Multiculturalism refers to the cohabitation of

different ethnic, racial, religious and language
groups. In any culture, there are
always differences in social backgrounds,
religious affiliations, ethnicities, and
socioeconomic factors. These differences are
what make a culture unique.
MULTICULTURISM COVERS A WIDE
RANGE OF TOPICS SUCH AS RACE,
RELIGION, ETHNICITY, CULTURE,
SEXUAL ORIENTATION, AND
DISABILITY.
Whilst expressing ones culture they
are also learning the main dominant
language of the country in addition to
abiding by the rules and regulations
of the country.
WE ARE UNIQUE IN
OUR OWN WAYS, AND
THAT'S BEAUTIFUL!

CRITICISM IS THAT THE CASE,
UMM?!
One of the most notable problems is the
AGAINST consequence of the “melting pot effect” –
where people from different cultures are
THE randomly intermingled without any regard to
their cultural needs or preferences. This can
lead to resentment among minority groups,
THEORY identity crises, and social unrest.
Another big problem is the “divide-and-conquer”
phenomenon, which means that people are split
according to their ethnic background without regard
for equality among all races. This divides people
into individual groups of common race rather than
forming a united society that can work together to
solve a problem

IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY

We tend to be more tolerant of people who share our culture. We look for
similarities and other commonalities. In other words, it is easier to interact
with someone like ourselves – or individuals who share our ethnic values and
background. Though this is wrong, we are less likely to see the difference in
another person if they also come from our culture, and this has an impact on
how we view them. The less we know about a person, the more we rely on
our own culture to understand them. This tendency is called the in-group
bias and it influences how we see other people in many ways. It can lead to
people having inordinate expectations of how someone will behave, and it can
also lead to cases of prejudice and discrimination.

It can be concluded that multiculturism has a way more positive

effect on society compared to negative sides. Proponents of cultural
diversity argue that it makes humanity stronger and may, in fact, be
vital to its long-term survival. In 2001, the General Conference of
UNESCO took this position when it asserted in its Universal
Declaration on Cultural Diversity that “...cultural diversity is as
necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature.”

As an active member of society, this project

has assisted me in apprehending sociological
theories from a diverse perspective at once.
It has driven my mindset more flexible
toward the surroundings and helped me
understand that no opinion can be judged as
incorrect one can only clearly capture the
idea of issues like multiculturism with an
open frame of mind.
REFLECTIONSHEET

Multiculturism is a broad topic

covering some significant matters
witnessed nowadays. Close scrutiny
of these topics has allowed me to
participate in locating the root
causes of such matters in question
and choose whether to be a critic or
a supporter of suchlike theory thus
enhancing my skills of decision-
making, observation, critical
thinking, and research ethics.

In a nutshell, I very much

enjoyed working on this
theme. It was a great
opportunity to look down
and explore new subject
areas. I look forward to
such thought-provoking
project.
