades, Venetian-plastered walls,
plush dark-wood paneling, patterned dual-tone flooring and polished metal-work, creating a
kaleidoscopic assemblage of a Mid-Century Modern style setting.

The external façade is an abstract installation of spheres enclosed in a crimson arched- façade wall. A
composition that captures the simplicity, depth and delight of chocolate. The spherical lights placed in
this installation throw dramatic shadows on the burnt-sienna wall behind them.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 113

On entering the restaurant, a 28-feet long main display-counter lit with the rhythm of ten large
suspended spherical lights, welcome us. The chocolate display counter is a crystal brown stone-
finished unit with a clean white stone-finished countertop and a temperature controlled glass enclosure.
The picture is complete with a beautiful back-wall with a composition of inverted brass metal arches
and black metal stripes. The dual-tone flooring with a progressing pattern of stars, adds to the drama.
A lush peach, Venetian plastered wall enriches the Entrance area. The bespoke designed metal bread
racks and linear shelves for chocolate-coated nuts and snacks flank the entrance corridor.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 114

At the farther end of the corridor, is the Dining area
accentuated with a scarlet red arched-wall, overlooking
lush greenery and sunlight streaming through. The plush
velvet-fabric sofa seating is fixed against a ribbed
dark-wood paneled wall, with two large circular, stained
mirror highlights. The tables are bespoke designed glossy
graphite-grey top, framed with a rounded brass-metal
rim. The legs of the tables have a circular metal base with
structured, black metal legs. The comfortable, bucket-style
chairs are cushioned with Prussian-blue leather seats
that add color to the rich palette of the space. Each of the
4-seater tables is illuminated with a hanging bell-jar light,
in a subtle gold finish.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 115

The Dining area continues into a Chocolate & Coffee Bar, which is a play of brass-striped walls and
black granite counters, with a rich wooden ceiling to set it apart. Small glass globes light up the bar
seating subtly, drawing attention to the gorgeous coral, velvet-cushioned bar chairs.

The use of simple geometric patterns, arches, spheres and stripes used in different ways through the
space, brings cohesion and adds a sense of luxury. The restaurant is equipped with a robust 900 SFT
kitchen area, with separate freezing units, prep, baking and service sections.

For those who want to make the pilgrimage, to experience the tantalizing delights of fresh confectionery
and the luxurious chocolates and décor, Zuci is in short, blissful and ‘pure’.

Jalpaan is a restaurant that has been designed to raise the bar for authentic Indian cuisine eateries.
The concept was to convey with the interior, the fresh and traditional essence that the menu was
going to offer. We have reflected our ideas in the spaces through spatial planning, light and materials.
The space creates moods for every occasion which is achieved through ambient lighting and the color
schemes adopted.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 122

Concrete as a surface is usually applied in spaces to bring out a raw appeal, Wood as a material
works well with simple and straight craftsmanship and Saffron as a color symbolizes Indian culture and
traditions. We at FOAID, have combined the three elements to give the onlooker a complete package of
what we call as “Indian Modern”. A style that has been innovated for this project. For the final touches,
Ecclectism, a fusion of contemporary styles with classical accessories is used to embellish our version
of Jalpaan. The experience of the user and his/ her engagement with the space is both physical and
meta-physical. Extensive use of saffron and shades of the same inculcates a cultural diaspora which
gives “the Indian eater” the feeling of eating at ‘home’.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 123

The image of the restaurant is captured by micro concrete panels fixed on the north eastern
side which is very visible from the Saligramam road. The front façade boasts of a brushed steel
staircase which juts out from the elevation of the building. The staircase is connected to the
lobby in the first level. The wooden panels on the front façade fixed below the ACP gives a
contemporary feel to the building. On the ground floor, as you enter the reception, it features a
vibrant background with a brass table, where glass is used to provide transparency to the viewer.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 124

The chaat area is highlighted with its open space with outdoor seating. This semi open space gives the
user an experience of popping a pani puri in the original manner, where each one has been handmade
to please their taste buds. The rest of the three storied structure houses the restaurant on the first floor
and the banquet hall on the second floor.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 125

The restaurant is illuminated with a varied range of
lighting fixtures that have been specially curated
and prototyped to blend with its surroundings at the
same time act as an element of sculpture. The 528
cylindrical segments run along the central spine of
the ceiling with variations in heights creating a sense
of drama in the space. The concrete mocktail table
that has been spliced at angles, illuminated with strip
lighting, finished with a wooden band running at the
base giving you an effect of a floating counter.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 126

The design of the banquet hall is finished with a sleek look incorporating wall panels with Indian
classical dance movements sticking to the rhythm of the concept. It can host 100 people at a time
with flexibility in furniture. A freestanding ‘jhulla’ (swing) is fixed from the top of the ceiling located at
the entrance induces the “Indian Modern” also acts as the backdrop for taking a selfie. The drop lights
in the Banquet Hall wrapped around the column made of wood highlighting the column. The crystal
chandeliers designed in a set of three gives an ambience of luxury. The hexagonal pattern screens
fabricated in metal are fixed behind the stage to give a semi-transparent backdrop for the user to allow
customization for any given occasion.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 127

FOAID Design Studio has pushed the
ideas of restaurant interiors to a more
experiential level. We take pride in
Jalpaan because it’s a place where the
user experience has been the prima
facia for our design concept.

