Personalized medicine in functional
gastrointestinal disorders:
Understanding pathogenesis to increase
diagnostic and treatment efficacy
Wang, X. J., & Camilleri, M. (2019).
Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are a type of
gastrointestinal (GI) condition that is characterized by chronic or
recurring GI symptoms but no biochemical or structural abnormalities.

While these conditions do not generally lead to death, they do cause

significant morbidity and frequently necessitate exhaustive, almost
always repetitive, diagnostic work-ups, increasing significant cost as
well as distress for both patient and provider.

I. SUMMARY
With improved diagnostic tools and a better
understanding of the specific pathophysiologic
mechanisms that underlie these conditions,
it is possible to distinguish specific mechanisms among patients
allowing for tailored therapy with a higher chance of success.
II. REACTION

It is important to perform an extensive analysis on gastrointestinal

disorders in order to provide optimal care to each patient.
This shift in approach will improve patient compliance, lower costs for
repetitive diagnostic workup in the future, potentially reduce patient and
provider frustration, and can possibly prevent the recurrence of the
disease and/or the development to more complications.
