- INSTRUCTION MANUAL - SONY CONDENSER MICROPHONE MODEL C-37A SONY CORPORATION TOKYO JAPAN The 3rd eddition February, 1964 38.2. $.0co SONY CORP. 8 (SER_MTCROI 7A Le r ‘The SONY CONDENSER MICROPHONE MODEL C-37A is @ high fidelity, varlable directional (unt/omnt-directional) microphone developed by SONY accoustic engineering staff. The excellent performance of the C-37A got great reputation in the entire field. of accoustic concern vhen it was introduced, and it * has been used in vorld-vide broadcasting stations, film studios, recording facilicies, etc., where superior characteristics and relf- ability fe required, owing to ite erable function, excellent perf- ormance, simple operation and rigid construction. . 2. Description 2:1. The upper part of the microphone is a C-3 capsule pounted ‘in the metal netting, and the lower parc, inside of the metal case, {8 8 cethode-follover circuit incl- uding an electron cube 6AU6. The entire internal secenbly te rigidly shielded against an external static field. The diephragn of the microphone cepsule is ¢ very thin plectic film sputtered with oure gold. Since this diaphragm ts mounted on the capsule so that it may get full damping effect acoustically, the condenser microphone model C-37A shows very excellent high frequency performance 2.2, The microphone unit ts connected to the FOWER SUPPLY MODEL CP-32 through the MICROPHONE CABLE TYPE EC-10B. The oucpuc signal from che C-37A is delivered from the connec tor ‘located on the front panel of the CP-3B. 2.3. The new power supply unic model CP-3B 1s an improved version of the wodel CP-3 formerly used, providing more relisble comp- onents and printed circuit construction for higher and uniform performance. . 2.4. Connectors for input and output, selectors for frequency resp- onse are’ provided on the front panel of the CP-3B, and there ‘leo provided another selectors for output impedance, level and aupply voltage are provided on the buttom and (naide of the unic for versatile operacion. 28.2. 5.960 SONY CORP. 3. The microphone model C-37A {6 used together with the pover supply model CP-3B which 1s connected to the C-37A through the microphone cable. The length of the microphone cable type EC-10B supplied is 10 weter, however, the distance betveen these ‘two unics may be prolonged up to 60 meter without giving any effect-to the performance. 6.2. The outpug signal froa the eicrophone is delivered from the 3P connector on the front panel of the CP-3B. The frequency response, output level and impedance are avail- able at several values by the following procedures. (1) Frequency response. By turning the 4-position switch located on the front panel, low frequency response is varied. The switch position M corresponds to the flat response, and vhen che switch turned to Hl, Vl end V2, the degree of low frequency attenuation is increased respectively. By depressing the push-button on the front penel, attenuat- fon in high frequency is achieved. The pilot lamp just above the push-button is illumineted when che button is depressed. As to the characteristic of the attenuation, please refer to the fig. 8. (2) The suiech for the ouput impedance/level selection t# prov- ided on the button of the CP-33. By turning the screw on the buttom ich a ecreudriver, the output impedance/level is varried, and the value selected {a indicated through the rectangular opening The figure 50 corcesponds the output {mpedance of 50 ohms, and 250 to 250 ohms. The letcer "ATT" Just behind each figure shovs thet the output level te 6 db below the normal value. 6.3. The pover oupply te tnicially set ot the factory for the Line voltage a¢ specified in the name plate on the back panel. By changing the tapping of the power Cransformer inside the housing At aay be set for either 100, 117 or 220 voltage line. (1) Remove the housing by loosing two screws on esch side of the -4- 6.4. 6.6. SONY CORP. housing to get in access of the pover transformer. (2) Change che capping of che primary side of the transforser. (3) Whenever thie capping change is made, make certain to change the voltage indication in the name plate to the correct figure. It may be noticed that there exist some noise when the switch {s on after long time of unused period of in rainy season, but this noise will be disappeared after several minutes of operat! fon, and the set will show perfect performance. Do not turn on the power without connecting the microphone to the power supply, or do not disconnect the microphone while the power is on Several length of mlcrophone cable is provided co prolong the distance between microphone and the power supply, as follows. BC-10B - 10 meter BC-208 20 meter EC-30B - "30 meter Two kind of directivity, omni- and uni-directional , are available with the C-37A. To change the directivity from uni- to omni-, or vice versa, turn the small screw provided on the back of the metal netting pext of the microphone with a screvdriver to the left or right. 67 ——_+ h 44s—_y 62 Directivity Switch (Dimension tn m{Lllnecer) i i ter) (Dimenatone in mi time Symbol |Description Model or Type Co__|C-3 capsule T Electron tube 6AU6 R1___|carbon resistor NRD=1/2L, 100M ohms R2 " " NRD-1/2L, 1X ohms R3 a " WRD-1/2L, 100K ohme CNP.