The marble flooring, the retro furnishing, the fresco, the long winding staircase, the chandeliers, all

response of the patrons, the objective was achieved in an emphatic manner!

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 138

Qualia offers a playful dining experience in which guests are made to feel part of the entire practice of
cooking. A coherent array of spaces, following the restaurant’s linear form, is accentuated by the careful
insertion of delicate material details. By framing and highlighting the different back-of-house areas the
creation of dishes is turned into a theatrical event. Serie were invited to design the flagship 100-seat
restaurant at the end of 2017. The brief asked for good acoustics and lighting to support the dining
experience and the separation of bar and dining spaces to manage noise levels.

The long, linear volume is interrupted by three large columns in the centre of the space.
Hundred-foot long glass façade gives view to the street and gardens beyond. The design seeks to
place guest seating as close to the windows as possible and to take advantage of the sequence
of four bays as defined by the structural columns.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 139

Qualia is conceived as a stage for the art of cooking. The restaurant is designed to heighten the
sensual qualities of the dining experience, from the tastes and aromas of the food to the choreography
of cooking as the chefs create each dish.

The proscenium is made of shelves displaying the ingredients that make up each dish. Fronting
the kitchens is a long continuous table and counter, allowing diners to interact with the chefs and
their preparation.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 140

The kitchen is open to the main seating
area, allowing diners to witness all stages
of food preparation. Each section of the
kitchen is framed, like a proscenium in a
theatre, drawing the eye through a series
of preparatory layers. There are three such
sections: the main cooking area which
comprises of the hearth and pizza oven;
the dessert and baking area; and the bar.
The kitchen is configured as a linear
arrangement of four distinct activity zones.
The first bay stages the bar, the bakery
in the second, the live cooking stations
in the third and a sommelier’s table at
the fourth bay.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 141

Tracing the counter moves a semi-transparent bronze curtain, revealing and concealing the
theatre of the kitchen. The sweeps of the curtain define each bay, while unifying them visually as
a singular continuum. Stretching 16 feet in height from the timber ceiling to the floor, the curtain
is drawn up over the bar, open kitchen, and sommelier station, creating distinct proscenium-like
spaces.

The ceiling is designed as an array of timber frames within which rows of timber louvers absorb and
direct sound to a thick layer of sound insulation foam above. Black terrazzo is the primary floor and wall
finish, complementing the palette of timber surfaces and bronze chainmail.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 142

These frames turn onto the façade
over the open kitchen to create rows
of timber shelves that hold the bar
display and stacks of glass jars of
pickled vegetables and fruits.

To subvert the typical experience of a glass horizontal edge between the corridor and ‘ interior’
space we used the arcade as a means to structure a reference to the type of a colonnaded
walkway defining spaces of intimacy, pause and refuge from the cacophony of the busy
corridors just outside.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 146

This edge is designed as a wooden arcade,
assembled by stacking and rotating
horizontal wooden members around a pivot
point and hence through their form defining
the width of a booth while rising as high as
double height of the façade. The warmth and
intimate scale of the booth is offset by the
continuity of the service bar and open kitchen
right up to the alfresco dining space beyond.

Taking the Oriental as a design challenge through a new, innovative concept and unique space. The
project idea was comprehensible by the client of bringing the core of East Asian societies with different
cultures, styles, religions and shaping it into designs that can produce friendly space, proportion and
generate emotions among visitors.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 153

The interior intended to be calm and modernism without typical features of eastern countries but
at the same time generates an amuse for visitors to stop and explore Asian cuisine located in the
right place of Mumbai.

To achieve this aim, we offer an unusual spatial distribution, thought as continuous fragmentation of
the main space, whereas we enter a huge Teak wooden door with metal iconography which represents
the symbol of longevity and healthy life with traditional welcome seating’s where the vertical partition of
wooden circular patterns hung from the ceiling are opposed to those fastened to the original brick wall
partition. These circular wooden patterns are based on old Asian culture with different energies and
perspectives. The floor made in circular patterns surrounded by geometric patterns and the surface
keep the personalities of material and bring out their intrinsic properties.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 154

Space is enriched by particular decorative elements that originated from the interpretation of traditional
items. Classical traditional mask of male and female made of metal hung on the wall is painted in black
color which was typically used in musical drama placed on the textured walls to highlight, in tones of
gray have been mixed with natural brick wall partition.

