■ Particle で
1) Location : The particleで is used after “a place” to tell where a given action or event takes place.
• にほんで このしゃしんを とりました。 I took this photo in Japan.
• あのきっさてんで コーヒーを のみましょう。 Let’s have coffee at that coffee shop.

2) Tool, method (with, by, in ...) : The particleで also can be used to indicate tool or method.
• にほんじんは はしで ごはんを たべます。 Japanese people eat rice with chopsticks.
• にほんごで てがみを かきました。 I wrote a letter in Japanese.
• バスで フランスに いきました。 We went to France by bus.
• まいにち でんしゃで だいがくに いきます。 I go to university by train every day.

3) Reason, cause (due to, because of ...) : The particleで indicates the reason or the cause.
• たなかさんは よく しごとで スペインに きます。 Mr.Tanaka often comes to Spain for (due to) his work.
• いもうとは しけんで おそく かえります。 My yonger sister will come back late because of the exam.

■ ようび : Days of the week

When talking about days of the week, you can omit the particle に that indicates time.

• げつようび(に) だいがくに いきます。 TEST LEARN

　I will go to university on Monday.

• かようび にほんごを べんきょうしています。 かようび Tuesday
　I study Japanese on Tuesdays.
すいようび Wednesday

Depending on the size, type of the item, etc, Japanese uses a specific counter. There are counters for

Demonstrative pronouns for locations TEST LEARN
here there (near you) over there
ここ そこ あそこ

ここは とうきょう えき　ですか？ Is this (place) Tokyo Station ?

あなたの 本は そこ です。 Your book is there.
あそこに レストランが あります。 There is a restaurant over there.

■ 〜あります　〜います : be, exist, have

あります expresses the existence of inanimate objects. For animate objects, います is used.
(A) There is / are ... ...が　あります / います
It marks the item with the particle が.

たくさん 本が あります。 There are many books.

あそこに いぬが います。 There is a dog over there.

(B) Something / Someone is in ... Something / Someone は ...に あります / います

It marks the item with the topic particle は. In this pattern, the location particle に is used for indicating
the place.

銀行は ゆうびんきょくの前に あります。 The bank is in front of the post office.

あなたの 友達は あそこに います。 Your friends are over there.
