Assessment
Find a poem or a story or a book that you think best represents the idea of The
Sublime. In a three-paragraph essay, explain why you think that book or poem or
story is sublime. Use the first paragraph to introduce your chosen literary text and its
summary. The second paragraph should feature your reasons why the text is
sublime, cite parts of the texts that can support your point. The third paragraph
should contain your closing statement on what is sublimity and your reflection on the
concept and your chosen text. Each paragraph should contain at least five
sentences.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost is an ambiguous poem that invites the reader
to consider life decisions such as whether to follow the crowd or go it alone. If life is a
journey, this poem shows the points at which a decision must be taken. Which path
will you take? The poem is about what did not happen: when challenged with an
important conscious decision, this person chose the road less traveled by, the most
difficult way. He was destined to go down one and lamented the fact that he couldn't
take both, so he sacrificed one for the other.

My 'why’ for taking this piece as sublime is its containment of the principal sources of
the sublime. The choice of proper words and the use of climax produce sublimity,
like "I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." for
example. Throughout the poem, the harmonious arrangement of ideas and the
grandeur of thoughts were like a chef’s kiss. It complemented the tone of delivery;
the passing of the author’s emotions to the readers is one of a kind. While reading,
you can really hear the voice of the speaker and feel as if you are recalling your
personal experiences related to the thesis statement.

As a result, the poem is truly sublime, and the strong reason for this is the use of
metaphor. In the poem, the road is the metaphor for life and the journey we walk
through it. The fork in the road represents the decisions we must make as we travel
down our path. The traveler must go one way or the other. This poem is very generic
in idea, for every one of us has also experienced the dilemma that the speaker
faces. Sometimes we made the wrong turns, but we somehow went back to the main
course, and that’s a good thing.