Small showcase open Bar with backlight and raised counter platform finished with wooden texture tile to
give an authentic rustic aspect with classical decorative hanging light.

The impressions of the longevity symbols (circular wooden patterns partition) and representing
the artwork as a traditional button with different patterns carved out in MDF which act like a
welcoming partition which is a sign of various qualities of creating a good aura of love.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 155

The areas have been separated from different aspects which reflects different traditional cultures
as design outcomes. The neatly exposed ceiling with decorative hanging lights and Kota flooring
with geometric patterns aimed at providing the space with a spectacular comfort, convenience to
the ambiance and overall experience.

The composition of fluted glass patterns with teak wood frames on the left act as a partition to create
the essence of matter from a visual and tactile point of view. This contemporary, minimalistic approach
produces the impression of coherence while creating a powerful aesthetic impact.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 156

Apparently, simple handcrafted furniture is
a mix of Indian contemporary style created
with a slight oriental touch on fabric. A
combination of wood and black painted metal
piping tubes gives a sleek look to chairs. To
highlight the furniture, fabric denotes the
motifs and patterns of spring flowers and
blossoms instead of silk velvet has been used.
The composition of circular pattern intimates
spaces which turns out to be welcoming.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 157

The center walls with classical frames give essence to a mix of Asian and contemporary style on a
finely textured wall. The harmonious combination of decorative elements, which resembles traditional
and cosmopolitan components creates a sort of interplay between simplicity and minimalism.

During the design stage, we thought to use those materials that could be found in nature to
communicate the feelings of space and understand the culture and cooking traditions all in
one place!

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 163

Together is a feeling, Together is more than just a word, Together one can make the world more
interesting and evolve. The latest collaboration of Studio RENESA brings forward a collaborative
approach of space, team, scale, culinary and bar experience to connect to the true meaning of
"togetherness". In search of a meaningful integration of shape, color, texture, and design, the entire
space integrates the different planes and volumes of the site at the 12th floor of Le Meridien, Gurgaon.
The ideology of the space initiates from the amalgamation of a young talented chef (Vanshika Bhatia)
with an experienced bar mixologist (Nitin Tewari) to form three basic parts - kitchen, bar, and a
seating space.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 164

The Indigenous characterization of using locally sourced Indian Materials was one of the main
expressions at Together At12th. The overlay of Indian Teak wood in contrast with the Dholpur Stone
creates a juxtaposition of textures from the ceiling to the walls and floor, visually softening the project
as a minimalist and elegant fine dining restaurant. The wooden lattice creates a symphony of dramatic
formats of vertical and horizontal arrangements along with the minimal rose gold plated sleek lighting
design which has been conceptualized as per the branding module of the different spaces at the site.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 165

In addition to the subtle variation of Indian materiality, the same materials act like sound absorbents
for the hotel below and add to the aesthetic value of the space through its grain and organic structure.
Consequently, the entrance acts as a transitional space, designed to create a narrow passage from the
dining area and the speakeasy bar connecting to the private dining room and lounge. Throughout the
area, there is exposed concrete overlapped with wooden slats to create a sense of continuity and
harmony for the visitor.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 166

As we move further, the visitor comes
across the grandness of the room in which
the restaurant opens up as we move between
tables up to the open terrace space which is
flooded with natural light parallel to the
huge spread of the bar. The backbone of the
space, i.e. the kitchen was a huge challenge
due to the importance of its strategic location
and demand. To strike the right balance of
aesthetics and services, the kitchen massing
was moved to the end of the gallery space
along with the hotel service unit area to get
a bigger area as well as to accommodate the
inflow of guests expected at the restaurant.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 167

Similarly, the bar massing was racked up at the other end of the space to create a balance of energies
and ensure that the seating space fused itself into the speakeasy and the bar seating. The design of the
restaurant is in equilibrium with the culinary and bar scheme. The kitchen acts as the unifying element
bringing together the bar to form a pure space which may visually seem complex but follows an ease of
movement through the space. The result is an experience that encourages togetherness.

The client's brief was to have a restaurant space that is modern, and yet, reminds one of the comfort
of eating with their loved ones. A place where people would enjoy flavoursome food that brings back
memories of home-cooked delicacies.

We wanted to create a space which resonates with both, the name of the restaurant; “Saudade” (a
feeling of longing, or nostalgia), and the passion of our young client. We have tried to weave this
meaning into the space with the use of strong geometrical elements, varied materials, and the use of
bold colors.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 175

The logo needed to reflect the notion of “atithi devo bhava” where the customer is like a god and sat-
isfying him with delicious food is the priority. We abstracted this idea into a minimal logo of an archway
entrance and a plate.

