CHAPTER: MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FLUIDS
WORKSHEET
TOPIC: PRESSURE DUE TO A LIQUID COLUMN

1. Explain the following:

(a) Blood pressure in human being greater at the feet than at the brain. Explain, why?
(b) Why are the bags and suitcases provided with broad handles?
(c) It is painful to walk barefooted on the ground covered with edge peebles. Why?
(d) We can cut an apple easily with a sharp knife as compared to with a blunt knife. Why?
2. Find the pressure exerted at the tip of a drawing pin if it is pushed against a board with a
force of 20 N. Assume the area of the tip to be 0.1 mm2.
3. The two thigh bones (femurs), each of cross-sectional area 10 cm2 support upper part of
human body of mass 40 kg. Estimate the average pressure sustained by the femurs. Take
g = 10 m s-2.
4. A 50 kg girl wearing high shoes balances on a single heel. The heel is circular of
diameter 1.0 cm. What is the pressure exerted by the heel on the horizontal floor?
5. How much pressure will a man of weight 80 kgf exert on the ground when (i) he is lying
and (ii) he is standing on his feet? Given that the area of the body of man is 0.6 m2 and
that of a foot is 80 cm2.
