1. Introduction

The [Physics Department of Lockheed Institute of Technology] has [six laboratories,] three
of which are available for student use, for both undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral
research purposes. A [2022] report showed that one of the labs, [Lab A-4] or the Quantum
and Molecular Studies Laboratory, uses up [37%] of the total power consumption of the
entire Physics Department. In response, the department revised the protocol for requesting
authorization for lab use to ensure that only priority projects are allowed.

In an effort to increase the efficiency of its facilities, the department assigned a team to
conduct research on the power consumption of [Lab A-4.] The research aims to determine
whether the new protocols made significant impact reducing the lab’s power consumption,
identify what contributes to the lab’s huge consumption, and streamline new policies for
power distribution. With the data from the research, the department is looking to reduce
the lab’s power consumption by [10%] at the end of the year.

This report contains the data gathered from the recent developments in the research as well
as the latest findings of the team.

2. Methodology

The team used a quantitative research model, specifically the monitoring of power
consumption of the lab over a period of time. The table below shows the lab’s power
consumption in the first three years after the implementation of new protocols in
authorizing lab usage.

Year Total Power Consumption % in the total Power

Consumption of the Physics
Department

2022 8,402 kWh 37.5%

2023 8,322 kWh 35.2%

2024 8,399 kWh 35.6%

Based on the data above, the protocol change yielded no significant improvement to the
power consumption of [Lab A-4] as the total consumption rate remained relatively
unchanged in the past three years. To remedy this, the research team focused on two major
aspects: equipment and power source.
The first phase of the study focused on the comparison between the power consumption of
Lab A-4 as is with the power consumption after performing standard diagnostic tests on
major equipment in the laboratory and streamlining protocols on allowing its usage. The
team monitored the lab’s power consumption without changing the equipment and power
source from [September 8 to 12, 2025] to serve as the basis of the comparison for the entire
study. The team them recalibrated lab equipment by shutting down unnecessary
background programs and redundant failsafe in the equipment’s systems. They then
monitored the power consumption with the recalibrated equipment from [September 15 to
19, 2025.]

For the second phase, the team installed [two BL02] generators in the lab to serve as an
alternative power source. The team then recorded the lab’s power consumption from
[September 22 to 26, 2025.]

3. Findings & Discussion

The results of the study indicated a significant difference in the lab’s power consumption
after the recalibration of the equipment and the installation of alternative power sources to
offset the power drain of the facility.

Power Consumption without Power Consumption after

Equipment Recalibration Equipment Recalibration

Equipment 1 45.34 kWh 29.03 kWh

Equipment 2 56.54 kWh 38.2 kWh

Lab A-4 141.24 kWh 106.59 kWh

The table above shows that the equipment recalibration yielded a [35-kWh] decrease in the
overall power consumption of the laboratory. Using this as average data, the lab can save up
to [1,800 kW] of power for an entire year.

Power Consumption without Power Consumption with

BL02 generators BL02 generators

Lab A-4 106.59 kWh 76.09 kWh

After installing alternative power sources, the results presented in the table above show a
decrease of [30.5 kWh] in the total power consumption for the entire monitoring period.

4. Conclusion

Based on the data collected, as presented in the tables above, the team concluded that

4.1. Without regular recalibration, major laboratory equipment causes significant power
drain;

4.2. Alternative power sources, in this case, the [bl02] generators, notably reduce power
consumption; and

4.3. The recalibration of major equipment and the installation of alternative power
sources can reduce the lab’s overall power consumption by at least [19%.]

5. Recommendations

In that regard, the team recommends conducting a separate study on other [laboratories] to
confirm the results of this research. Should such separate studies further prove the results
of this study, it is recommended that the university immediately draft plans for the
implementation of regular equipment calibration and installation of alternative power
sources. The team also recommends further revising the policies governing the usage of the
[university’s laboratories and other facilities.]