The logo became a pivotal design element, which has been used with variations to create differ-
ent wall patterns, thus dominating the visual aesthetic of the place.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 176

The use of cane seats and
the rattan lamps is inspired
by the owner’s nostalgia
from moments in his backyard,
where he would spend hours
enjoying scrumptious food.
The potted plants bring in
an element of freshness.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 177

The earthy shade of plum envelopes the entire space, making a strong impact on the viewer. The black
and white, rose-pink and white cabana-stripes popping out of the arches bring in a young, playful vibe,
breaking the monotony of the plum-colored walls.

The cabana-striped pickle jars stacked next to the cash counter blend together the vintage and the
modern, reminding us of the delectable pickle recipes from our grandma’s kitchen.

We have tried to create a space
that enhances the dining experience
and keeps the customer coming
back for more.

Located in a posh market place at Madya Marg, Sector 7C, Chandigarh, this café offers more than just
what’s appealing to the taste buds. Getting franchised amidst the sophisticated living standards of the
city, the interiors break norms by going beyond the basic brown chocolate theme. It comes at rescue of
the poised culture the city has adopted while endorsing a modern European style- setting a benchmark
of its kind.

A see-through fabricated glass facade works in attracting the passerby to this homeric setup.
The spirited color scheme and materials truly set this place on fire. It gets visually segregated through
the circulation walkways and the three pre-existing circular columns while at the same time unified with
the parallelly running service ducts- all ablaze with a buoyant turquoise paint. Furthermore, the columns
come into the spotlight with its metal jalli and neon letterings that guide through various sections of
the eatery.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 183

The first section put up a central wood display- laden in wooden battens accompanied by the cuboidal
wall showcases to its right and a blue exposed brick art-installation to its left. The exposed ceiling and its
services play in articulating the arena. A traditionally tiled section and an industrialized rustic tiling pattern
diversify this space further.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 184

The assorted furnishings make up the soul with a greater design detailing to be the cherry on top.
The range of these furnishing extends to at least 5 types of variations of chair by their form. They are
creatively and craftily custom-made by a craftsman team in Ahmedabad. The designs span from bold
fabric sofa chairs, cup-saucer themed seating, a high surfboard themed seating to the blue-red wooden
antiquity chair. Even the fabrics are vigilantly chosen to range from plain to digitally printed. A swinging
bamboo seating was also introduced as per the pre-requisite from the client.

No stone has been left unturned while
curating this den with the ceiling dropping
varied hanging lights and the walls
exasperating wall textures and brick metal
installations. This vivacious ride of emotions
and feelings terminate with a main service

The central circular column acts as an epitome with its seating arrangement originating from
a circular form. Here, the false ceiling is lowered to be detailed in focal lights along with the
hanging greens for itself to act as an art installation. To its right is the exceptional concrete
stepping with an attribute to serve an individual as well as a group. This add-on was to bring in
a beguiling concept for the urbanity the city runs by. It adopts just the right amount of navigation
between a private and open nature of space- with the curving fabricated wire-mesh aiding the
purpose. The neon lettering was introduced here as well catering to the intended experience.

Imagine an Asian restaurant inside a construction site at any chapel. Imagine walking down the central
isle looking at an alter in the making as you appreciate the support of the metal columns and arches
alongside and above you. Imagine the stain glass on the sides streaming in the sunlight and imagine
hand-painted murals on walls.

Walk into Misu. Stop imagining.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 193

And see the contemporary and edgy interpretation of a restaurant inside a church with classical and
colonial western elements meeting fine and minimal Japanese shapes in a beautiful and mesmerizing
confluence of glamour and grunge. Indirect lighting softly illuminates the mesh arches and hand
painted walls to create an intimate atmosphere at night. The deconstructed, almost cubist portrait of a
girls face acts as the central point which the arches lead up to. During the day the abstract stain glass
at the back of the bar overpowers the area becoming the focal point for a fresh and hip ambiance.

Because of its intentional unfinished and work-in-progress sensibility, patrons feel the need to
come back to see the progress.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 194

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 196
And of course, the client maintained that
he would like a face of sorts to be present
as that worked in the first restaurant. The
rest of it was as blank as a canvas could
be. The space planning helped in realizing
that this space, like the first would be
divided by a central passage. There would
be a fairly large step up and this area
would have a lower ceiling.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 197

When we saw the site, an old building with arches, we knew at once we wanted to take some of the
structural remnants inside as well. Since this was the second Misu we were designing, we also wanted
it to have a bit of familiarity from the first one for brand recall. So we laid out some ground rules – we
would bring back all our deep colors of blue, green and mustard and crimson, and use copper in some
way as the first Misu too had in in abundance.

It stays to a trend that Asian restaurant often have an Asian face that is larger than life. But also it breaks
away by the way the face is done. It is abstract using lines and shapes. The setting itself breaks away
from the trend that Asian restaurant have to look typically “Asian” with elements like bamboo, greenery,
cane, and natural materials, Asian symbolism and typography. When you see an Asian restaurant,
usually you can spot it from a mile away. With this, we used Roman church elements like stain glass,
wall painting and a central isle to create a counter-intuitive feel for an Asian restaurant.

Wok This Way is a quick service cafe serving traditional Asian cuisines with innovative combinations of
locally sourced vegetables. The client brief given to us was simple, they wanted to create a cafe that
would have an oriental look and feel and would also have an overall strong sense of identity as a space
that will stand out in a neighborhood which is overly crowded with restaurants and cafes. Our idea was
to create a space that would go along with the kind of food Wok this Way offers- simple, clean, organic,
while also creating a bright and inviting cafe that adds a whimsical pop of orange to the block, as
orange is their brand colour.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 203

Since it was a tiny space of roughly 350 sq.ft. with a high ceiling, we wanted to create a more intimate
experience while bringing out the oriental element in a subtle way. The rear end of the space is used as
the kitchen area along with a common washroom tucked in a corner. The front space is the main dining
space which has a table chair set up on one side and a long high table with high chairs on the other.

A combination of pale wooden seating and table tops along with white walls and black ceiling,
set against an orange wall, can be seen to make the space look bigger and brighter. To add the
informality of a street like feel, we used grey terrazzo floor tiles throughout the space along with
lantern like lighting. To have maximum visibility, the entire cafe facade has clear glass panels
with a combination of orange powder coated aluminium sections and solid paneling at the top
and bottom.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 204

We worked closely with the client to come up with all of the
restaurant’s graphic applications, adapting the existing identity
with new iconography for signage, menus, partition wall art to
shop front etched graphics with all pattern work inspired by and
adapted from traditional Asian print designs. We wanted to avoid
clichéd references to Chinese culture in India, and thus refrained
from using obvious traditional patterns or symbols anywhere in
the space. Instead we used contemporary elements to redefine
the Asian design, like the use of cane as back rests and within the
kitchen wall partition and wall art using different patterns and
line graphics.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 205

Traditional woven cane is used in the space through a series of arches for the kitchen partition and high
back rest for the seating. Laser cut metal artwork is fixed on top of the cane backrest, which is inspired
by oriental food Wok this Way offers. Along with cane, inspiration was also drawn from the traditional
Asian window design with mullion grids for the backrest. Wall art with a contemporary take on the Ori-
ental patterns and graphics is installed on one of the walls along with planters suspended from dimsum
boxes. On the opposite wall, four wooden shelves are placed to display artifacts and more greens.
These are supported by circular orange metal rings of different sizes.

Thus the material palette used in the space consists of neutral colours of ash wood laminate,
grey terazzo floor, white walls with hints of orange throughout. Overall the design is kept simple
by using geometrical shapes, clean graphics and arches set against a vibrant orange backdrop
and lots of plants throughout the space.

The intent behind creating Playground was to break the conventionality of brutalist architecture of
Chandigarh. The inside/outside concept was quashed and the restaurant has been treated as a single
envelope that flows from one end to another. The expansive single surface has been broken into
multiple levels and sections with their own vibe and spatial characteristics. This helps realize the client's
vision of 'restaurants within a restaurant' where each section would be treated differently but would be
a piece of the overall puzzle.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 210

The bar and 'pizzeria' section that contains a wood-fired pizza oven and a dedicated pizza counter
space has a very earthy and comfortable vibe to it. The 'Playground VIP' section is a plush setup with
a very chic outlook. Set around a textured wall comprising of audio cassettes, it is a common hangout
spot for some very important people of the world. The 'stage' section, which is the highest layer of the
envelope is inspired by a tree house and is an interesting take on it.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 211

The restaurant is submerged in a thick cover
of 'greens' that have been carefully ingrained
as a part of the design. Be it the flooring with
grass strips, the concrete blocks as planters, the
trenches that cover the entire length of the space
or the tropical-themed wallpapers, the space is
carefully curated with a green and vibrant theme.
The inside area has a casual yet quirky vibe with
music themed wall finishes, a retro bar and a
deck that levitates towards the outside.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 212

The restaurant has two entrances that have been designed as the major focal points in terms of design.
The front entrance is 50 feet long, 3 feet wide tunnel like passage that is filled up with liquor bottles in
front of mirrored shelves and roof. The tunnel kaleidoscope transcends into the infinite and creates an
illuminating effect inside the space. The back entrance and the corresponding facade are a contrast to
the entire restaurant theme and showcases a run-down street look with a 90's era Indian music shop.
This contrasting curtain creates an element of surprise for the people and enhances their experience
once they enter the space.

This project was conceived using affordable materials and parts of an existing building to keep project
costs down. We wanted to create a cozy environment for this family-owned business. To achieve this,
we chose to use simple, muted materials such as wood and concrete, and added plenty of vegetation.

The garden restaurant comprises of an open-plan dining area with a garden extension featuring
raw materials and an assortment of plants. It accommodates indoor and outdoor dining for lunch and
dinner. Tables and chairs are arranged around a small court filled with plants, which is positioned next
to a staircase.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 218

The stairs ascend to upper floor providing additional seating that overlooks the court. The upper floor
of the cafe provides a view of the sky and is partly covered by mushroom like umbrella structures to
protect from direct sunlight. On this level, guests can also choose to sit outside on a covered terrace
lined with bamboo-filled planters or the indoor dining area.

Most of the furniture is custom design and handmade at site by local carpenters except the
chairs. The building is separated from the pavement outside by a low concrete wall.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 219

Inside, the walls are covered in custom
made aluminumpaneling to add texture
with material palette of grey paint, wood and
patterned tiles creates a neutral backdrop
for thevariety of greenery. To compensate
for the lack of naturallight towards the back
of the space, we also added a grid of
LED lights across the ceiling.

Designed with the nostalgia and exuberance of glistening past memories, Flashblack
explicitly instills fond snippets of years gone by, emphasizing that ‘there is something for
everyone.’ Spread over an area of 15,000 sq. ft , this multi-level lounge and bar, is a harmonized
mix-bag of facets that render the interiors with an etching of indelible ink. While every individual
has sought the silver lining in enveloping clouds, the design approach clearly presents colorful
streaks in a grey toned theme, metaphorizing the name of the project through artistic intricacies.

The brief from the client was simple and primarily required the curation of a space relatable to a wide
range of users from different walks of life. With the concept of concocting a quirky environment with
bold interiors, each portion of the ambience tends to grasp the attention of the visitor. The design
scheme thus is aimed at presenting people with a ‘non-intimidating’ environment that portrays its
inclusive ambiance through a warm colour palette and engaging graffiti.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 226

The Flashblack lounge and bar, quaintly distributes its spaces from the second floor to the terrace
floor levels. With each floor possessing a distinct design perception, the common vibe of an intimate
entertainment set-up is seamless. With a façade accomplished in pine wood, the structure announces
the vibe of its interiors, from the inception itself.

Upon entering the second floor, one is welcomed by a double heighted space which imparts an
essence of magnanimity to the entrance. The artistic bar zones are differentiated from the relaxed
lounge areas by its vibrant epoxy floor finish. With a back-lit display, the bar serves users with a tangy
cocktail of experiences. A human graffiti, sketched on the wall gives the space an off-beat semblance;
while the usage of wood and ambient lighting sprinkles the area with the requisite warmth. Usage of
mild steel frames and black tandoor flooring for the double height pockets, supplement the bar with a
redefined sense of modernism.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 227

The other portion of this floor is divided into
mellow lounges with dimmed yellow lighting
to amplify the customer’s comfortable experience.
Mirroring the grey tiled flooring in the soft
furnishings, these spaces utilize profuse amounts
of wood, evidently displayed as a part of the
aesthetic pine wood frames and
the instilled decor.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 228

The décor of the mezzanine floor is in complete compliance with that of the second floor, with
a bar in vibrant epoxy flooring and aesthetic mild steel structuring. However, the decorative
pendant pattern of the ceiling, is what completes the charming layout. Serving the functional
aspects of acoustic treatment, DGU glazing has been installed which also aids in creating the
visceral ambiance.

Arriving at the next level a further varied combination of seating milieus and configurations are
presented to the user. With the schema laying out one indoor and two outdoor seating areas, the design
composition offers a slight variation in flavor. The quaintly beaming bar houses a combination of deck
wood flooring and vintage light fittings. Encompassing illuminated neon art on the walls, the outdoor
seating arenas are bound by mild steel frames with over 300 exquisite bulbs hanging from them to
create a showering ‘host of golden lights.’

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 229

The culminating level consists of two semi-open seating options and a luxurious private lounge.
Decorated with three-dimensional art in bright hues of blue and yellow, the ceiling has cone
lightings illuminating the aura of this serene set-up.

The design of the Flashback lounge, is a sheer corollary of plethoric compositional styles ranging from
being up-beat & naïve to posing for sophisticated opulence.

Further on, as the design meanders into the mezzanine and terrace floors, one stumbles upon the
accentuated colorful mosaic pattern placed across the walls as you journey upwards. Added to break
the monotony of the dark themed décor, it portrays an essence of illusion when an individual moves
between levels. The feeling of vitality has been subtly expressed through the inculcation of wooden
massing and green wall installations, adding a more defined character to the connecting corridors.

Use of natural elements such as the engraved stone that was brought up from the regions of RAJULA,
a city situated in Gujarat with an odd random size of 8" x 12" and were installed randomly to give the
restaurant a natural and authentic feel. Also the other Antique Grey stone that was installed in a break

The facade has been treated with OAK wood and textured glass which are installed in the slits created
in the facade.Fabricated partitions were made to define different areas and seating
arrangements, also the use of aqua blue color leather with oak wood furniture adds a subtle modern
look to the restaurant.

Previously a space occupied by a corporate bank was leased out for this fantastic café, the space was
a typical commercial setup, but this time with a STRONG ROOM made in 1’ thick concrete which was
later converted to kitchen for the café.

This café is a journey of intricate restoration and rebuilding process, every brick, every stone
carefully crafted and positioned, exposed concrete beams, restored railings and windows from
jodhpur, DC comics, exposed brick work, stone arches, central MS staircase everything
resonating to create this beautiful café, it has been possible only because of amazing design
collaboration between our client Mr.Varun sharma and our Chief Ar.Praveen Kumar.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 247

This café is the extension to already popular “the coffee cup” in Hyderabad, so challenge was to
maintain the vibe of the place and lift the brand value and quality of the space, a very straight forward
brief from client was to be true to the every single material used in the café, restoration and reuse has
been the prime aspect of design.

Café has been composed on two levels with various flexible seating options for both closed and semi
open seating, openings are strategically placed to flood the space with natural light and vegetation
planned on every opening to reduce the heat and noise from abutting road and to create privacy at
both the levels.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 248

MS STAIRCASE with hardwood tread is located in the heart of café by cutting the slab and
connecting both the levels internally, and the stair well is crowned with custom made chandelier
which is a 100 odd year old fisherman boat procured all the way from Kerala, hanged inverted
from the slab and filaments hanged in it to create a perfect piece of surprise and attraction for
the customers.

From the very entrance of the café to any corner it’s a roller-coaster experience of various materials in
their purest forms, and elements of surprise scattered through out the space to keep every single user
engaged and intrigued, rustic yet cozy vibe is achieved in a very unconventional format.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 249

The windows and the railings are all procured from jodhpur, restored and
installed on site, exposed brick walls with stone arches add the rustic flavor
to space keeping it super true to the material pallet, DC comics printed on
metal plates have been splashed on the walls keep the users engaged (and
of course our client is a big DC fan), also we had to cater to, ceiling have
been done in simple white hand plaster finish to balance the dark floor and
exposed brick work, handmade paper lamps with filaments bulbs are used to
add warm light to the space making it super cozy.

Rock Cream, dubbed as ‘theSWIRL’ is the interior design of a dessert studio in Trichy. The young
client requested an innovative and contemporary design that is cost-effective. The site is in one of the
upcoming busy areas of the urban sprawl. Since the site is positioned in the first floor of the building,
our intent was to grab the attention of the busy pedestrian and vehicular traffic attention through our
design features. We wanted to make use of the 40’ seamless glass façade on the exterior as a visual
canvas for our design element to the onlookers.

The design was inspired from the product itself i.e.: the swirl on the soft ice cream from the
machine. We designed this as a central focal element on the ceiling thereby tying the spaces
together in the interior and creating the desired attention seeking element that can be noticed
from the road. ‘theSWIRL’ was made with fabric. To replicate the cool colours of ice creams, a
pastel colour palette comprising of peach, blue and green is used for the dessert studio. The
furniture was designed to be light weight and modular under the same palette. The place
doubled up as a mini party hall for birthdays and other small events.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 258

The walls were treated as a plain white
canvas upon which the fabric that is
running on the ceiling is continued. It was
painted as ribbons of the same shades which
ensures a seamless connectivity between the
ceiling and wall. The lighting is designed to
have minimum interference with the fabric
element hence surface LED lights have
been used to uniformly lit up the space
during the evenings.

Restaurant Interior sets the stage for a customer’s dining experience.
While restaurants, cafes and every other establishment in the F&B industry compete with each other
using location, prices, and promotions, very little take the win from the margin of their interior design.
The design follows the ideology of how restaurant interior design impacts customer psychology,
prompts them to order more or less, and even impacts the duration of their stay in the restaurant.
Seating options, light, music, and architecture, all constitute a restaurant’s interior design.

Located at Ahmedabad, Umami Restaurant was designed to give the user a mixed feel of a retro
Industrial look. The clients approached the Architects with an objective to design this restaurant
as an all day diner.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 263

The design consists of Arched glass walls, framing the views to the outside while the customers enjoy
their meal. The dining area consists of wooden tables and cushioned chairs finished in Blue and Green
colour in contrast to the dark colour palette around. The flooring beneath the main dining has been
kept slightly dark with black stone for flooring. Introduction of stripped tiles break the monotony of black
flooring and introduces an element of playfulness.

Natural tones of wood teak finish in the furniture allude to the luxurious ambience which is
further accentuated by Arched walls.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 264

The furniture units are arranged by size, scale and proportion and rhythm is employed byrepeating
furniture. Unity is achieved by harmonizing furniture with other spatial features like colour palette used-
throughout in design. Emphasis is created by grouping furniture to have focal points. Balance becomes
the primary consideration in arranging furniture as it affects the sense of equilibrium / stability in a
space. Tables have a teak veneer finish while the chairs have a seamless fabric in blue and green co-
lour in contrast to the dark colour palette around.

The ceiling is exposed in grey, following the overall dark palette in the design. Ambient lighting
has been used in the design to define the overall look and feel of the restaurant. With the use of
dim lighting, a relaxing mood and aura is created. The lighting fixtures are hung through books
from the ceiling.

RESTAURANT, BAR & CAFE Interiors 265

Introduction of patterned tiles break the monotony of black flooring and introduces an element
of playfulness. The combination of dark and light tiles complement each other. The central space
is finished in gloss tile, with geometric pattern flooring on it’s periphery. All around the room,
kadappa stone flooring has been used. The combination of different flooring styles and patterns
alongwith the Restaurant’s interior sets the stage for a customer’s dining experience.

Rusted iron sheets have been used as screening which consists of perforations. An artwork is formed
on the wall using a combination of books where each book forms an arc painted on it’s page to form a
complete circle while the other books have various drawings on the pages.

The artwork presented on books through
various monoglyphs and sketches depicting
a sandclock, flowers and birds among other
art invokes curiousity as it meets the eye
initiating a thought process and a trail of
memories through time of fond moments or
simply a reminder to take a break from the
daily activites and rejuvenate while having
a fine dining experience.

The door shutters to the banquet have been designed as a bookshelf to create an interesting element.
Painted green shutters with tinted glass, wall murals and paintings and funky light elements and door
design make the entire space vibrant and playful. The same element continues in the design of the
furniture as well.

For developing lighting design, inspiration was taken from books. Books have been infused with light
fixtures and hung from ceiling, creating an interesting element. Another light fixture used in the design
is pendant light. A panelling screen has been designed in corten screen with perforations.

Interior design ends up expressing
itself in successive outer layers that
defies labeling - a synthesis of visual
and physical comfort.

Permutation and combinations of flipping a single tile over different axis let to creation of one final
module, a continous loop made to look like a maze. The stripes on tiles are flipped along vertical axis,
making it identical but at the horizontal axis, a single tile is flipped over to form a pattern through
creation of long continous loops.

Tea villa cafe has been India’s finest brand for the exclusive selection of their Teas. Twoplustwo was
commissioned to design their first franchise outlet in Ahmedabad. The brief was simple, it has to be
different, and it has to meet the expectation of all age groups, thereby defining the design of this urban
cafe. The site was completely pervious due to the presence of all glass facade on 2 sides, and this is
where we decided to make a forest, a forest of lights to create zones for different age groups. Lights
have been a primary element of design in cafe(s) and restaurant since they help us in creating the
moods, and here we were looking for a versatile appeal.

There is a central fine-dining area with a polished Terrazo floor and custom made circular
lighting, a high seating area for our young visitors (although this space has been the most used
by the 50-65 age bracket, due to its comfort), a group dining area with couch and finally the
corner sitting area for people who prefer privacy. The central lighting disc(s) are PU coated HDF
panels, embedded with circular lighting and it has been designed to be visible directly from the
main street, and this becomes the memory hook for this outlet.

At the entrance you are greeted with a
Tea-Cart to bring back the memories of Indian
local Chai Spots. Further you can look through
to witness the clean and neat ash cladded
main counter, with a Kesariya marble top.
There is a neat Tea Villa Cafe insignia, which
helps us in adding more to the brand identity.

The walls have been cladded with the indigenous icons, like the perforated plates with Siddhi Saiyed
Jaali, Sabarmati Ashram, Chabutara, etc. and a metal mural with Amdavadi old city heritage. There is
also a “word cloud” composed with the highly rated menu items, like the Belgian waffles, Dutch
pancakes, etc. The complete cafe was designed with natural and raw materials, be it the polished
terrazzo and marble floors, or the cast stone lighting.

The central dining tables have the stories
inscribed for their famous teas. These stories are the
ones which bring wings to the client interests while
ordering from the beverages menu. And thereby
raising the bar of customer experience.

And we have tried to achieve the best out of them by using patterns, for spatial character. This is
exemplified by the Kesariya Green Marble + Banswara White marble flooring in the cafe. We took
light ash-wood colour for the dividers and main units to keep those silent. While the complete
wooden furnitures are in milder tones, polished on the same wood texture.
